movement begins is still unknown. The only advantage we have m the matter today over the ancients is that there are several drugs which can control seizures m 90 percent of patients, even though it is not known how these drugs work or where in the brain they exert their influence. Thus, any &dquo;learned comments&dquo; concerning whether such patients should participate in certain physical activities is only based on speculation and theory, and there has been much of that.

A soccer injury in which a forward frac tures his tibia and fibula in a collision with the goaltender was witnessed by the author three times in one season. In each instance the mechanism of injury was the same. If the players are instructed to recognize and an ticipte the injury-situation, then this injury can be avoided.

Te presence of a reflex mechamsm m man which triggers a bradycardia during apnea has gained rather wide acceptance in the literature. In resting man, there has been observed a heightened bradycardia with apneic face immersion in water. Past investigators have observed both a &dquo;breath holding&dquo; and a &dquo;water immersion&dquo; or &dquo;diving&dquo; reflex in the resting man. However, there is disagreement in the studies which have investigated the presence of these reflexes in exercising man. Several investigators observed bradycardia during apneic dmes. Anderson3 12 concluded that bradycardia persists in spite of vigorous exercise as in the case of diving vertebrates. Craig and Medd 15 criticized the lack of control of work in earlier studies and concluded that

This Study was supported by Michael W Louis, The Sports Foundation, Inc. and the W W. Grainger Foundation, Inc. Attention has been drawn to knee injuries in football but these injuries can only end the careers of famous football players while head injuries can be fatal. This paper will point to the problem and include the development of the present day helmet, information needed to improve head protection, how to acquire this knowledge, the data on six hundred and fifty impacts to the head of a football player obtained by telemetry and an explanation of the discrepancies between this data and that which has been measured in the laboratory. The commonly quoted fatality statistics on head injunes in football give no indication of the true incidence of brain trauma. Although concussion refers to some degree of loss of consciousness after impact with little if any gross evidence of brain damage and likely to be temporary, it will be used in this paper to indicate any degree of brain injury that is accompanied by loss of consciousness. The injury statistics quoted by Robey (1) imply that fifty-four thousand concus-
