Education, Political Trust, and Perceptions of Distributive Justice——An Empirical Research in China 教育、政治信任与分配公平感——中国的实证研究

Using data from the General Social Survey of Wuhan in 2014, this paper designs three paths to analyze the direct and indirect effects between education and perception of distributive justice   income. The first path explores whether education directly affects people’s feeling of distributive justice. The second path connects education to socioeconomic status in to determine whether higher status creates a higher perception of distributive justice. The last path introduces political trust as mediating variable to evaluate the relationship between political trust and justice perception. Results show that only education can promote the feeling of justice through improving people’s political trust.
本文利用2014年武汉市社会总体调查的数据,设计了三条路径来分析教育与收入分配公平感之间的直接和间接影响。第一条路径探讨教育是否直接影响人们的分配正义感。第二条路径将教育与社会经济地位联系起来,以确定更高的地位是否会产生更高的分配正义感。最后一条路径引入政治信任作为中介变量来评估政治信任与正义感之间的关系。结果表明,只有教育才能通过提高人们的政治信任来促进正义感。

The Role of Spirituality in Cultural Adjustment of Asian International Students 精神在亚洲留学生文化适应中的作用

Many Asian international students face adjustment challenges as they live and study in the United States (US). While it is largely unrecognized in the West, collectivist spirituality is an essential part of Asian cultures and functions as a potent source of resilience. This article, therefore, explores spirituality and describes how it functions as a coping mechanism for Asian international during their cross-cultural adjustment. Additionally, implications are made for university-based counselors, educators, and administrators to better support this student population.

Development and initial validation of the Personal and Social Responsibility Scale for Physical Education Settings 体育环境个人和社会责任量表的编制与初步验证

 This study aims to develop a valid instrument measuring personal and social responsibility in physical education settings that is suitable for Chinese high school students age 14 and above. This instrument consists of eight aspects, which builds upon the levels of responsibility in Hellison’s (2011)[9] Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility Model (TPSR). The eight aspects in the measurement include goal, responsibility, respecting the rights and feelings of others, participation and effort, self-direction, caring, and value. The validation of the measurement was conducted based on the responses from 1091 high school students in Macau, China. The convergent and discriminant validity tests and a maximum likelihood confirmation factor analysis were performed using AMOS 21. The Bollen-Stine bootstrapping model was applied to adjust nonnormality data. Results supported a good validity and reliability of the items in the instrument.

Need Saliency and Academic Behavior of Technical Students in India: Implications for Career Sustaining Competences 印度技术学生的需求显著性和学术行为:对职业持续能力的影响

In the current scenario of rapid expansion of higher education, it becomes imperative to study the dynamic factors underlying quality education, student motivation and learning outcomes. Most of the literature available as on date are predominantly based on western studies, where the individual’s personal achievement, autonomy, control, power are considered to be most important. But these western models often influenced by their individualistic philosophy and cultural values are quite inapplicable for pluralistic Indian society, where we believe in collaboration and teamwork. Rare attempts have been made to develop an indigenous model to measure these attributes in our society. The present study is first of its kind to assess the salient and non-salient needs of technical students pursuing their studies in India. Authors have identified measures of the students’ engagement in various academic, co-curricular activities and their performance outcomes. A sample of Four-hundred and Sixty-five (N=465) engineering/science students were collected through purposive sampling exclusively from IIT Kharagpur , a premier technical institute in eastern India where students across the country got selected and joined on merit basis, through the national level joint entrance examination for Engineering and Science, the toughest examination in the country, known as IIT-JEE. Career implications are discussed in light of the major findings.

The Impact of Hearing Loss on Health: Interprofessional Guidance for Health and Primary Care Providers (PCPs) 听力损失对健康的影响:卫生和初级保健提供者(pcp)的跨专业指导

In the United States, approximately one in eight (13 percent, or 30 million) individuals aged 12 years or older has bilateral hearing loss. When unaddressed and untreated, hearing loss is associated with and contributes to other significant health issues; specifically, social isolation, depression, stress, and anxiety, incidental falls, dementia and impaired cognition, and reduced quality of life. This is a public health concern. Health and primary care providers are in a unique position to have a positive impact by probing the hearing of the patients they see, providing information, and making appropriate referrals to reduce deleterious effects when this impairment occurs.

