There has been some controversy about the real creator of the sport of water skiing The American Water Ski Association gives credit to Ralph Samuelson who, m 1922, watersk~ed on homemade skis at Lake City, Minnesota behind a 24 horsepower launch, and subsequently travelled throughout North America giving exhibitions for some IS years However, Dick Pope Sr claims it was the Late Fred Waller, creator of Cinerama who first rode on skies of his own

The physician in athletics must, therefore, make absolutely certain that his recommendations, his demands, his minimum standards are known in every instance. Should he be ignored for reasons of economy or because of long-range projects of greater importance and the like, his position should remain unchanged-a steadfast insistence on nothing but the best in equipment and playing conditions for each and every athlete! In short, if any school, college, or professional franchise cannot fulfill the equipment requirements for a given sport, it cannot afford that sport. The responsibility for making these requirements known is the doctor’s and his alone, but the ultimate responsibility must lie with that school, college, or professional franchise that chooses to ignore these requirements

overuse syndromes. While there is abundant literature which describes the etiology, symptoms and management of various injuries sustained by runners, there is limited information regarding the incidence and distribution of these injuries with respect to such variables as classification, site (anatomic) and competitive event (running). A knowledge of the relative incidence, treatment and results of treatment of injuries to runners should provide not only a basis for better management but also a probable basis for increased utilization of preventive measures and earlier recognition and treatment of these injuries.

Anatomic studies of the knee have led to confusion regarding the importance and function of the cruciate ligaments. Herzmark’ noted extremely well-developed cruciates in the cat and the macaque, whose weight-bearing activity occurred with the knee partially flexed Because man had an erect posture and bore weight with the knee extended, Herzmark believed that the cruciate ligaments were relatively unimportant in stability of the human knee and that the ligaments represented vestigial structures. Studies by Brantigan and Voshell,2 and later by Helfet,3 described the functional anatomic importance of the cruciate ligaments

Five cases have been collected by the author since 1966. The age of presentation was between 11 and 12 years and the presenting symptoms were pain and inability to perform associated with a long history of little league pitching. Signs have been limitation of motion, diffuse antenor tenderness over the glenohumeral joint and a slight fullness of this area. Followup on this series is six years with one year minimum on the most

Because of the significance of this health hazard, the Rainbow Sports Medicine Center attempted to investigate this problem. Utilizing the testing apparatus developed by the Biomechanics Laboratory to test adult bindings, five popular children’s bindings were tested. The same 28 tests per binding were applied to children’s bindings after the testing machine was modified to accept the child’s binding. The same principle of measuring the forces and moments at the boot top was utilized. The bindings tested demonstrated a failure rate of 26%, failing 37 out of a total
