An object-relational database infrastructure has been developed in our project, which could be used as a framework for new-generation multimedia databases. In this paper, we review the proposed infrastructure, and present our design and implementation of a prototype database system based on the infrastructure. The object-relational approach is adopted, as we believe it is capable of handling both simple and composite media objects, as well as managing complex relationships among these objects. Useful schema's have been developed in our prototype, which supports features such as authoring, editing, searching, navigating, browsing, and presenting. Our current implementation is based on the Oracle 7 and Video Server, and we plan to migrate the implementation to either Illustra, or Oracle 8, in the near future. That would enable us to further demonstrate some enhanced features of the proposed object-relational infrastructure, including complex data type management of, and query-oriented data access to, the multimedia data.

Modern radars are mostly dependent upon coherent digital signal processing. This paper describes the implementation of a corrector of in-phase and quadrature errors in a coherent processor. The correcting network consists of a combination logic circuit and it can correct the gain and phase imbalances and the bias errors of the in-phase and quadrature channels in coherent signal processing. The correcting coefficients are computed with DSP using a test signal. The image level without correction is about -30 dB if the errors of gain and phase in the coherent processor are 0.5 dB and 1 degree respectively. The experimental results show that the image level is reduced to -50 dB from -30 dB after correcting the errors.

Subband filter banks with non-uniform passband distribution in frequency domain are studied. Several design examples are presented and compared with conventional uniform bandwidth filter banks. Image coding results show that filter banks with non-uniform bandwidth outperform filter banks with uniform bandwidth, especially in low bit rate coding.

The application of cross-correlation was tested for its suitability for active noise control of structure borne noise resulted from flexible panel vibration. The results on computer simulation show a great potential for its application in suppression of plate vibration. However in practical applications there are limitations, such as computation of the delay time shift, digital sampling of the driving and response signals and the generation of analog actuating signals at the controller. Even with these limitations, the results show a global reduction of sound power radiated from the plate of between 0.5 to 3.8 dB. An advantage of the technique is its simplicity in operation and ease of implementation.

It is demonstrated analytically that the static light-current characteristic of an injection-locked laser is highly linear away from the threshold and is suitable for direct intensity modulation. By using a small signal perturbative approach, expressions for the second order harmonic distortion and two-carrier third order intermodulation distortion are evaluated. At microwave frequencies, it is demonstrated that these distortions can be significantly reduced using injection locking. This is attributed to additional coupling effects between optical phase and photons under injection locking, in addition to the photon-electron interactions seen in free-running lasers.

In today's information technology (IT) age, the traditional role of teachers and learners is being changed by multimedia courseware. Hypermedia offers much to learners in terms of providing an environment that engages the learner, allowing the construction of knowledge in a meaningful way. However, these packages lack intelligent tutors. Intelligent multimedia tutoring systems (IMTS) can offer some solutions by providing students multimedia interface features with the added ability to monitor the student's performance and to provide guidance towards the correct solution using methods of inquiry teaching. Current ITS suffer from expensive artificial intelligence (AI) inference engines, the inability for the expert to learn and handle radical strategy variability, and large empirical search spaces. Although a myriad of ITS exists, no one single topology provides a perfect solution. The main objective of this project was to provide an optimal solution to implementing an ITS component for the hypermedia IMTS, to coach in the domain of data structures. The pre-requisites for the topology chosen were low cost, high efficiency, platform independence, and the ability to be used on the World Wide Web (WWW). ADIS was successfully implemented and integrated with a graphical user interface (GUI) to interact with students The current framework contains the linked list, stack, and queue microworlds.

A new integrable fully-balanced wide-frequency current-tunable all-pass filter is presented. The architecture of the circuit is relatively simple and provides symmetry with differential signals. The corner frequency is linearly tunable, through a bias current, over a wide-frequency sweep range of approximately three orders of magnitude. The maximum useful corner frequency is in excess of 112 MHz.

An intelligent multimedia tutoring system (IMTS) is under development to support a university course on data structures in C. The IMTS is written in Java and can rest on a parent canvas either designed specifically for it or based on a proprietary standard like a web browser or standalone application. It supports algorithms on linked lists, queues, stacks and binary search trees. The user interface is interactive with students manipulating the nodes of on-screen data structures in order to further their understanding or, in tutorial mode, to solve exercises set by the IMTS. The IMTS will respond to exercises with feedback and suggestions for further study. This paper describes our implementation of Ohlsson's (1992) constrained-based student modeling.

This paper describes an optimized ATM-PON based FTTH access network to provide residential subscribers with full services. The FTTH (fiber to the home) is a final target to support voice, data and video communication to and from the home. Up to now, a major obstacle to the deployment of FTTH has been the expensive cost of the optical module and fiber. The PON (passive optical network) architecture provides a common platform towards achieving a cost effective optical access network including FTTH. In addition, the ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) is the basic transport mechanism of the B-ISDN (broadband integrated services digital network) which offers flexibility in terms of service transparency and bandwidth allocation. We propose an optimized architecture of an ATM-PON based FTTH access network to provide residential subscribers with full services economically.

Due to the rapid growth of the Internet, many Internet service providers (ISPs) have sprung up in Korea. The typical access of their dial-up Internet services is for user to subscribe to an ISP and pay a monthly flat rate. But the rate is relatively expensive to a large number of users with occasional access. Therefore they are unwilling to join the Internet. This causes a loss of users to the ISPs and an obstacle to the Internet's growth. Meanwhile, as the contents providers (CPs) provide much better services, they tend to become commercial sites and, moreover, want to have their own billing method. The ISPs, therefore, have a need to provide an appropriate billing policy for the commercial CPs. We describe a dial-up Internet access service system with an automatic billing mechanism which is implemented to cope with the above trend. The system provides users with easy Internet access. It performs automatic billing based on the call connection time and the amount of data used. We expect, due to the system, the ISPs will attract a large number of new users and to be able to cope with changes in the CPs billing appropriately.
