The importance of communication in organizational nursing culture and the nursing manager skills to improve the process of communicating are emphasized in this work. Communication ways in the nursing setting and the nurses' view about effectiveness of these ways are related.

The objective of the study was to verify the condition of the tegument of the newborn in the first attendance to nursing follow-up after hospital discharge and to detect the actions undertaken by the mothers in the care of the newborns' skin and mucosa. The data were obtained through physical exam performed in 40 newborn in March and April of 1989. The problems most frequently identified were related to stump and skin rash caused by diapering. Daily bathing and the application of alcohol 70% on the stump were the practices most frequently utilized in relation to the skin.

This investigation is part of a transcultural research project on women and health, which has as its conceptual framework women's life experiences. This research is qualitative in nature, and the methodology utilized is a content analysis of the documented discourses of a group of lower class women in Ribeirão Preto (SP). The results demonstrate that for these women, health is much more than the absence of disease". Their health concerns are biological, interpersonal, social and economic in nature, and are based more upon their personal experiences and social perceptions than on the concept of health and disease. The importance of this research is its relevance for quality nursing care which takes into consideration the many aspects of being a woman.

The present article refers to aspects of nonverbal communication, the importance in interpersonal relations and emotions that can be identified of nonverbal form. It's shows the guide to help nurse's perception of nonverbal signals emitted by himself and by the patients which may express emotions.

The author tried to identify the producer of knowledge; the vehicle used; the addressed, based on the presentation the nurse's functions; the processes of elaboration, divulgation and utilization of the knowledge; the theoretical and methodological approaches used in the studies of communication in nursing 1725 quotations in this subject were identified on the table of contents of INI, CINAHL and IMLA. 640 were available in Brazil and 98.1% of them were analysed. The greatest amount of publications were concerned to caring, (46.7%) followed by the educational (25.2%) and administrative (14.1%) areas. Most of the authors are centralized on the process of the production of Knowledge (79.4%). The most expressive theoretical embasement is related to interpersonal context. The most frequent methodological procedures show the initial state of the knowledge in this area, and the studies are predominantly descriptive.

The authors studied the incidence of catheter related infection in 24 central venous catheter at the Departamento de Cirurgia da Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Santa Casa de São Paulo. Skin and blood cultures were done in the first and fifth days and when the catheter were discharged. There were correlation between skin and catheter cultures in 33%. The results suggest that the skin flora is an important source of catheter related infection.

Starting from an exposition of the concept of production of knowledge in nursing, the evolution of research is reported on the basis of organized meetings and of analyses by research nurses who devote themselves to the question. The present status of investigation is presented, and the perspectives of development of nursing research in Brazil are outlined.
