The present article deals with the fate of the Franciscan Friary of Santa Ana del Monte of Jumilla (Murcia, Spain), worship in its church, and the state of the buildings from the time of exclaustration and the subsequent confiscation dictated by the Elizabethan government in March 1836 until the moment when a certain «regular» life was resumed in this convent in 1852.

This article provides an overview of the organization of studies among the Observant and Discalced Franciscans of the former Kingdom of Murcia (Spain), both those belonging to the Observant Province of Cartagena, and those who were part of the Discalced Custody of San Pascual from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. After overcoming the early suspicions of the Observance regarding study, the Observant Province of Cartagena afforded great importance to study; Philosophy and Theology were taught in more than thirty friaries in the Province. Among those that stood out are the Immaculate Conception College, located in the city of Murcia, where the most suitable religious graduated to obtain the degree of lectors or professors of the houses of studies, and the Missionary College located at Cehegín, which was designated for training preachers and missionaries. The friars of the Province of Cartagena opened schools for the education of lay people in several of their convents. Finally, this article presents the organization of studies in the Discalced Custody of Saint Paschal of Murcia, where Saint Joachim’s College at Cieza stood out by being dedicated to train missionaries.

This historical research tries to analyze the influence exerted by Saint Peter of Alcantara among the peninsular nobility in the middle of the 16th century. The founder of the province of Saint Joseph of the Discalced Franciscans, ate at the table of many men and women of the aristocracy of Extremadura. At the beginning of the 17th century, when transferred to the Court of Philip III, they accurately remembered those shared meals in their ancestral homes and the devotion professed by their parents, who acted as hosts. In 1616 and 1618, some testified in the cause for his canonization. In them, the image of Saint Peter remained very much alive, the austerity of his life, the poverty of his clothes, the frugality of his meals, the fleeting nature of his sleep. In some cases, the fame of sanctity and miracles of the penitent reached other noble houses in Madrid. In their need, they also entrusted themselves, trusting in his intercession, as they indicated in the testimonial evidence of the canonical investigation.

This article, published in three parts, outlines the influence of some opuscula by Peire Olieu OFM (Tractatulus de septem tentationibus, Remedia contra temptationes spirituales and Informatio Petri Iohannis) on the works of Francesc Eiximenis OFM. The editions of the Catalan translations are also published: Set maneres de temptacions, Remeys contra algunes temptacions qui deuenésser esperituals en lo temps de Antechrist and Devotes consideracions e motius per los quals ve hom en major conexença de Déu. In this first part, the Eiximenian adaptation of the De septem tentationibus in the Segon del Crestià (chapters 131-142) is studied.

By comparing the experiences of diverse friars from Franciscan provinces and colleges in New Spain’s and Mexico’s Northwestern regions, this article offers an overview of the participation of those friars in the insurgency and culmination of the proclamation of Mexico’s Independence. The analysis focuses on the Franciscans’ institutional positions concerning such matters, while also considering some examples of individual opinions expressing either support or condemnation of the insurgency. In a similar vein, attention is paid to the support or criticism of the political movements led by Hidalgo and Iturbide. This article aims to show the complexity in the array of oral or written responses (sermons, historical essays) articulated by Franciscan friars from distinct personal backgrounds and contexts with respect to the insurgency, the counterinsurgency, and the diverse forms of celebrating the independence of Mexico. Thus, the article adheres to current perspectives that underline the myriad of voices and interpretations related to the political construct of nineteenth-century Mexico, especially those coexisting within the Franciscan communities.

The College of San Buenaventura in Murcia is intimately linked to the history of the aforesaid city and the Capuchin Order. The Capuchin friars, when they arrived from Totana to the capital, engaged the main political and religious figures of the 1940s and 1950s in the foundation of an institution that would guide the youth of Murcia with Franciscan rigor. Through the study of archival sources, some manuals and the principal Capuchin publications and bulletins from the middle of the twentieth century, it is possible to ascertain the vicissitudes suffered by the religious in the erection and consolidation of an educational center, which in a very few years managed to increase exponentially the number of students who entered and to maintain itself as a school of reference in the educational panorama of Murcia.

This article describes the contents of the manuscript Salamanca, Biblioteca General Histórica de la Universidad, 2691, which preserves a collection of mostly unpublished texts taken from two encyclopaedic compilations by Juan Gil of Zamora (OFM) († c. 1318): the Historia naturalis, canonica et ciuilis and the Liber illustrium personarum. In addition, it notes the sources used by the Franciscan writer, some already known, such as the Chronicon mundi by Lucas de Tuy, the Historia de rebus Hispanie by Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, the Legenda aurea by Jacobus of Voragine or the stories gathered in the so-called Hispanic Passionary, but others noted for the first time, such as the Rationale diuinorum officiorum by Guillaume Durand the Speculator and the Translatio s. Nicolai Barium an. 1087 by John of Bari. This article also studies the different versions of the same works in the remaining writings of Juan Gil of Zamora indicating whether they have been preserved or lost. Finally, in an Appendix, it offers the editio princeps of a hymn and a prayer composed by the Zamoran friar in honour of the guardian angels.
