The authors apply the Butz-Ward version of the new home economics model of fertility to Japan, using annual time-series data for 1963-1984. This model postulates that "both men's and women's current wages operate independently in explaining fertility movements in the United States." Some of the theoretical and technical problems with this model are discussed. The authors then propose five alternative specifications to the Butz-Ward model and test the applicability of each specification to Japan (SUMMARY IN JPN)

The authors present cohort mortality rates for Japan by five-year age interval for all causes of death and for malignant neoplasms, cerebrovascular disease, and heart disease. The calculations are based on vital statistics data for 1947-1982 and period and cohort life tables for 1891-1982 published by Zenjo Nanjo and Kazumasa Kobayashi. "Ratios of individual cause to all causes in each age were calculated and applied to [a] mortality matrix derived from Nanjo-Kobayashi's life tables. Age-specific period and cohort mortality rates for each cause were calculated from [the] cause-specific mortality matrix.... Trends and age patterns of cohort mortalities and ratios of mortalities in successive cohort and age group were investigated." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

The author reviews research supporting and opposing the Malthusian view that the effect of population growth on per capita income in Japan has been negative. Distinguishing between total population growth and the growth of the labor force, the author finds that "over the total period (1880-1970) population cum labor growth on average tended to make a positive contribution to per capita income growth." The author first examines two measurements of the marriage squeeze, namely, the sex ratio measure developed by Akers, Heer, and Grossbard-Schechtman and the S measure constructed by Schoen. Using these measures, Japanese data for the years 1950 to 1980 are analyzed, showing a marriage squeeze for females in the first two decades and for males in the 1970s. Explanations for these findings are suggested, and the relative merits of the two methods are considered. (summary in JPN)

The concentration of population in urban areas in Japan and changes in the proportion of urban population to total population are quantitatively analyzed for the country as a whole and for regions within the country. Using official statistics for the years 1920-1980 to construct logistic curves, the authors note similarities between the curves depicting nationwide changes and those describing regional changes.
