Passing It Forward: Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ Elders Sharing the Wisdom from Their Walk

In this moment of racial reckoning throughout the united States, how are the voices of older LGBTQ+ Black and Latinx individuals being captured and stored? While large collections of archives exist curating LGBTQ+ local, regional, and national artifacts, far too few of those collections are digitized, fewer are oneonone interviews (where respondents are allowed to be heard in their own words), and even fewer are oneonone interviews with older LGBTQ+ Black and Latinx individuals. Th is project— Passing It Forward— seeks to fi ll that gap by conducting 150 oneonone interviews, via Zoom, from January 2021 thru June 2021, with this very unique population. Th e interview protocol gathered information about the respondents’ background, professional and political activism, as well as their insights on prescribing a more inclusive future for racial minorities, sexual minorities, and their intersections. Within this collection of papers, some of the undergraduate and graduate students who collected the data then wrote these articles exploring a plethora of research questions. Because the researchers tended to be one— or two, and sometimes three— generations younger than the person they interviewed, this project will provide a venue to allow these changemakers to educate and inspire. So then, how do racial and sexual orientation identity enhance or inhibit the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) changemakers? For this target population, three specifi c areas were investigated:

Abstract:This paper uses thirteen one-on-one semi-structured interviews with LGBTQ+ elders of color and applies classical sociological theories of Weber and Durkheim with an intersectional lens to examine the role of religion in the participants’ lives, with attention to how individual perception of spirituality changes over time. Results reveal three overlapping themes: community through religious faith, activism within religion, and mixed experiences with religion, suggesting the need for acceptance in different communities and reflecting differing perspectives on spirituality. Findings point to new directions for future research on religious/spiritual journeys of LGBTQ+ elders of color.

The Wisdom in Hindsight: What Advice Would Older LGBTQ+ Women of Color Give to their Younger Selves?
Pub Date : 2022-02-09 DOI: 10.1353/bsr.2021.0013
Brianna Caprio
Abstract:With hindsight, many of us may wish we had done things differently when we were younger, or wish we could offer advice to our younger, less experienced selves. This study explored whether advice LGBTQ+ women of color aged 50+ give their younger selves reflected regret or fit into the 12 life domains Roese and Summerville (2005) indicated that most regrets fall. Data were collected from 15 one-on-one interviews with eligible participants. Findings indicated three major themes in advice: be less fearful, embrace who they are, and harbor no regrets. This study adds to the paucity of literature surrounding advice elders wish they could give their younger selves.

Abstract:This research explores the contributions of LGBTQ+ elders of color and their insights regarding how activists of all ages can affect meaningful change. In-depth interviews with a convenience sample of 11 respondents took place via Zoom as part of a larger national research project. Informed by Marxian theories and intersectionality, data analysis focused on the forms of change-making work respondents considered most important. Findings suggest that LGBTQ+ elders of color value change-making activities that provide (a.) opportunities for intergenerational collaboration, (b.) nurturance from friends and family, and (c.) contribute to a more just, inclusive world for all.

Colorism and Racial Identity Development in Black/African American Women: An Autoethnographic Perspective

Abstract:This paper examines the phenomenon of colorism within the Black community, as well racial/ethnic identity development as impacted by colorism. Colorism is defined as bias which exists based upon an individual's skin tone as compared to others of their particular race (Russell, Wilson, & Hall, 2013). Color plays an important role in racial and ethnic identity development, although it is seldom addressed either empirically or conceptually. This paper examines the historical context and current implications of colorism as it relates to identity development, and identifies areas of focus related to clinical practice and future research.
