: The strategies employed by octopuses for predator avoidance and escape, which are adapted to their structurally simple habitat, have been the subject of much research. In the pres-ent study, the shapes and structural characteristics of Octopus minor’s burrows were investigated and the burrowing behavior was also observed to reveal the dynamics of burrow formation. From 2012 to 2017, 85 plasticized cement burrow models were measured. The burrow, a complex project, includes 7 interconnected structural parts: digging holes (DH), digging channel (DC), horizontal channel (HC), lounge (LG), breathing channel (BC), breathing holes (BH), and breathing hole heap (BHH), with each part having its own cross-sections of special shape and size. The diameters of all parts were very significantly different and had extremely significant correlations with other factors, except for the weight of the occupants. The burrows have 1−2 DHs, 1−4 BHs and 1 BHH, with DHs and BHs distributed at opposite ends of the burrow. The burrows were categorized into 7 types according to the number of DHs, and burrows with 2 BHs accounted for a distinct type. The diameters of LG, DC and HC and the occupants’ weight decreased as the number of BHs increased. The process of excavating a burrow involved 5 steps: creating a DH, inserting arms into the DH, burrowing, excavating the BC, and creating the LG. Abandoned burrows could be reoccupied by other octopuses, regardless of whether they were larger or smaller than the previous occupants. As an adaptation to structurally simple environment, O. minor seems to use a particular skill in digging more complex burrows as shelters.

Otolith microchemistry provides valuable information about the environmental history of individual fish, but few studies have considered the influence of population or stock on life history traits. This study used the Sr/Ca ratio as an index of habitat use of spinyhead croaker Collichthys lucidus from 2 different populations (northern and southern China populations), including lifetime otolith microchemistry profiles (n = 63 fish) and determinations of natal habitat selection (n = 352 fish). The otolith data revealed 3 life history patterns in C. lucidus: Pattern 1 individuals spent most of their lifetime (>95%) in mesohaline waters (Sr/Ca range: 3-7 mmol mol-1), particularly during early growth; Pattern 2 individuals migrated from hyperhaline waters (Sr/Ca ≥ 7 mmol mol-1) to mesohaline waters; and Pattern 3 individuals migrated from oligohaline waters (Sr/Ca < 3 mmol mol-1) to mesohaline waters. Pattern 2 and Pattern 3 were specific to the northern and southern China populations, respectively, and Pattern 1 was shared by the 2 populations. The otolith core Sr/Ca ratios showed that most C. lucidus selected mesohaline waters as their natal habitat (i.e. 90.6% of 352 total individuals); 12.5% (19 of 152) selected hyperhaline waters and fell within the northern China population, and 7% (14 of 200) selected oligohaline waters and fell within the southern China population. These results indicate that life history diversity exists in this species, as the pattern of habitat use largely differed between the northern and southern China populations. The overall findings highlight that the behavior of different populations should be considered when determining fish migration histories.

Feeding dynamics of the invasive calanoid copepod, Pseudodiaptomus inopinus, in two northeast Pacific estuaries

: The Asian calanoid copepod Pseudodiaptomus inopinus , first observed in the Columbia River Estuary in the early 1990s, has since become the dominant copepod species in many estuaries along the US Pacific coast, but its feeding behavior has not been previously studied. In October 2019 and 2020, when P. inopinus was at peak seasonal abundance, we conducted incubation experiments with this species feeding on natural microplankton prey assemblages sampled from 2 invaded estuaries: the Chehalis River estuary, Washington, and the Yaquina River estuary, Oregon. In both estuaries, diatoms were the most numerically abundant prey group, with 11− 15 μm Chaetoceros sp. and 21−25 μm Cyclotella sp. dominating the Chehalis and Yaquina estuaries, respectively. Diatom and ciliate biomass were highest in both estuaries, with all prey cells in the Yaquina estuary typically larger than those in the Chehalis estuary. P. inopinus fed omnivorously on microplankton prey, with a preference for prey >20 μm and occasional avoidance of cyanobacteria and cells <10 μm. Ingestion rates were highest on ciliates and diatoms. The omnivory of P. inopinus may contribute to its success as an invader in northeast Pacific estuaries.
