Some European folk music being performed in the North America remains substantially true to authentic versions brought over by early immigrants. Musicologists have combed the countryside of North America in search of such music, which in some cases, has been better preserved here than in its country of origin. Occasionally, music forms that have “morphed” have been restored by dedicated individuals who were generations removed from initial arrival of the music. Clete (Cletus) Bellin is an example of such a dedicated individual.

Slovenia is the first of the recent Accession countries to the EU to adopt the Euro as its currency. Its location at the top of the Balkan line and just under Austria and Italy makes it psychologically advantageous as a bridge for commercial and financial entry to other Balkan nations. Advances in Slovenia’s steps to integration with the EU and other international organizations can be a model for further EU expansion and other current Accession countries in the process of adopting EU policies.

I will demonstrate these effects with examples from a range of fictional works, and will also discuss some of the possible reasons for the strength of the rule, such as whether norms of good writing taught in schools and style manuals differ between Slovene and English-speaking cultures. Another possible reason is the important role of text editors in Slovene publishing, since they often seem to be more stylistically conservative than translators.
