The author takes us on a journey from the founding of Kyiv in the 5th century to the independence of modern Ukraine, through revolutions and crises, Russia's aggression in 2014, and up to the full-scale invasion in February 2022. He explains in a meritorious way what distinguishes Ukraine from Russia and how the Ukrainians, despite a much smaller population and fewer military and economic resources, have managed to resist the Russian aggression in a way that has aroused both the admiration and sympathy of the outside world.

Tross tittelen får leseren likevel forbausende lite dybdeinnsikt i Russlands informasjonskrigføring gjennom sosiale medier. Putin’s Trolls is a watershed portrayal of Russia’s increasingly complex information war, and the attacks against the people fighting back. The book’s strength lies in situating pro-Russian influence efforts in specific national contexts — such as the Nordic ones. Despite the title, the reader nevertheless gains surprisingly little in-dept insight into Russia’s weaponization of social media.

Legacies of the Komsomol is an article-based PhD on how two national chapters of the all-Soviet communist youth league Komsomol transformed during the years before and after the Soviet collapse. It also discusses how Komsomol’s offspring organizations became integrated parts of the political regimes of Putin and Lukashenko, and the youth’s motivation for participating in them.

Abstract: Russian surrogacy and the moral panics around ‘single men’According to the ‘Anti-propaganda law’, the Russian state seeks to shield minors against ‘non-traditional sexual relations’. Despite this state-sanctioned intolerance, analysis reveals, that the webpages of many Russian surrogacy providers employ marketing strategies prominently featuring ‘single men’ – often used as a euphemism for gay men within the context of surrogacy. Nowhere else is the child-figure invoked in such (conceptual) proximity to the queer. The criminal case against surrogacy practitioners initiated in July 2020 exemplifies the tension that de-facto gay-inclusive surrogacy generates with respect to the official position of the Russian state. Drawing on the concept of homocapitalism (Rao, 2020), which offers a theoretical frame to account for the political effects of how neoliberal global free-market capitalism leverages the case for LGBTQ rights, this article inquires more deeply into this tension, asking: In what ways do surrogacy providers in Russia help to fuel moral panics with respect to the queer? What values and discourses do they appeal to when advertising their services to ‘single men’ on their websites? How do such agencies stand in conflict with respect to Russia’s current biopolitical project with its focus on ‘traditional family values’?

Has the USA become part of the problem, rather than the solution, regarding Norway’s security challenges in the North? This is the question posed by Tormod Heier. However, many of his arguments may seem dated after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The consequences of the dearth of efforts at transitional justice with regard to Stalin-era repressions affect Russia more than ever. The editors of The Gulag in Writings of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Varlam Shalamov note this circumstance, and the gradual rehabilitation of Stalin in today’s Russia, as important reasons for renewed research efforts regarding the two classics authors of Gulag literature, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Varlam Shalamov.
