The relation between age and taste threshold in populations living both in Istanbul and Resadiye, a town located in eastern part of Turkey, was investigated. In Turkey the nontaster/taster ratio has been found lower than in the other countries of Europe and Asia (3 ,4 ,8 ,9). With aging the taste sensitivity of tasters does diminish. However, the differences in the taste threshold levels of nontasters, in different age groups, have been found as being statistically not significant.

Addition of salts (NaCl and MgCl2) to isolated cell wall of E. coli cause appreciable contraction in volume. This contraction in volume of the cell walls is probably due to binding of the ions to wall polymers, including the peptidoglycan layer and the concomitant release of protons. The peptidoglycan layer of the cell wall is thus an elastic rather than a rigid layer.

Two species of fish, tuna fish (Euthynnus spp.) from the Persian Gulf and pikeperch (Lucioperca lucioperca) from the Caspian Sea were examined for nematode larvae. The larvae of Anisakis which is considered to be one of the zoonotic helminths, was found in 75 percent of the tuna fish and 20 percent of the pikeperch. The possible role of fish as a source of infection in man in Iran is discussed.

A case of invasion of the human ear by the German cockroach Blattella germanica (L) IN Mash'had, Khorassan, Iran is described. As far as the Author is aware this is the first such case recorded and published from Iran.

The effect of four adrenoceptor antagonists, chosen because of reported differences in their selectivities, were compared using the positive chronotropic response to isoprenaline on isolated rabbit atria. Oxprenolol was the most potent antagonist of the isoprenaline induced cardiac arrhythmias. Alprenolol, practolol and propranolol also blocked the positive chronotropic responses to isoprenaline effectively. All the antagonists lowered the resting heart rate. The effects of all four selected antagonists on heart rate probably result from cardiac beta adrenoceptor blockade. Atria isolated from reserpine treated rabbits, showed a reduced percentage of increase in the heart rate in response to addition of isoprenaline. This decreased response has been related in some cases to direct myocardial inhibition.

Viral studies were carried out in 47 children with clinical features of paralytic poliomyelitis. Forty-seven healthy children matched in age and sex were used as controls. Fourteen cases of polioviruses were isolated from the paralyzed children. Of these, 10 isolates were of type one, 2 type two and 2 type three. Among the healthy children two polioviruses were isolated, one type 1 and one type three. The importance of vaccination against poliomyelitis is emphasized.

Oral glucose tolerance tests were performed on 16 addicts and 16 control subjects. A flat delayed glucose response was demonstrated, with hyperinsulinaemia, elevated plasma growth hormone and normal plasma cortisol in heroin addicts compared with control subjects. These studies suggest a relative insulin resistance in addicts which might be mediated by the elevated growth hormone or some other pharmacologic effect of the chronic opiate abuse.

Gastroenteritis is a serious problem among young children in Shiraz Iran and often requires antibiotic therapy as it is commonly superimposed on other debilitating clinical conditions. Stool specimens from over four hundred cases of gastroenteritis among children up to six years of age were examined for the presence of bacterial pathogens and the pattern of drug sensitivity for each pathogenic genus was determined. The presence of infectious drug resistance factors among these isolates was also established.
