Head injuries in sports can occur in many ways: by direct body contact, such as in football and boxing; by shoe or foot direct contact to the head, or head to head contact sometimes even between team mates; from a fall, such as in football, on the trampoline, or in ice skating; when the player is struck by a moving object other than the opponent’s body, e.g., in baseball or golf when one of the participants is struck by a ball or by a bat, and occasionally in the field events in track, even in the hammer throw; in a collision, e.g., with a goal post or retaining wall, as in football, rugby, tennis, and indoor sports such as basketball when the sidelines are too close to the wall or to the bleachers. Sexual evaluation of "female" athletes. “女”运动员的性别评价。

In this article prepared especially for The Journal of Sports Medicine, Professor Jules François, Director of the Division of Medical Genetics at the University of Ghent Ophthalmological Clinic, Belgium, and Professor M. Th. Matton-Van Leuven describe the cytogenetic meth ods used in sex typing of female athletes, together with a discussion of the moral, medical and athletic implications of sex typing as prac ticed today. Since the May 1967 ruling of the International Olympics Committee, sex determination tests have been required of all female athletes, in an attempt to prevent male athletes from competing as women. At present, determination of sex is accomplished by means of analysis of sex chromatin granules obtained from swabs of oral mucosa. In their pioneer study, "Male and Female Sex Determination in Hair Roots," which received international acclaim when published in 1971 (Clin Gen 2), Dr. François and Dr. Matton-Van Leuven re ported their clinical findings on a new, more effective method of sex determination, discussed here in this first original study of the total effect of sexual evaluation on the female athlete.

Subluxing biceps tendon in the athlete. 运动员二头肌肌腱半脱位。

Subluxation or dislocation of the long head of the biceps tendon from the bicipital groove is one of the common causes of shoulder disability in the throwing arm of the athlete. This condition has characteristic symptoms; pain on throwing and relieved by rest; palpable snap at a certain point in the arc of motion. The signs are tenderness over the bicipital groove and a reproducible pop in rotation of the humeral head. The diagnosis can be quite secure and is often confirmed by X-rays profiling the bicipital tunnel. The remedy is a relatively nontraumatic operation which removes the biceps tendon from the shoulder and fastens it into the bicipital groove. To take the young athlete who can no longer throw, and by a procedure of short morbidity permit him to throw without inhibition, is very gratifying both to patient and physician. Definitive diagnosis of shoulder lesions in the young athlete is mandatory for any effective treatment.
