The Attitudes toward Women Inventory (AWI) was developed in a group of Dutch violent forensic psychiatric inpatients to assess antisocial attitudes toward women. The internal consistency, inter-rater reliability, and test-retest reliability of the instrument with 12 items were good. Negative attitudes toward women appeared to be negatively related to agreeableness and positively related to hostility and verbal aggression. A comparison with a non-clinical reference group yielded no difference in AWI total score, but the patients scored significantly higher on two sexual aggression items. Further studies on its psychometric properties in larger offender and non-clinical populations are needed.

The study explored the personal narratives of Mentally Disordered Offenders (MDOs) and the impact various mental disorders had on the structure of the offenders’ criminal narratives. Seventy adult male offenders who were sectioned under the United Kingdom’s Mental Health Act 2007 were recruited for the study. Participants were provided with a 36 item Criminal Narrative Role Questionnaire. Smallest Space Analysis found four criminal narrative themes (Victim, Revenger, Hero, Professional), which indicated clear distinctions in the narrative experience of MDOs. The major differences were found to be related to the vulnerability of the offender’s mental disorder.

The objective was to determine the efficacy of the victim-offender mediation (VOM) procedure in addressing recidivism. Altogether, 210 juvenile offenders (14–18 years old) participated in four different types of educational interventions: VOM as a diversion procedure, and case closure, reprimand, and community service as dispositions. Results showed the lack of any clear differences in recidivism rates between victim-offender mediation and the rest of the groups. An increase of the rate of recidivism could be observed in VOM at 12 months and in case closure at 24 months, as level of risk increases.

The aim of the study was to assess whether the patients' personality traits may predict the length of current detention. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted in 56 male forensic in-patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Patients were assessed by means of the Temperament and Character Inventory and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Regression analysis has suggested that the character dimension, cooperativeness, and the type of offense were predictors of duration of current detention. Results suggest that information about the patients’ personalities may be helpful in better understanding and/or predicting the patients’ behaviors.

In light of the growing number of youth violence instruments at a clinician’s disposal, this study sought to investigate the interchangeability of two widely validated adolescent violence risk instruments. The concurrent and incremental validity of the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY) and the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS/CMI) were evaluated in a young Australian custodial population. A significant degree of dimensional construct overlap between instruments was discovered. Both measures were similarly found to be moderately predictive of general and violent recidivism. Findings indicate that the instruments are potentially substitutable when used to evaluate future violence in these settings. Clinical implications for risk assessment practice are discussed.

This archival study explored the impact of performance on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a brief cognitive screen performed as part of a mental status examination (MSE), on adjudicative competency opinions provided for 194 criminal defendants, in examinations that did not include a competency-specific instrument. The MoCA’s suggested cutoff of 26 as indicative of “mild cognitive impairment” was not determinative of examiners’ conclusions regarding competency-related capacities. However, when scores were considered dimensionally, MoCA performance during the MSE accounted for additional significant variance in examiners’ competency opinions, when added to a logistic regression model containing age and presence of psychotic symptoms.

It was hypothesized that clinical judges would make ineffective use of base rate information and that their level of experience in the forensic psychology field or with risk assessment would have no bearing on their ability to make accurate clinical judgments. A convenience sample of 43 members of two professional psychological organizations was used to determine the effects of base rates and experience on predictions made from a “blind” analysis of the Historical, Clinical, Risk-20 (HCR-20). Consistent with the hypotheses, base rate neglect was prevalent in the current study and prior experience had no effect on predictive accuracy.

Challenges to Restoring Juvenile Competence with Involuntary Medications

Administering involuntary medications to minors to restore competence to stand trial is a decision highlighting the ambiguities of current legal standards and evolving clinical practice. Overriding the objections of incompetent youth requires the application of case law associated with the state’s interests in prosecuting adults, which may not address how the potential side effects of antipsychotic medications impact adolescent development. Parents’ investment in their children’s wellbeing is not formally recognized in such situations; however, parental consent may be given weight by the juvenile court. The two cases presented here describe how conflicts arising from legal and clinical contingencies were resolved.

This study explored the Behavior Assessment System for Children Second Edition Self Report of Personality-Adolescent (BASC-2-SRP-A) and the Child Report of Post-traumatic Stress (CROPS) profiles of a sample of adjudicated youth. Results were consistent with previous research, indicating that 56% of CROPS scores fell within the clinically significant range. Cronbach’s alpha indicated good internal consistency of the 26-item CROPS. In addition, Anxiety was found to contribute most to distinguishing between the clinically significant and clinically non-significant CROPS groups, followed by the Social Stress and Somatization subscales. Gender differences, implications, and future directions are discussed.
