We developed a 1.7 pm band external cavity laser (ECL) that can supply an output power of over 0 dBm in the 1650 to 1740 nm wavelength region, and applied it to a near infrared spectroscopy system to evaluate the ethanol concentration of several commercially available distilled spirits. The evaluation of the distilled spirits was successful because the measured concentrations were less than the labeled ethanol concentrations on the bottles.

A long-fiber-based ring resonator for repetition rate multiplication of a fiber-based optical frequency comb has been demonstrated. Mode filtering of a 48.73 MHz repetition rate fiber-based comb generates a 243.65 MHz frequency comb with a multiplication factor of 5.

For the first time, we demonstrated transparent 1.16Gbit/s commercial LEDs based visible light transmission from free space to special designed ULEAPS fiber using an Ag/AgI coated hollow waveguide for visible light beam shaping. VLC is no longer restrained by line of sight which can help solve continuous growth of data rate demand over the next decades.

Defective regions of LED epi-wafers and chip-wafers could be observed by a photoluminescence (PL) imaging method. As the defective regions contain high density nonradiative recombination centers, the LED chips with defective regions showed different optical properties from those of LEDs with no defective regions found by PL imaging. At low optical excitation power levels, the PL properties were influenced by nonradiative recombination dominantly. Similar phenomena were observed from electroluminescence (EL) properties at low electrical excitation levels. Research results on the similarity and difference between PL and EL properties of LED chips are presented.

Multiwavelength Brillouin Erbium fiber laser with ultra-narrow bandwidth filter is used as a temperature sensor. It has less than 10−3 °C resolution at the 3rd-order Stokes in the short term. 3.104 MHz/°C sensitivity of the 3rd-order Stokes wavelength are demonstrated, which is three times that of the 1st-order Stokes wavelength. A less than 0.2 °C temperature error is obtained for every Stokes wavelength. This proposal can provide a feasible temperature sensing scheme with high sensitivity, high precision and low frequency detection.