Athletic Participation and Academic Achievement of High School Students: A Longitudinal Study of Athletic and Non-Athletic Participants 高中生体育参与与学业成绩:一项体育与非体育参与者的纵向研究

The majority of extant research studies have established that high school students’ athletic participation is positively associated with several educational outcomes, including academic performance. However, the effect of long-term athletic participation on academic performance remains unclear. Using a longitudinal data of 220 students from a high school in eastern Massachusetts of the United States, this study has revealed that athletic participants in this school started with a statistically significant higher GPA than non-participants in the first year of study, and have continued to be higher in the following two years, lag behind significantly, however, in academic achievement growth from their non-participation counterparts. The results of the study call for thoughtful decision-making regarding sports programs and athletic policies, proper guidance and adequate support for athletes and an optimal sport-academic culture in American high schools.

Implementing the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement: A Case Study of the Vhembe West District, South Africa 课程和评估政策声明的实施:以南非Vhembe西区为例

This qualitative study was undertaken to investigate how district officials implemented Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement in the Vhembe West District in South Africa. Interview data were collected and used for themes identification. The study identified the following challenges that the district officials experienced as they performed their duties: insufficient resources, lack of finances to buy learning and teaching support materials, infrastructure failures, the district’s inadequate support to schools, shortage of district officials in certain disciplines, unclear roles, lack of collaboration, unavailability of follow-up visits, the shortage of computers for the district officials and teacher support materials, bribery and corruption of selling principalship posts, slow filling of district officials posts, and inappropriate skills for school management and leadership. The study concluded that qualified district officials should be appointed, ongoing support from the Department of Basic Education and provision of resources in ensuring smooth curriculum implementation is needed, and bribery and corruption should be stopped when school principal appointments are made. This study also concludes that the district officials should be continuously capacitated so that they should be able to meet curriculum challenges, and the Department of Basic Education should speed up the curriculum delivery by ensuring that the vacancies are filled up.

Is Shared Governance Feasible in Public Higher Education Institutions of China? 共享治理在中国公立高校是否可行?

Economic development and rapid changes in technology have considerable impact on higher education in China. To prepare skilled highly-educated workforce and meet the demand for research development and productivity, higher education institutions in China are under a great pressure of adapting and implementing organizational change (Li et al. 2011).  This paper starts with an overview of the higher educational transformations in China in the past decades. Then the author assesses the shared governance practice in the U.S. and discusses the potential and limitations for China to adopt shared governance in the near future.

The Impact of a Comprehensive Program on College Success of Academically and Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Students 综合计划对学业和社会经济弱势学生大学成功的影响

Low rates in college graduation and persistence have been a significant and persistent issue among urban high school graduates in the Unites States of America, especially for the academically and socioeconomically disadvantaged student population. In response to a college completion initiative, higher education institutions in one large city have joined forces to battle this issue. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the effects of one such university’s comprehensive support program on public high school graduates’ success in college graduation and persistence, and identifies a set of unique high impact practices that have contributed to the success of the program.

Strangers in a New Land: Rural School Personnel’s Perceptions of the Implementation of an International Student Program 异乡人:农村学校工作人员对留学生项目实施的认知

Many high schools in the northeastern United States have suffered from declining enrollment due to a declining population of school-age children in the region. Administrators, counselors and teachers perceive many impacts of the implementation of an international student program at a rural high school. This qualitative case study reveals that the rural high school’s unique nature impacts international student programs, international students influence both school culture and programming, and international students suffer from isolation. School leaders would benefit from considerations in the form of professional development both prior to implementation of an international student program and ongoing throughout its duration. It is important for schools to find ways to respectfully honor student cultures and optimize learning experiences. School leaders would be wise to determine desired size of international student programs and make efforts accordingly to achieve that size for optimal effectiveness for the benefit of both host and international students. Implications and recommendations for future research include further exploration of the perceived experiences of European and Chinese international students, understanding the unique nature of rural high schools and international student experiences, and examination of school practices.
