Seventy years on from the discovery of DNA, we’re still learning about the intricacies of our genome – and have much more to learn. An area of focus for Dr Alan Herbert, InsideOutBio Inc, USA, is alternative nucleic acid structures. These differ in structure from the original B-DNA first described by Watson and Crick in 1953. However, the genome contains many repeat sequences capable of forming alternative DNA structures under physiological conditions, like left-handed Z-DNA and four-stranded quadruplexes. These genetically encoded elements are called flipons.

are devices that vary the flow of electrical current between a ‘source’ and a ‘drain’ electrode. This flow is controlled using a semiconductor: a material which can act as either a conductor or an insulator, depending on the strength of the electrical field passing across it. By fine-tuning this field, also known as the ‘gate voltage’, users can alter the semiconductor’s conductivity, in turn, varying the flow of the current between the source and drain electrodes, which are placed on top of the semiconductor.

pollution, and economic growth are fuelling climate change. Our actions impact the planet, which in turn impacts us. In a recent review article, Michael Santos and João Lanzinha (University of Beira Interior, Portugal) and Ana Vaz Ferreira (Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco, Portugal) share that the residential sector contributes 40% to global energy consumption as people strive for thermal comfort (that is, achieving an ideal indoor environment through heating or cooling) in their homes and business buildings. These processes require significant energy inputs, contributing more than 30% to the world’s carbon dioxide emissions. However, there could be a way to harness sustainable development designs to reduce energy consumption.

Global Institute, the population growth rate in South-East Asia, in every age group, is higher than the global average. Two-thirds of consumption growth to 2030 will come from increased per capita spending; the remaining one-third will be from population growth. This is placing severe pressure on the region’s farmers to boost food production, especially in sectors such as beef and dairy, where there has been increased demand thanks to the region’s burgeoning economies. Smallholder cattle farmers, however, are battling several constraints in meeting this demand – the inability to boost yields in the face of ongoing risks of transboundary diseases and endemic parasites, and increasing global concern around bovine greenhouse gas emissions.
