In the mid-nineteenth century photographers were challenged by the absence of light in indoor and underground spaces. One promising solution was the intense light created by the combustion of magnesium, which became commercially available in England in 1864. This article examines the use of magnesium wire by the pioneer Canadian photographer Charles Smeaton, who took the first pictures in the Roman catacombs in the winter of 1866-1867.

The Global Repercussions of the 1947 Symposium on Fish Populations in Toronto: Scientific Networks and the Over-fishing Question 1947年多伦多鱼类种群专题讨论会的全球影响:科学网络和过度捕捞问题

A relatively small, contentious, and long-forgotten meeting, the 1947 Symposium on Fish Populations, had enormous and decades-long repercussions for global fisheries policies. Convened in Toronto by Archibald Gowanlock Huntsman, former director of the Atlantic Biological Station, it drew together leading North American fisheries biologists and professional fishermen. By exposing the lack of agreement on, or understanding of, the nature of overfishing, this meeting made it difficult for later scientists to challenge pro-industry fisheries policies. The published proceedings, in-demand by a tight network of fisheries scientists across North America and the North Atlantic, guaranteed this meeting’s disproportionate and unfortunate impact.

Tools for Rational Development: The Canada Land Inventory and the Canada Geographic Information System in Mid-twentieth century Canada 理性发展的工具:二十世纪中叶加拿大土地清单和地理信息系统

From the 1960s through the 1980s, Canadian scientists, resource managers, and computer experts collaborated on two linked undertakings: the Canada Land Inventory (CLI) and the Canada Geographic Information System. CLI was an extensive project that assessed the state of key resources across much of the country, while CGIS was a pioneering effort at computerizing CLI data to support decision-making about resource use. Fundamental components of the Agricultural Rehabilitation and Development Act, CLI and CGIS reflect Canadian innovation in new information-management tools designed to facilitate state goals. This paper examines the production and affordances of CLI and CGIS, and considers the renewed optimism and collaborative relationships that emerged from them. It also examines historical concerns over the limitations of these technologies and explores how CLI and CGIS were oriented to change over space, not time. Ultimately, these technological innovations served to naturalize patterns of inequality and normalize urban-industrial modernity.

‘One-Day-Wide’ Canada: History, Geography, and Aerial Views at Trans Canada Air Lines, 1945-1955 “一日之旅”加拿大:历史、地理和横跨加拿大航空公司的鸟瞰图,1945-1955

This article shows how Trans Canada Air Lines (now Air Canada) navigated celebrating Canada’s geography while eliminating it using modern communications technologies in its midcentury public-facing material. TCA worked explicitly with modern and high-modern discourse of “space” and “time,” manipulating the historical and geographic imaginary to position itself as a natural part of the Canadian envirotechnical landscape. In so doing, TCA also self-fashioned as the gatekeeper of geographic experiences in the form of aerial views. By embracing a new technological system—aviation—and a new type of environment—the geographic imaginary—this article pushes the boundaries of envirotech and argues that the Canadian tendency towards both geographic and technological nationalism is, at its center, an envirotechnical relationship.

Hydro Democracy: Water Power and Political Power in Ontario 水力民主:安大略省的水力和政治权力

Drawing on Timothy Mitchell’s Carbon Democracy, and using envirotechnical analysis, we probe how the materiality of energy—public hydropower—influenced democracy and governance in Ontario during the early twentieth century. Within Canada, hydro-electricity disproportionately shaped the politics of Ontario and Canada-US relations during the first half of the century. Within the province, it provided the energy-based affluence that underpinned claims for a liberal and democratic society. But residents experienced the consequences of hydropower unevenly. Urban and industrial residents enjoyed most of the benefits, while rural residents and Indigenous peoples living close to hydro developments endured the burdens of development.

In the sociology of professions, working with machines is often seen as an obstacle to professional aspirations. This is especially true in healthcare, where a sharp distinction between professionals and technicians has prevailed since the early 20th century. However, only a few studies have documented the meaning of machines and technical skills for healthcare technicians. The purpose of this article is to show how and why two groups of such technicians, hearing prosthetists and respiratory technicians, actually tried to reconcile the use of machines with professionalization projects. It concludes with considerations about what these stories tell us about the history of technical work, about the transformations of the healthcare work environment in the second half of 20th century, and about the place of technical skills in the system of professions.

The art of taking care of the insane developed and solidified at the Hospital Saint-Jean-de-Dieu after a School of Nurses was created there in 1912. Founded by the Sisters of Providence, this new school participated in the transformation of the asylum into a regular hospital. The archives of the Sisters of Providence and the monthly magazine La garde-malade canadienne-française allow us to analyze the discourse of nursing leaders, which was based on the importance of professional training. Scientific discoveries and new technologies were at the heart of the care process at Saint-Jean-de-Dieu, where students were introduced to a technical, as well as a spiritual, education. This article first considers the marginal status of psychiatric nursing training within the larger nurses' professionalization movement. In a second step, it describes the socio-religious context between 1912 and 1962 within which the School of Nurses of the Hospital Saint-Jean-de-Dieu evolved.

Envisioning cyclopropane: scientific product or medical technology? 展望环丙烷:科学产品还是医疗技术?

In the late 1920s, V.E. Henderson and his team at the University of Toronto discovered the anaesthetic properties of cyclopropane. For a number of reasons, Henderson did not envision cyclopropane as a useful technology: to him it was simply a gas that possessed anaesthetic properties, rather than a potential clinical product, and this explains why cyclopropane was not first introduced into Toronto hospitals. In contrast, the practicing anaesthesiologist Ralph M. Waters envisioned cyclopropane as a medical technology, partly because it could assist his effort to professionalize anaesthesiology in the 1930s. This paper argues that it is useful to make a historically-informed distinction between cyclopropane the experimental laboratory gas and cyclopropane the medical anaesthetic because such a distinction highlights the social dimensions of the process of scientific discovery and helps illuminate the relationship between scientific production and medical technology.

In the sociology of professions, working with machines is often seen as an obstacle to professional aspirations. This is especially true in healthcare, where a sharp distinction between professionals and technicians has prevailed since the early 20th century. However, only a few studies have documented the meaning of machines and technical skills for healthcare technicians. The purpose of this article is to show how and why two groups of such technicians, hearing prosthetists and respiratory technicians, actually tried to reconcile the use of machines with professionalization projects. It concludes with considerations about what these stories tell us about the history of technical work, about the transformations of the healthcare work environment in the second half of 20th century, and about the place of technical skills in the system of professions.

Exploring Greenland: science and technology in Cold War settings. 探索格陵兰:冷战背景下的科学技术。

This paper explores a vacant spot in the Cold War history of science: the development of research activities in the physical environmental sciences and in nuclear science and technology in Greenland. In the post-war period, scientific exploration of the polar areas became a strategically important element in American and Soviet defence policy. Particularly geophysical fields like meteorology, geology, seismology, oceanography, and others profited greatly from military interest. While Denmark maintained formal sovereignty over Greenland, research activities were strongly dominated by U.S. military interests. This paper sets out to summarize the limited current state of knowledge about activities in the environmental physical sciences in Greenland and their entanglement with military, geopolitical, and colonial interests of both the USA and Denmark. We describe geophysical research in the Cold War in Greenland as a multidimensional colonial endeavour. In a period of decolonization after World War II, Greenland, being a Danish colony, became additionally colonized by the American military. Concurrently, in a period of emerging scientific internationalism, the U.S. military "colonized" geophysical research in the Arctic, which increasingly became subject to military directions, culture, and rules.
