Introduction Beekeeping is an important agricultural activity that encompasses production and marketing of bee products, sanity and welfare of honey bees (Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758), and the pollination favor and increase of various botanical species. Data indicate that 76% of food products produced in Europe depend on bees pollination, with an estimated economic value of 14.2 million Euros (Rossi, 2017). However, in recent years scientists and beekeepers have warned about the decline of bees, colony losses, and the decrease of pollinators in nature, especially in environmental agroecosystems. Possible causes for this decline could include intensive agriculture and monoculture, use of pesticides, climate changes, habitat losses, and diseases.

Tigray War Put Honey Bees in Peril

Why Beekeeping? It is well known that honey bees are essential to human existence not only through their direct products such as honey and beeswax, but also through pollination services. Worldwide, the value of this insect species, as the second most economically important livestock, is estimated over US$180 billion annually (Jacobs et al., 2006; Porto et al., 2020). In Ethiopia, small-scale beekeeping has a long history and been practiced in almost all regions of the country. In Tigray, beekeeping is one of the most important income-generating agricultural activities, supporting poverty alleviation efforts and creating employment opportunities for many people in rural and urban areas. According to the regional emergency response plan (BoARD, 2021), there are over 58,000 beekeepers in Tigray, who generate income from the sale of honey, beeswax and bee colonies, which cover various expenses such as school fees for their children. Beehive products such as honey also greatly contribute to food and nutrition security and medical care in the local communities.

Propolis as a Therapeutic Alternative Against Oral Candidiasis: A Systematic Review

Introduction The word Candida goes back to the traditional white robes worn by Roman candidates (candidatus) running for public office. The term albicans is derived from another Latin word albico/albicatus, meaning “to be white” or “bordering on white.” Basically, the term Candida albicans is redundant and means “to be white” (Hellstein & Marek, 2019). Candida species are part of the normal microbiota of healthy people. There are about 200 species, of which only 10% are considered etiologic agents. They live as commensals but are opportunistic microorganisms. People with weakened immune systems tend to have aggressive manifestations. Several factors contribute to fungal infections, including: Disruption of skin and mucosal barriers, neutrophil dysfunction, disruption of cell-mediated immunity, metabolic disorders, long-term treatment with antibiotics, chemotherapy, transplantation, resistance to antifungal drugs, and others (Pfaller & Diekema, 2007).

At the beginning of 2022, the International Bee Research Association (IBRA) donated its Historical Collection to the Eva Crane Trust (ECT). It covers numerous objects related to beekeeping that Dr Eva Crane collected during her many travels in the post-war period. In this way, the collection is now under the management of the charity that bears the name of the person who collected the objects. In recent decades, the historical collection has roamed around numerous Flemish institutions under the impulse of Emeritus Professor Octaaf Van Laere, always with the good intention of taking care of this heritage. In the last period from 2014–2022, the collection was housed in the beekeeping museum in Kalmthout, where a small part of the collection was also exhibited. Due to renovation works in Kalmthout, the collection had to be stored elsewhere by May 2022.

Introduction The small hive beetle (SHB), Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), is a parasite and scavenger of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies endemic to sub-Saharan Africa (Hepburn & Radloff, 1998). It has become an invasive species with well-established populations in North America and Australia (Neumann & Ellis, 2008). In 1996, SHBs were discovered in colonies of European subspecies of honey bees in the southeastern USA (Elzen et al., 1999). SHBs cause considerable economic damage to apiculture in the USA (Hood, 2004; Neumann & Elzen, 2004) and Australia (Spiewok et al., 2007).

An Overview of Selection Concepts Applied to Honey Bees
Pub Date : 2023-01-02 DOI: 10.1080/0005772X.2022.2147702

Introduction For beekeepers it is often difficult to empirically estimate the impact of genetics and selection on honey bee performance. This difficulty—encountered by all breeders of domesticated species—is even greater in the case of honey bees, due to their complex biology and reproduction. Thus, beekeepers can be divided into enthusiasts and sceptics: the former rely primarily on selective breeding as means of improving honey bee performance, while the latter prefer to use other levers for achieving their aims. To support beekeepers to distinguish between the improvements that can be achieved in honey bee performance through selection and those that can be achieved through animal husbandry approaches (e.g., colony management and treatments), a summary of useful concepts in honey bee genetics and their use in breeding is presented and illustrated by the example of two Swiss honey bee populations.
