Persistent posture and movement asymmetry is one of the most common reasons for an infant to be referred to an osteopathic practice. To clarify the causes of these patterns, differential diagnostic questions are at the heart of every (osteopathic) intervention. The General Movement Assessment (GMA) has been established internationally as a valid, quick and effective examination method for the early detection of developing cerebral palsy. By observing the spontaneous movements of the infant generated by central pattern generators, the so-called general movements, the affected children can be identified very early and given targeted further diagnostics and early therapy. The GMA is also able to detect osteopathic lesions and can be used to monitor therapy, even after osteopathic intervention. The GMA is quick to learn but requires intensive practice and regular calibration by tutors from the General Movements Trust.

Fasciae mainly consist of water. Therefore, any change in this element will have a significant impact on the entire tissue. It is helpful for movement therapists to think about the sponge-like reaction of the tissue to their interventions. A skilful interplay of temporary dehydration and subsequent rehydration not only promises tissue renewal, but can also alter the stiffness of the treated tissue. Mechanical pressure can cause the molecular structure of the hyaluronic acid to change and thus the viscosity. A lack of movement, on the other hand, leads to faster ageing, which is presumably related to a decrease in crystallised water in the tissue.

Based on a different definition and diffuse variety of methods of osteopathy as well as a partially incorrect listing of principles, this study attempted to extract essential paradigms of an original osteopathy from the four works of A.T. Still, the founder of osteopathy. In order to minimise the scope for interpretation, the exact wording and the author‘s descriptions in the historical and socio-cultural context were predominantly adhered to. As a result, six guiding ideas were found which, despite the chronological difference, can still be considered to be consistent with science today. This enables osteopathy, which is based on the paradigms of the original A.T. Still, to become an integral part of current humanities and natural science disciplines.
