In 2022, EFSA was mandated by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (M-2022-00070) to provide technical assistance on the list of Union quarantine pests qualifying as priority pests, as specified in Article 6(2) of Regulation (EU) 2016/2031 on protective measures against plant pests. As part of Task C, EFSA conducted expert knowledge elicitations for candidate priority pests, focusing on the lag period, expansion rate and impact on production (yield and quality losses) and the environment. This report provides the rationale for the dataset on Nepovirus myrtilli, delivered to the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, to feed the Impact Indicator for Priority Pest (I2P2) model and complete the pest prioritisation ranking exercise.

Chemical monitoring reporting guidance: 2025 data collection
Pub Date : 2025-01-31 DOI: 10.2903/sp.efsa.2025.EN-9245
European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Alexios Zormpas, Vaia Mitoula, Emanuela Marchese, Paula Medina Pastor, Marta Vericat Ferrer, Stefania Salvatore, Alicia Gutiérrez Linares, Daniela Brocca, Valentina Bocca

This document should be used for reporting to EFSA samples analysed for chemicals. It provides guidance on how to use the Standard Sample Description (SSD2) data model for submission to the EU of analytical results of food and feed samples taken during control activities carried out to monitor residues of pesticides and veterinary medicinal products, contaminants, food additives, and food flavourings. This document does not replace – but complements and updates some aspects of – the general EFSA Guidance on Standard Sample Description (SSD2) and Guidance on Data Exchange (GDE2). It is meant to provide guidance on the specific technical and legislative requirements as well as clarity on data quality validation for chemical monitoring (ChemMon) data at national and EU levels.

Microbiological hazards associated with the use of water in the post-harvest handling and processing operations of fresh and frozen fruits, vegetables and herbs (ffFVHs) 与新鲜和冷冻水果、蔬菜和香草(fffFVHs)收获后处理和加工过程中用水有关的微生物危害

This tender, developed under a self-task mandate from the BIOHAZ Panel, analysed the characteristics of the water and the practices followed by the European food business operators (FBOs) to maintain process water quality used during the post-harvest handling and processing operations for fresh and frozen fruits, vegetables and herbs (ffFVHs) using: information and data obtained from FBOs, experimental data extracted from literature and dynamic mass balance modelling. Quantitative data were obtained from 61 FBO scenarios (29 from the fresh-whole sector, 19 from the fresh-cut sector, and 13 from the frozen sector). The impact of no water treatment was evaluated in 17 scenarios, while in 44, the challenges of maintaining the microbiological quality with water disinfection agents were examined, including chlorine, peroxyacetic acid, and hydrogen peroxide. The findings highlighted that when no water disinfection treatment was used Listeria monocytogenes was detected in some scenarios of the fresh-whole and frozen FVH sectors as well as Salmonella, pathogenic Escherichia coli and norovirus in the fresh-cut and frozen FVH sector. Additionally, inadequate or improper monitoring systems resulted in either excessively high or insufficient disinfectant concentrations in the water, which, when too low, failed to sufficiently reduce the microbial load. The literature review revealed a tendency to: focus on leafy greens, use chlorine-based disinfectants, and employ chemical oxygen demand (COD) as the primary physico-chemical parameter, with total dissolved solids (TDS) and turbidity considered to a lesser extent, as indicators of water quality. Additionally, dynamic mass balance modelling was used to interpret experimental data from literature and FBOs. The model was fundamental to estimate key unknown parameters, predict the microbial contamination and accumulation of organic matter and allowing to simulate “what-if scenarios.”

This technical report provides guidance for reporting countries on how to submit their isolate-based quantitative antimicrobial resistance data, and data on the prevalence of zoonoses and microbiological agents and contaminants in food, food-borne outbreaks, animal populations and disease status. To collect these data, EFSA has created the Data Collection Framework (DCF) application. This report includes data dictionaries to guide the reporting of information derived from 2024 under Directive 2003/99/EC, Regulation (EU) 2017/625, Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/627 and Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2020/1729. The objective is to explain in detail the individual data elements of the EFSA data models that are to be used for XML data submission through the DCF. In particular, it explains the data elements to be reported, including information about the data type, a reference to the list of permitted terms and any additional business rules or requirements that may apply.

This manual provides guidance for reporting antimicrobial resistance in food-producing animals and foodstuffs derived therefrom under the framework of Directive 2003/99/EC and Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2020/1729. The objective is to harmonise and streamline Member States reporting to ensure that the antimicrobial resistance data collected are relevant and easy to analyse at the European Union level. Detailed guidelines are provided for reporting data and completing the free-text forms. This guidance typically applies to Salmonella spp., indicator commensal Escherichia coli, Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni, and the animal populations and food categories to be reported on. Guidance is also provided on indicator Enterococcus and meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The manual notably includes specific guidance for reporting mandatory data on Salmonella spp. and commensal indicator E. coli producers of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs)/AmpCs/carbapenemases obtained from the harmonised routine monitoring, and ESBL-/AmpC-/carbapenemase-producing E. coli derived from specific monitoring. This manual is specifically aimed at guiding the reporting of information deriving from the year 2024.
