In this paper, a tunable and cascaded Brillouin-erbium random fiber laser (RFL) has been proposed and experimentally investigated. The scheme of a half-open cavity is used to provide random distributed feedback (RDFB). The results show the proposed RFL has one to four Stokes lines when 980 nm pump power increases from 130 mW to 297 mW and Brillouin pump is equal to 2 mW. Output lasing wavelengths can be tuned by changing Brillouin pump wavelengths. The effect of fiber lengths used as RDFB on output lasing power has also been detected.

We have demonstrated a long distance distributed vibration fiber-optic sensing system based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (φ-OTDR). Without any additional components, vibration detection utilizing heterodyne detection and digital coherent detection is successfully demonstrated over a 50-km-long optical fiber and the external disturbance signal simulated by PZT is well restored with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of ∼32.8 dB through phase difference method. For the first time, the distributed vibration sensing based on phase-extraction is realized in optical fiber over such a long distance. This measuring technique is ideal for applications in fields of oil and gas pipeline monitoring, national borders and can be further optimized to realize the longer sensing distance.

A low frequency fiber acoustic sensor based on the transduction of 10nm thickness graphene diaphragm has been experimentally demonstrated. The ultra thin graphene diaphragm is used as a reflecting surface to form an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer. The diameter of the graphene diaphragm is selected as 125 pm, thus the resonant frequency of 25958Hz is obtained. The sensitivity of the acoustic pressure can be as high as 43.5dB re 1 V/Pa@60Hz. Moreover, the minimum detectable acoustic pressure of 171.6pPa/Hz1/2@60Hz is achieved. The compact structure, simple manufacture and low cost fiber acoustic sensor can be realized.

We investigated specific common optical parametric generation (OPG) using a 532nm pump beam along the x axis of a square lattice two-dimensional periodically poled lithium tantalate (2D-PPLT). Twin-beam generation are observed with the signal or the idler beams propagating collinearly and the other OPG counterpart non-collinearly to the pump beam due to participation of reciprocal lattice vectors (RLV) of K1,±1. Multi-wavelength dual-beam generation are also observed due to contributions from K1,0 and K1,±1.

In this letter, we demonstrated a 1×4 folded silicon photonics arrayed waveguide grating integrated with ring-mirrors at the end of arrayed waveguides on SOI platform. Each reflective ring-mirror is composed of a 1×2 MMI splitter/combiner and a bend silicon nanowire waveguide in the end of each arrayed waveguide. Compared to a normal arrayed waveguide grating, the structure of the ring-mirror-integrated arrayed waveguide grating is only half. The measured transmission loss is about 3.5 dB and the crosstalk is around 20 dB. The measured channel spacing is 6.7 nm.

We demonstrate the high resolution beam steering of a highly dispersive VCSEL-based amplifier. By using p-type GaAs substrate, the uniform current injection was carried out for 1mm long device and we obtained the maximum deflection angle of 33° and a beam divergence angle of 0.08° resulting in resolution points of over 300.

We proposed a normalized model to describe the general behaviors of polarization pulling in fiber optical parametric amplifiers (FOPAs). We adopted a modified interpolation function to analyze the simulation results and found that FOPAs using fibers with moderate PMD coefficient can achieve strong polarization pulling with relatively small gain.

We propose a novel method for active switching of optical deflection angle via the phase change of GeiSbiTes (GST) metasurface. The metasurface is composed of GST nanorods whose geometries are designed by means of Pancharatnam-Berry phase and propagation phase to switch transmission directivity via the phase change. As a result, assuming normal incidence of circularly polarized light at the wavelength of 1650 nm, we achieved deflection angle switching of transmitted light with cross-polarization from −24.4° to +24.4° according to change of GST phase from the amorphous to the crystalline phase.

A thulium-doped fiber chirped pulse amplifier (FCPA) is presented and used to pump a ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (ZBLAN) fiber for mid-infrared supercontinuum generation. The FCPA delivers 10 W average power at repetition rate of 10 MHz with pulse width of 252 fs. The pulses are coupled into 10 m ZBLAN fiber using an aspheric lens. Maximum output power of 800 mW corresponding to pulse energy of 80 nJ has been obtained with 5 dB spectrum ranging from 2 μm to 3.5 μm, which is limited by the low pump coupling efficiency of ∼10% at this time.
