Sweet’s syndrome is a rare inflammatory condition characterized by the presence of neutrophilic infiltrate of the skin. We describe a case of severe anemia and neutrophilia with post-mortem findings resembling Sweet's syndrome in a five-years-old female Labrador Retriever with bilateral epistaxis, hematemesis, hyporexia, pale oral mucosa, and fever. Laboratory analysis evidenced severe unresponsive anemia, thrombocytopenia, and leukocytosis. Biochemistry showed hypoalbuminemia and increased ALT and SAP activities. The patient was transfused and received doxycycline and prednisone for one week without improvement. Two further blood transfusions were administered. Bone marrow analysis showed a mild erythroid hypoplasia, granulocytic hyperplasia, myeloid to erythroid ratio of 6.01:1 (reference: 0.9:1 – 1.76:1) without dysplasia, mild megakaryocytic hyperplasia, and increased iron stores. Macrophages were slightly increased in number with erythrophagocytosis, and immune-mediated anemia was considered. Immunosuppressive treatment was prescribed to reduce red blood cell destruction, but no improvement after one week was observed, and euthanasia was performed. Necroscopic findings resembled those described for the systemic form of Sweet's Syndrome. Bone marrow histopathology showed remarkably increased granulopoiesis and destruction of platelets and erythrocytes. Sweet's syndrome is frequently associated with hematologic malignancy or drug exposure. Leukemia was excluded after bone marrow analysis because no increase in blast population was seen as well as no signs of dysplasia. Previous treatment could be related to the development of Sweet's syndrome, which might be the primary event. Although rare, this syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis of dermatosis and leukocytosis when infectious agents are not identified.

The decline of amphibian populations concerns scientists worldwide and has been related to the spreading infectious diseases, among other environmental factors. Acute mass mortality with hemorrhagic and necrotic lesions has been described and associated with wild amphibian viruses. These diseases were first recorded in Central America and Australia in the early 1990s and later in Brazilian Atlantic Forest fragments. Epizootiological data on these infections must be included in other Brazilian phytogeographic regions and domains. This work aimed to report a systemic necrotic morbid state in a native Leptodactylus vastus from an urban reserve in northeastern Brazil, describing clinical and pathological findings and discussing its importance and likely etiologies. An adult L. vastus presented an erythematous oral cavity with multifocal point-like erosions, sublingual congested vessels, oropharyngeal edema, and mild esophageal mucosal prolapse. After therapeutic protocol, the patient showed no improvement; then, he was humanely euthanized. Necropsy demonstrated moderate to marked multicentric chronic necrotizing lesions. Histopathology revealed diffuse necrotic tissues with a few intracytoplasmic amphophilic inclusions in cellular remnants, with minor hemoparasites, helminths, and bacterial granulomatous coinfections. Clinical and pathological findings suggested a major chronic viral infection with minor coinfections. In the current case, confirmation of etiology struggled with financial and logistic limitations. Future partnerships will enable definitive diagnostics. This is the first record of systemic necrotizing disease in a wild frog in Ceará state, northeastern Brazil, and it is a red flag to emerging infectious diseases surveillance in this geographic area.

Amebiasis is an important parasitosis that can affect reptiles, specially caused by protozoas of the genus Entamoeba, which include pathogenic or commensal species. Entamoeba invadens is the most common amoeba to cause serious disease and death in reptiles. This paper aims to report a case of a sudden death due to a disseminated infection by Entamoeba invadens in a red-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonaria). The animal was brought to the Center for Management and Conservation of Wild Animals of the Fauna Division and found dead after being kept in an enclousure with other captive tortoises for 11 months. Macroscopic findings evidenced necrotizing typhlitis and proctitis and round yellow areas in the right lobe of liver parenchyma. In the histological examination, necrotizing and heterophilic enteritis and necrotizing hepatitis with macrovesicular degeneration of hepatocytes, associated with mixed inflammatory infiltrate were present. Both organs revealed numerous amoebic trophozoites, morphologically suggestive of the genus Entamoeba, and bacterial colonies. The agent was confirmed by PCR and Sanger DNA sequencing, which leads this study to be the first confirmed case report of E. invadens infection in Brazil in a red-footed tortoise.

