Healthcare delivery modeled on productivity and efficiency can lead to physical injury and burnout. Physical injuries among surgeons in the operating room are common, underreported, and largely preventable. Greater attention to ergonomics is important, as is a collaborative effort between surgeons and healthcare organizations to provide education and to modify work environments and instruments to prevent these injuries from occurring in the first place.

Organizational culture is underleveraged in most organizations, including healthcare. During their recruitment, aspiring physician leaders should note the culture and determine whether it is a good fit with their own values. Upon arrival, they should model their values and desired behaviors in an effort to modify or re-build what they deem an unhealthy culture. This involves observations of behavior and feedback loops over time.

The Catholic hierarchy and lines of authority begin with the pope, extend to the bishops, and then to the priests. Fundamental to Catholicism is the belief in a line of spiritual authority that Jesus gave to the apostle Peter and to every pope throughout the millennia. The bishops and archbishops are appointed by the pope and oversee areas of various sizes called dioceses and archdioceses. Priests lead the parishes. The cardinals — the men at Vatican events dressed in red — serve as advisors to the pope, administrators of Vatican areas, and most importantly, are the papal electors.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to medical situations can come in several forms. The most widely recognized is due to illness and accident. Less recognized and less easily understood is the PTSD that can occur due to medical treatment, regardless of whether that treatment was done well and correctly. Clinicians can take a few basic steps to respond professionally and compassionately to a treatment-traumatized patient’s needs.
