We report results of PON protection switching tests based on analytical models and hardware implementation. We compare re-activation times of GPON and X-GPON. We also propose protocol extensions and improvements for 10Gb/s symmetric Long-Reach PON.

The wavelength tunable filter will play a key role in realizing C/D/C add/drop functions in ROADMs. We fabricate a novel tunable filter for 192 optical channels on a PLC chip. Transmission experiments verify its optical characteristics.
