Have You Ordered Copies of the Bound Journal?

Authority was granted the Editor at the last annual meeting to have volumes one, two and three of our Journal bound into one book. This work is practically completed. Only 150 copies are being bound so let us have your order promptly. This bound volume, including indexes, will be sold for $3.00 each. The supply is limited and the demand for library and private files is sure to greatly exceed the supply. Orders will be filled in the sequence in which they are received. The volume is being bound to conform to the proceedings of 1908, 1909 and 1910. Only a few copies remain unordered. If you wish one now is the time to send along your check for $3.00.

The Study of Some Feed Mixtures with Reference to Their Potential Acidity and Their Potential Alkalinity

PART I*

Historical

Interest in acid-base balance of diataries has increased greatly in recent years. Sherman and his collaborators pointed out the basis for work along this line when they made more accurate determinations than had hitherto been available of the ash constituents of the common feeds.

Sherman1 has shown that meats and cereals have a preponderance of acid-forming elements, while on the other hand, fruits and vegetables have an excess of base-forming elements.

It has been shown that ash has an influence on the reaction of the urine. Acid-forming feeds lead to the formation of more acid urines, and base-forming feeds cause the excretion of less acid or alkaline urines. However it has been found in studies carried on with men that certain exceptions were found, namely, prunes, plums, cranberries, which although yielding a basic ash, nevertheless increase the acid excretion due to the presence of benzoic acid, excreted . . .

Our Annual Meeting

After much balloting and careful deliberation the Board of Directors have voted to hold the next annual meeting of our association at Purdue University, Lafayette, Ind. The great majority of our membership, through individual ballot, voted for Purdue. A great many felt that the convention should go to the Pacific coast, and especially the Pacific Northwest, as no meetings have ever been held there. On the other hand, the very popular preference for the Central West and the much larger attendance which could be guaranteed there seemed reason enough to warrant the Board of Directors choosing Purdue as the place. The week of August 16–21 has been selected as the date. Prof. Phillips and his staff are cooperating with President Kirkpatrick in arranging the program and the preliminary plans are under way for one of the best conventions we have ever had. There are just two obligations which you . . .

The Development of Egg Laying Contests in the United States and Canada

The past ten years has witnessed wonderful development and interest in poultry husbandry. This has been due to a considerable extent, to the development of egg laying contests in America. These contests have demonstrated the wonderful ability of hens to lay eggs. They have likewise demonstrated that hens differ in their egg laying ability. These contests have done much to focus public interest upon poultry raising and its possibilities. These contests have also been instrumental in solving many perplexing problems of management, with the result that poultry raising is now carried on far more efficiently than formerly, or than it probably would have been had not egg laying contests become so firmly established. Early egg laying contests were started by private interest, largely for advertising advantage.

The heavy enrollment in Poultry Classes at the Massachusetts Agricultural College made it necessary to take on another full time instructor and one for part time. Mr. A. Lawrence Dean, formerly State Leader of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club work, has been added to the Department and Mr. Earle H. Nodine, of Connecticut, succeeds him in directing the work of the Clubs. Mr. E. J. Burke is giving part time to poultry instruction, having charge of the Federal Board students.

There are 370 students enrolled in Poultry Classes this term, including 30 in the Winter Short Course and 12 Federal Board men (wounded soldiers.) A list of Unit courses has been adopted for the latter group, whereby a subject is covered every month, making it possible for soldiers to enroll at the beginning of any month during the year and coninuing for 11 consecutive months.

Increasing Consumption of Eggs at Home and Abroad
W.A. Brown

An Address Delivered before the Eighth Annual Convention Canadian Produce Association, Hamilton, Feb. 10th and 11th, 1920.

Introduction

Eggs have been an important article of diet from the earliest ages. Perhaps no article of food is more commonly eaten or served in a greater variety of ways than eggs. The earliest missionaries found the Pagans of Europe celebrating a festival at the time of the vernal equinox (Easter), in which eggs were used in quantities, and even in the depths of Africa the first explorers were offered eggs and poultry in the rude market places of that dark continent.

Commercially eggs have become an important factor in the business of the world. In late pre-war years the world’ s egg production increased rapidly. Great Britain alone, in 1913, imported eggs from fifty-five different countries, while Germany, in the volume of her imports was a close second.

World-wide consumption also increased. . . .

Progress of Poultry Standardization in Kentucky
ARTHUR S. CHAPIN

The standardization of standard bred poultry, by counties, in Kentucky has doubled or more than doubled in the past six yers. Two counties adopted the plan of standardizing Barred Rocks in 1914, and about 7000 hatching eggs were distributed by county agents. During 1919 sixty-nine counties standardized in Barred Rocks, White Rocks, White Wyandottes and Rhode Island Reds, and 461,945 pure bred hatching eggs and 21,000 baby chicks were distributed through the extension service. Nine counties have organized Breed Associations for the purpose of selling hatching eggs to other counties.

This plan of standardization is stimulating the poultry industry of the state and the breeders, county agents and prominent agricultural people are backing the work in a most remarkable way.

The following figures will show the results of standardization and one will readily see the wonderful possibilities in its future development as a supply of hatching eggs for hatcheries, as . . .
