This paper presents a novel LDA algorithm named 2DHLDA (2-Dimensional Heteroscedastic Linear Discriminant Analysis). The proposed algorithms are applied on age-group classification using facial images under various lighting conditions. 2DHLDA significantly overcomes the singularity problem, so-called 'Small Sample Size' problem (S3 problem), and the original feature space is split into useful dimensions and nuisance dimensions to reduce the influence of different lighting conditions. A two-phased dimensional reduction step, namely 2DHLDA+LDA, is used in our experiment. Our experimental results show that the new 2DHLDA-based approach improves classification accuracy more than the conventional 1D and 2D-based approaches.

We propose a criterion, called maximal redundancy, for onset detection in time series. The concept redundancy is adopted from information theory and indicates how well a signal locally can be explained by an underlying model. It is shown that a local maximum in the redundancy is a good indicator for an onset. It is proven that maximal redundancy detection is a statistical asymptotically optimal detector for AR processes. It also accounts for potentially non-Gaussian time series and non- Gaussian innovations in the AR processes. Several applications are shown where the new criterion has been successfully applied.

Reference point detection is an important process for fingerprint analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel feature which is named local axial symmetry (LAS) and present an algorithm to calculate reference point of a fingerprint based on this kind of feature. Experimental results demonstrate its feasibility, validity and the ability to detect reference points of all classes of fingerprints including arch-type fingerprints which is difficult to locate a stable reference point with other methods.

In a process for the production of oxygen by two-stage low-temperature rectification of air wherein the air is cooled in a primary heat exchanger, and the product oxygen is withdrawn from the low-pressure stage and warmed by heat exchange in a heat exchanger separate from the primary heat exchanger with a gaseous stream fed to the high-pressure stage, a gaseous stream fed to the high-pressure stage, a gaseous stream being withdrawn as the compensating stream from the high-pressure stage, warmed at least partially in the primary heat exchanger countercurrently to the entering air, and expanded in at least one turbine, the improvement which comprises recooling the compensating stream prior to entering the turbines, by heat exchange with the product oxygen in said heat exchanger separate from the primary heat exchanger.
