A review of traditional migration patterns in Southeast Asia is presented, with particular consideration given to the migration of those of Indian or Chinese origin. The author notes that although international migration by Indians and Chinese has decreased since most countries in the region obtained independence, movements of indigenous peoples remain significant. It is suggested that any analysis of migration must take ethnic differences into account. Topics considered in this analysis include movement toward frontiers, the creation of branch villages, long-distance migration, ethnic separation of migrants, circular migration, and age and sex composition of migrants.

The author applies Auerbach and Zipf's rank-size rule for the population of cities to data for the nine regions of Japan for 1960, 1965, 1970, and 1975. The rule is successfully applied, and the author concludes that "the system of population of cities in Japan was so homogeneous that the distribution of the population in cities in each of the regions of this country could be described by this same rank-size rule." Some theoretical considerations concerning the rank-size rule are also discussed. (summary in JPN)