Lipoma is a benign neoplasia originating from adipocytes. It is frequently diagnosed in veterinary medicine and usually presents as cutaneous nodules but can also occur inside body cavities in less common cases. There are several reports of abdominal cavity neoplasia in horses, an important cause of colic in these animals. No cases of neoplasia in the thoracic cavity have been reported for this species. Therefore, the aim of this study was to report an intrathoracic lipoma located in the visceral pleura of an American Quarter Horse. The equine was euthanized after relapses of surgically resolved colic and unresponsive visceral pain. At necropsy, we observed fibrinous peritonitis, adherence of intestinal loops in its abdominal cavity, and hemomelasma ilei in several intestine segments. In the thoracic cavity, a whitish, firm, pendulous structure with a regular surface measuring approximately 4.0 cm x 3.0 cm was observed in the pleura of the right caudal lung lobe–and diagnosed by histopathology as lipoma. Due to the rarity of this type of lipoma presentation and considering the absence of reports of its occurrence in horses, this report is essential to list this neoplasia as a differential in pleural masses in the species.

An adult boa with acute epistaxis, without other clinical signs, was found dead in its terrarium. Macroscopic examination of the specimen revealed multiple yellow foci in the lung and liver. Microscopic findings included severe and multifocal granulomas as well as vasculitis, hemorrhages and thrombosis in liver and lungs, with the presence of intralesional Gram positive and acid-fast bacilli. PCR end point analysis and sequencing using total DNA extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of liver and lungs identified Mycobacteroides abscessus subsp massiliense and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. Mycobacteria are organisms that can affect a wide range of animals, including reptiles. In snakes, reports are rare and mycobacterial species are highly variable. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a pathogenic bacillus related to multiple organ disorders, which until now has not been reported in boas. This report describes the first case report of Mycobacteroides abscessus subsp. massiliense and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae detection in a boa.

PCR end point analysis and sequencing using total DNA extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of liver and lungs identified Mycobacteroides abscessus subsp massiliense and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. Mycobacteria are organisms that can affect a wide range of animals, including reptiles. In snakes, reports are rare and mycobacterial species are highly variable. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a pathogenic bacillus related to multiple organ disorders, which until now has not been reported in boas. This report describes the first case report of Mycobacteroides abscessus subsp. massiliense and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae detection in a boa.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135448526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Neoplasms are among the most impacting disease diagnoses in veterinary medicine and have become increasingly common due to the greater longevity of animals as living conditions improved. The Mongolian gerbil is a small rodent species that has become popular recently. In these animals, the occurrence of neoplastic processes is relatively common, mainly tumors of the ventral gland in males and ovarian tumors in females. This work aims to report an ovarian tumor in a Mongolian gerbil Meriones unguiculatus Milne-Edwards 1867 (Rodentia, Muridae). At the initial presentation, the animal had dyspnea, prostration, and increased abdominal volume in the topography of the right ovary of approximately 2 cm. The animal was submitted to exploratory laparotomy because of the emergency nature of the case and the owners’ refusal of additional exams due to financial restrictions. Thus, an ovariohysterectomy was performed, followed by a histopathological examination. The histopathology revealed an ovarian papillary carcinoma affecting both ovaries and cystic endometrial hyperplasia. With surgical removal and drainage of the thoracic fluid, the animal showed good recovery, with general improvement and return to regular activity, with a life expectancy of two years. Currently, the demand for specialized veterinarians for unconventional pets is increasing. This condition allows owners to raise their animals more properly, favoring greater longevity. Knowledge about the prevalence and incidence of diseases in different species is of enormous relevance in establishing the appropriate therapy, improving life quality, and increasing life expectancy in animals’ lives.

Electric fences are great alternatives in the management of cattle pasture; however, they require extra attention when cherishing for the animals’ safety. Electric shocks caused by an artificial source are known as eletroplession or electrocution. Cases associated with electric fences often occur due to incorrect handling or even herd dispersion during panic. This study aims to report the epidemiological, clinical, and pathological features of prolonged electric shock in a bovine from Santa Catarina state, Brazil. The animal was found with its pelvic members stuck in the low-voltage electric fence. Twenty-four hours after the incident, the bovine showed clinical signs of apathy, depression, anorexia, and reluctance to move. In 96 hours, it was found in a lateral decubitus, with pedaling movements and nystagmus. After another 48 hours, there was no clinical improvement, and the animal was euthanized due to the unfavorable prognosis. Necropsy was performed, and fragments of all organs were collected for histopathological analysis. Gross and microscopic lesions associated with clinical signs demonstrated acute rhabdomyolysis due to electric shock, which resulted in the animal's recumbency. Histopathological analysis also revealed neurological damage due to the electric shock. Prolonged and low-voltage electrical discharges can cause acute rhabdomyolysis in bovines. This condition should be considered with a reserved to unfavorable prognosis due to the neurological disorders and possible kidney damage.
