Although anxiety symptoms and alcohol use have been widely researched, recent work has begun to examine the role of anxiety sensitivity in contributing to these mental health indicators. Unfortunately, minimal research has investigated the relationships between anxiety sensitivity, anxiety symptoms, and alcohol use among Latinos. The role of acculturation within these 3 constructs together has yet to be examined. Among a sample of 120 Latino adults, moderated mediational analyses revealed statistically significant conditional indirect effects such that anxiety symptoms mediated the relationship between anxiety sensitivity and alcohol use while an Anglo orientation moderated the anxiety sensitivity to anxiety symptoms link. The main findings indicated that the indirect effects were the most robust within low Anglo orientation. Alternative models were tested but not supported suggesting that the pattern of results were indicative of the self-medication hypothesis. The discussion highlights theoretical and practical implications.

Relative to other men, Latino immigrant men are disproportionately likely to experience challenging working conditions, including too many or too few hours, discrimination, and job (in)security. Previous research suggests that work contexts (particularly husbands’) may affect interactions between family members, which in turn, spill over into family functioning. The present study examined the patterning of 118 Mexican husbands’ self-reported workplace characteristics (i.e., job security, workplace discrimination, and work hours) and links with husbands’ and wives’ marital warmth and negativity. First, using a 2-step cluster analysis, we identified 3 work context groups: (1) Moderately Secure, Overtime, Minimally Discriminatory Workplaces, (2) Highly Secure, Full-Time, Moderately Discriminatory Workplaces, and (3) Minimally Secure, Full-Time, Highly Discriminatory Workplaces. Second, using mixed-model ANCOVAs, we found (a) a main effect for work context on marital warmth, indicating that husbands in Group 2 reported more marital warmth than husbands in Group 3, and (b) a spouse-by-group interaction showing that whereas Group 2 husbands expressed more warmth relative to their wives, Group 3 husbands expressed less warmth relative to their wives. No significant effects were found for spouses’ marital negativity. Taken together, the same job opportunities that motivate low-wage Mexican-origin workers to migrate to the United States may also strain their close relationships. Researchers and practitioners should address links between work contexts and family well-being in other Latina/o samples and explore in greater depth how work characteristics that would otherwise serve to buffer and protect family functioning may have hidden costs for couple and family functioning.

The transition to college can be difficult for many students; however, Latina/o students can face unique cultural stressors, impacting psychological health. Intragroup marginalization, or feeling marginalized by members within one’s cultural community, is one such stressor that can impact Latina/o students’ college experiences. Despite the challenges many Latina/o students face, Latina/os also demonstrate resilience and the ability to succeed. This study expands existing research on intragroup marginalization, using a cross-sectional design to test a mediational model of intragroup marginalization from friends and psychological distress, with locus of control and peer social support in a sample of 137 Latina/o college freshmen from a large public university in the western United States. Intragroup marginalization from friends predicted psychological distress. In addition, locus of control and social support from friends were identified as mediating variables. This research demonstrates the negative impact of intragroup marginalization from friends for Latina/o students, as well as the protective role of having an internal locus of control and peer social support on experiences of psychological distress. Results also highlight unique factors related to Latina/o freshmen college experiences as a means for improving Latina/o students’ success in college.

Short, reliable, and valid depression measures are needed for both social scientists and as screening tools in therapeutic practice. Using self-report data, 2 cross-sectional studies were conducted to find evidence to support the validity of the PHQ-8 for Latina/o university students. Study 1 used a psychology subject pool to recruit 257 Latina/o college students (23% men, 77% women; mean age = 19.5). Study 2 examined Latina/o women and men separately. The participants came from a subject pool and upper-division general education classes to recruit 859 Latina/os (33% men, 67% women; mean age = 19.7). In Studies 1 and 2, confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) indicated that both a 1-factor solution and 2-factor solution fit the data; however, the 2 factors were highly correlated, so a single factor was recommended. In Study 1, the PHQ-8 had good convergent validity with the Center for Epidemiologic Study’s Inventory for depressed mood (Kohout, Berkman, Evans, & Cornoni-Huntley, 1993). In Study 2, the PHQ-8 was invariant (i.e., configural, metric, scalar) between women and men. In both studies, the PHQ-8 was negatively related to quality of life and positively related to anxiety, parental psychological control, and rumination. In Study 2, the PHQ-8 was also positively related to family cohesion. Hence, it was determined the PHQ-8 had adequate psychometric properties with male and female Latina/o university students. Thus, the PHQ-8 is recommended as a brief measure that can be easily implemented by social scientists, medical professionals, or clinicians as a nonfatiguing assessment tool for measuring depressive symptoms. 参与者来自一个学科池和高年级通识教育班级,招募了859名拉丁裔/o(33%男性,67%女性;平均年龄= 19.7岁)。 Estudio 2 examinó los hombres y mujeres Latinos porseparado。 En el estudio 1, PHQ-8 tiene buena veridez convergente con el CES-D 10 (Kohout, Berkman, Evans, & Cornoni-Huntley, 1993)。

There is limited research on the traditional Hispanic male and female gender roles of machismo and marianismo, respectively, in relation to negative cognitions and emotions. Given the vulnerability of Hispanics to negative cognitions and emotions, it is important to examine sociocultural correlates of emotional distress. Therefore, we examined associations of machismo and marianismo with negative cognitive-emotional factors (i.e., depression symptoms; cynical hostility; and trait anxiety and anger) in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Sociocultural Ancillary Study, a cross-sectional cohort study of sociocultural and psychosocial correlates of cardiometabolic health. Participants were aged 18-74 years and self-identified as Hispanic of Central American, Cuban, Dominican, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South American, and other Hispanic background (N = 4,426). Results revealed that specific components of machismo (traditional machismo) and marianismo (family and spiritual pillar dimensions) were associated with higher levels of negative cognitions and emotions after adjusting for socio-demographic factors (p < .05); these associations remained consistent across sex, Hispanic background group, and acculturation. Findings can inform mental health interventions and contribute to our understanding of the importance of gender role socialization in the context of self-reported negative cognitive-emotional factors in Hispanics.

OBJECTIVE Trauma exposure among Latina immigrants is common. Social support networks can buffer the impact of trauma on mental health. This study characterizes the social networks of trauma-exposed Latina immigrants using a social network analysis perspective. METHODS In 2011-2012 a convenience sample (n=28) of Latina immigrants with trauma exposure and presumptive depression or posttraumatic stress disorder was recruited from a community clinic in Washington DC. Participants completed a social network assessment and listed up to ten persons in their network (alters). E-Net was used to describe the aggregate structural, interactional, and functional characteristics of networks and Node-XL was used in a case study to diagram one network. RESULTS Most participants listed children (93%), siblings (82%), and friends (71%) as alters, and most alters lived in the US (69%). Perceived emotional support and positive social interaction were higher compared to tangible, language, information, and financial support. A case study illustrates the use of network visualizations to assess the strengths and weaknesses of social networks. CONCLUSIONS Targeted social network interventions to enhance supportive networks among trauma-exposed Latina immigrants are warranted.
