The orofacial functions emerge in the course of a long development and maturation process. These are sucking, swallowing, chewing, ventilation and phonation. This article deals with the physiological process of swallowing.

Objective: Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in surgical patients aims at reducing postoperative pain and enhancing recovery. The effects of OMT have not been extensively studied in cardiac surgery patients, mostly owing to the fact that a limited number of osteopathic physicians are trained in thoracic surgery.

Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed to identify all currently available data on post- operative OMT in cardiac surgery patients. Case reports and case series were excluded. Risk of bias of the eligible studies was assessed individually using specific protocols. Among the outcomes of interest were postoperative pain, hospital length of stay, changes in respiratory capacity, and changes in cardiac index and mixed oxygen venous saturation (SvO2) measurements.

Results: We identified four eligible studies which were included in the quantitative analysis of the present review.

There were three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and one non-randomized controlled cohort study which investigated on outcomes of OMT in cardiac surgery patients. The most common cardiac operations performed were coronary artery bypass grafting, valve procedures, combined procedures, and aortic operations. Numerous OMT modalities were used on postoperative patients. The OMT group of patients showed improvement in pain management and respiratory capacity, and shorter hospital length of stay.

Conclusions: Osteopathic treatment might be helpful as an adjunct to current medical therapies in mitigating postoperative pain and improving the overall patient's functional status.

Etiological factors, risk factors and mechanisms of action of afflictions, healing reactions and somato-physiological experience-context-dysfunction patterns characterize the specific treatment approaches within the framework of psychosomatic osteopathy (PSO). The case study of an athlete who suffered performance losses is intended to exemplify the therapeutic principle of PSO. In addition, the process of multimodal bifocal integration is presented.

Bone is elastic and deformable. However, if a bone does not return to its former position after trauma, chronic traction, pressure or torsion, pain will remain in the bone and in the non-stretchable fascia, tendons, capsule and ligament structures involved. Following the introduction of the theoretical basis of a new manual method for the treatment of chronic pain in the musculoskeletal system in the previous issue with the strain relief concept [4], this article is dedicated to the practical application. Using the lower extremity as an example, it demonstrates how the osseous tissue can manually be freed from the strain, thus successfully reducing or even eliminating pain.

Osteopathische Behandlungsmöglichkeiten chronisch entzündlicher Darmerkrankungen
Pub Date : 2024-02-27 DOI: 10.1016/S1615-9071(24)00010-8
Julia Fernandez Pestonit, Theresa Hesse

This article is based on a master's thesis which examined osteopathic treatment options for the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) Crohn's disease (MC) and ulcerative colitis (UC).

The many years of research in conventional medicine is reflected in the existence of comprehensive S3 guidelines for both diseases. Although there is also already research within osteopathy on treatment options for IBD, it is actually limited to individual studies and therefore cannot be regarded as generally valid. This qualitative research attempted to capture MC and UC in osteopathic practice with all its facets.
