Diffuse proliferative and necrotizing trachcobronchitis, intranuclear inclusions, and pulmonary hyaline membranes were found in a 1-year-old female dachshund which was killed because of severe respiratory disease. Histologically the lesions resemble those described in adenoviral infections in calves, pigs, and man but a specific cause was not determined.

Effects of a pathogenic canine herpesvirus on established thyroid adenocarcinoma cell cultures. 致病性犬疱疹病毒对已建立的甲状腺腺癌细胞培养的影响。

The effects of a pathogenic canine herpesvirus were studied sequentially in established canine thyroid adenocarcinoma tissue culture cells. The lesions were defined as early, middle, and late manifestations of viral effects based on the time a lesion first appeared. The early phase (3 to 10 hours) consisted of nucleolar swelling followed by disruption. The nucleolar changes were characterized by loss of RNA as determined with acridine orange and segregation of the nucleolar components as demonstrated by electron microscopy. The middle phase (10 to 34 hours) was characterized by the appearance of three types of eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions. One type of inclusion appeared to transform progressively into another. The appearance of viral antigen in the nucleus as demonstrated by immunofluorescence, correlated with ultrastructural evidence of viral replication. The late phase (34 to 72 hours) was manifested by cellular degeneration and viral release into the cytoplasm.

Morphological changes caused by pressure on the spinal cord. 脊髓受压引起的形态学改变。
Pub Date : 1969-01-01 DOI: 10.1177/030098586900600405
F Wright, A C Palmer
The morphological changes in the spinal cord caused by pressure are described in a series of domestic animals of various species. Three types of lesion are distinguished: totally malacic, partially malacic, and non-malacic. In the non-malacic lesion changes are predominantly in the white matter and consist of de-myclination and hyalinisation of small vessels. The possibility that the immediate cause of such non-malacic lesions may be obstruction of venous drainage from the spinal cord is discussed.

Nineteen primary tumors of the central nervous system from dogs and 4 from cats are described. In the group of dogs, 15 were from brachycephalic breeds and 10 of these were boxers. Their tumors included 3 glioblastomas, 3 oligodendrogliomas, 3 astrocytomas, 3 ependymomas, 2 medulloblastomas, 4 meningiomas, and 1 malignant meningioma. One ependymoma and 1 meningioma were located in the spinal cord. The 4 neoplasms from cats were meningiomas.

Pathogenesis of arthritis induced in chickens by Mycoplasma gallisepticum. 鸡败菌支原体诱导鸡关节炎的发病机制。
Pub Date : 1969-01-01 DOI: 10.1177/030098586900600502
J M Lamas da Silva, H E Adler
Gross and microscopic changes of the joint, heart, and brain were studied in chickens infected intravenously with M. gallisepticum (S6 isolate). Synovitis occurred within 3 days, followed by suppurative arthritis at 7 days, and osteomyelitis 5 days later. The pathologic changes were attributed to a severe vasculitis characterized by extensive fibrinoid necrosis and endothelial swelling. Ischemic change was observed in the heart and brain as a result of the acute arteritis.

Adenocarcinomas of the intestine induced in Syrian hamsters by N-methyl-N-nitrosourea. n -甲基-n -亚硝基脲诱导叙利亚仓鼠肠腺癌。
Pub Date : 1969-01-01 DOI: 10.1177/030098586900600504
K M Herrold
The adenocarcinomas of the intestine induced in Syrian hamsters by N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (NMU) were of two histological types, superficial and intestinal. These types had distinctive characteristics regarding pattern, cytological features, secretion of mucus, and mode of growth. The histological changes induced by NMU in the mucosa of the small intestine differed from what has been described in enzootic intestinal adenocarcinoma and proliferative ileitis of Syrian hamsters. NMU produced alteration in the villous architecture and cytological change in the absorptive cells. There was marked shortening of the villi and reduced thickness of the mucosa. The villous absorptive cells were large and cuboidal with centrally placed nuclei.

Crystals in the intestinal epithelium of neonatal pigs. 新生猪肠上皮中的晶体。

Laminated crystalline structures occurred within vacuoles of absorptive intestinal cells in colostrum-fed pigs. They are believed to be bilirubin crystals formed by breakdown of ingested red blood cells, but this could not be substantiated histochemically, and they could not be produced experimentally.

Generalised amyloidosis in seven cats. 7只猫的全身性淀粉样变性。
Pub Date : 1969-01-01 DOI: 10.1177/030098586900600203
L Clark, A A Seawright
Seven casts of generalised amyloidosis in the cat, occurring in 100 consecutive cat autopsies, were studied pathologically. Tissues from 2 of the cats were further investigated using the electron microscope. None of the cats had suffered from a prolonged infection, but one had had chronic allergic dermatitis. In 6 of the 7 cats chronic hypervitaminosis A coexisted with generalised amyloidosis. It is suggested that chronic hypervitaminosis A, which causes prolonged stimulation of the reticulo-endothelial system, may have predisposed to the high incidence of generalised amyloidosis reported in this paper.

Protothecosis in a dog. 狗的原鞘病。
Pub Date : 1969-01-01 DOI: 10.1177/030098586900600404
H J Van Kruiningen, F M Garner, B Schiefer
This is the first report of a spontaneous case of protothecosis in the dog, an infection with organisms of the algal genus Prototheca. Clinically the animal had chronic bilateral iritis accompanied by glaucoma of one eye and hypotony of the other, chronic nephritis, arthritis, and bloody diarrhea. Lesions containing the algae occurred in myocardium, liver, kidneys, para-adrenal connective tissue, brain, and eyes.
