The objective of this research was to evaluate the porcelain-alloy bonding strength using a local-made alloy under different times of pre-oxidation with a ceramic system. The test used was preconized by CHIODI NETTO. The results lead to the following conclusions: the control group (no pre-oxidation) showed the best values, statistically significant, when compared with others groups. The different times of pre-oxidation procedures reduced the values significantly, and the groups were similar to each other. The group submitted to the sandblasting process after a pre-oxidation of 5 minutes, showed similar values when compared with the other groups treated with pre-oxidation without sandblasting.

Our in vitro research investigated the effects of three different corrosion periods on the tensile bond strength between amalgam and composite resin discs bonded with Scotchbond Multi Purpose adhesive. The discs were fabricated using a baquelite cilinder matrix. The exposed surface was treated with a 600 grit jig paper. The amalgam discs were bonded to composite resin discs at three different periods of storage: Group 1, immediately after condensation; Group 2, after one week of storage in artificial saliva; Group 3, after one month of storage in artificial saliva. The results were examined by ANOVA and Tukey test in 5%. There was no statistically significant difference between groups 1 and 2. Group 3 showed statistically significant greater bond strength than the other groups.

Nowadays there are several types of restorative materials with fluoride release properties. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze the fluoride release from the following restorative materials, considering their different compositions. The materials used were: Chelon Fil-ESPE (CHE), Vitremer-3M (VIT), Variglass-DENTSPLY (VAR), Dyract-DENTSPLY (DYR) and Tetric-VIVADENT (TET). Six cylindrical samples (area = 1.65 cm2) of each material were prepared; each sample was then suspended individually in a plastic tube containing 2.0 mL of deionized water. The water was changed daily during 15 days. Fluoride release was determined after buffering the solution with an equal volume of TISABII. For the fluoride analysis, a fluoride electrode, Orion 96-09, and an ionalyser Orion EA 940 were used. All materials showed the same pattern of fluoride release during the 15-day experiment; the greatest fluoride release occurred during the first days and then it decreased rapidly toward a constant level. The fluoride released (mean ± standard error) in mg F/cm2 were: CHE = 7.62 ± 0.73A, VIT = 5.91 ± 0.79B, VAR = 2.72 ± 0.25C, DYR = 1.50 ± 0.17D, TE = 0.136 ± 0.016E. Means followed by different letters were significant (5%). The results showed that the composition of restorative materials influenced significantly the fluoride release.

The prevalence of mutans streptococci (MS) was evaluated in samples of unstimulated saliva from 142 12-31-month-old children. Initial and manifest caries of all teeth surfaces were recorded. Mutans streptococci were detected in 80.3% (n = 114) of the studied children, and 21.8% of all children (n = 31) presented high levels of these microorganisms. The salivary levels of mutans streptococci depended on the number of erupted teeth (c2 = 19.03; p < 0.001). There was a positive association between the number of caries affected children and the salivary levels of MS (c2 = 28.67; p < 0.001). In addition, there was a positive correlation between the salivary levels of these microorganisms and the number of caries lesions which was higher when initial caries were considered (r = 0.537; p < 0.001). These data show a high prevalence of mutans streptococci in children with 12 to 31 months of age and its positive association with the frequency and severity of dental caries.

Smoking is one of the most relevant risk factors for many diseases, including periodontal diseases. These periodontal pathologies result from the action of host defenses and from microbial virulence factors on a susceptible host. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of periodontopathogens in healthy individuals and in patients with periodontal disease. Both smoking and non-smoking patients were included. The number of bacteria that produce sulfur compounds in subgengival plaque samples of smokers and non smokers with different clinical conditions was also assessed. One hundred and eighty-nine patients were clinically and radiographically examined. The sample included patients with periodontal disease and healthy individuals. Sixty subjects were selected for microbiological evaluation. The isolation of periodontopathogens was carried out according to the methodology described by SLOTS35 (1982). The identification of the isolates was performed through biochemical tests. The isolation of black pigmented Bacteroides, Fusobacterium nucleatum and hydrogen sulfide producing bacteria was similar in smokers and non-smokers and higher among periodontal patients than among healthy subjects. However, the frequency of isolation of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in smokers with no periodontal pathologies was higher than in healthy individuals who do not use tobacco.

Chemical-surgical preparation (C.S.P.) is responsible for shaping and cleaning the root canal, being these the main requirements for a correct filling procedure. Therefore, this study attempted to evaluate the change of curvature angle of simulated root canals after chemical-surgical preparation. These root canals were made in blocks of epoxy resin with curvatures of 35 degrees, and instrumented according to the serial technique of Paiva and Antoniazzi, using type-K files, Flexofile files (pre-curved and straight) and Nitiflex files. The results showed that the smallest alteration in curvature was caused by the pre-curved Flexofile files, followed by Nitiflex files and pre-curved type-K files. The root canals instrumented with straight type-K and Flexofile files showed the largest deformation in curvature. The pre-curvature of the files affects the deformation of the root canals, presenting statistically significant differences between the results obtained with straight and pre-curved Flexofile and type-K files.

This cross-sectional cephalometric study analyzed the developmental changes in the craniofacial growth in 120 patients aged 6 to 11, with unilateral cleft lip and palate. Based on 3 angular and 2 linear cephalometric analyses, obtained from the cleft group compared among themselves and with the values considered as normal to noncleft Brazilian children, we concluded that: maxilla and mandible showed a retrusion and a decrease in effective length, the maxillomandibular relationship was acceptable and positive, and the growth of the maxilla and mandible was similar in the female and male groups.

Experience in dental caries is measured by indices, DMFS being the one most frequently used. However, this index has undergone several criticisms, particularly in regard to its M-component. When 4 surfaces of an anterior tooth, or 5 surfaces of a posterior tooth are decayed, a tooth is considered lost, regardless of how much it is involved. The present study investigated if the M-component of the DMFS-index requires correction. One hundred and seventy-seven teeth extracted from 107 adult patients from the Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais were clinically and radiographically examined. When the sample was considered as a whole, the weighted mean value of carious surfaces in the extracted teeth was 3.0. The correction factor for the M-component was 3.5 for those up to 35 years of age, and 2.5 for those over 35. No gender differences were observed. Hence, it is necessary to propose a correction factor for the M-component of the DMFS-index for any population with a similar prevalence of dental caries.
