Abstract:This manuscript examines the racial-sexual anxieties of slavery and its afterlives as they are articulated in contemporary Black queer visual culture. An engagement with cultural history, visual studies, and Black porn studies, the manuscript traces the (dis)appearance of Black queer sexuality within the colonial archive. Placing this scholarship in conversation with DePaul Vera's My Soul to Keep, it posits that white supremacy is intimately connected to expressions of sexual anti-Blackness in mainstream queer culture. The manuscript offers Black queer pleasure as a corrective to normative conceptualizations of Black sexuality, embracing the liberatory potential of our practices in intimacy and relationality.

Abstract:Over the past decade, progress in the social and political climate among LGBT Americans has been impressive. However, are all subgroups experiencing that process equally? More specifically, for example, what is the sociopolitical involvement of Black LGBT people within the mainstream (White) community? Using a national sample of LGBT Black people (N=1,363), this article examines the relative importance of a variety of characteristics in understanding Black LGBT respondent's sociopolitical involvement. Hierarchical regression modeling revealed that being comfortable within the larger LGBT community, gender, age, sexual identity, and relationship status all proved to be significant. The implications of these findings are discussed regarding future research with Black LGBT populations.

Abstract:Research describes how Black cisgender queer men become limited in their sexual identity development when they internalize anti-gay messages disseminated from familial, religious, and social spaces. A hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative research study was conducted to explore nine Black cisgender same gender loving men's experiences with homonegativity. Results suggest that internalized homonegativity may reflect challenges that transcend same sex sexual and romantic engagement. Internalized homonegativity may arise due to fear of lost privilege that is contingent on masculine performance in various social contexts.

The purpose of the current study was to explore pleasure mapping among (N=215) Black women living in the South using Black Feminist Thought and Cite Black Women critical praxis. Participants identified 78 activities that were most pleasurable. There were nine distinct themes of activities including oral sex, foreplay, clitoral and combined stimulation, masturbation, penetration, sensuality, shared intimacy, self- and partnered body awareness, and power and control. Findings from this study inform a pleasure mapping technique. Implications for sexualities educators are provided.
