Suokas, J., Heino, P. and Karvonen, I., 1990. Expert systems in safety management. Journal of Occupational Accidents, 12: 63–78.
The development of computer support for safety and reliability analysis is reviewed, and the possibilities of knowledge based expert systems in safety management are discussed. Two areas are described in more detail: knowledge based safety analysis in process design, and knowledge based diagnosis and management of process disturbances in operation.
Knowledge based safety management is illustrated by two examples. The first one is HAZOPEX expert system aiding hazard and operability studies of process systems. The second example is KRM-information system aiding process operators and engineers in the early identification and management of potentially hazardous disturbances.
International trends in using knowledge engineering in safety analysis and management are also discussed.

Three proposed European Directives will affect the standards, use and marketing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) throughout Europe.
The PPE Product Directive deals with the manufacture and marketing of PPE. After July 1992 all PPE placed on the European market will have to carry the “CE Mark” indicating conformity with the Directive. All PPE except simple designs will have to be tested by approved bodies to harmonised European standards or to technical specifications. Manufacture of complex PPE intended for high risk uses will additionally be subject to quality control procedures.
The Framework Directive covers the general responsibilities of employers and employees for health and safety at work, and acts as a basis for other directives.
One of these Directives is the Use of PPE Directive which will require employers to provide and maintain suitable PPE for their workers, when risks cannot be controlled by other means. Employees will have to be consulted and trained in the use of PPE.
Both these Directives have to take effect by the end of December 1992.

Figures are estimated for the amount of pesticide sold in the UK and an estimate made of the number of people who may be occupationally exposed when the diluted products are used. The number of confirmed cases of poisoning is used to suggest that, while there seems to be good control of acute risks, there is still a need to ensure high levels of operator protection. The legislation influencing the selection and use of protective clothing is outlined.
