After years of recalcitrance and even outright hostility by the administration of President George Bush to regulating the emission of American-generated greenhouse gases, the long – and in many circles, maddening – wait for the US federal government to take action may finally be over.

Intersolar 2007, to be held in the solar city of Freiburg in Germany in the next few weeks, reflects the dynamic and growing solar technology industry in Europe. We asked some of those companies who will be present – from different sectors of the industry – for their thoughts at a time of huge change and momentum. David Hopwood poses the questions.

Continuing coverage of the latest financial trends and developments in the renewable energy and related sectors. While the S&P 500 and NASDAQ languished in the doldrums during the first quarter of 2007, strong performances by wind and solar companies drove the NEX 17.6% higher.

In today's society of over-consumption, most agree that we need a two-tier approach to sustainability; reduce energy demand from fossil fuels on the one hand, and use renewable energy where possible on the other. Solar Fabrik is demonstrating this ideal to the full with a ‘zero-emissions’ headquarters and manufacturing facility in Freiburg. David Hopwood talked to Andrea Ocker and ceo Christoph Paradeis about the future of solar as a viable, market-driven technology.

Many countries are looking not only to expand their domestic use of renewable energy, but to develop local technology manufacturing industries to serve that demand. Wind analysts Joanna Lewis and Ryan Wiser examine the ways different countries have sought to develop large WT technology manufacturing industries.

A brightfield is an abandoned or contaminated property (brownfield) redeveloped to use solar technology. In the US, the Department of Energy created a Brightfields program to enable communities to transform idle, unproductive assets into aesthetically pleasing properties that generate both clean energy and revenue for the community; but despite being greeted with enthusiasm, the brightfield concept has seen little takeup. Lori Ribeiro looks at one such project in Brockton, MA, USA, which shows that it is viable to turn brownfields into environmental, aesthetic, economic and educational assets.

After years of often powerful rhetoric about the need to diversify American energy supplies, but relatively few tangible results at the federal level, the US may now be poised to move ahead on renewable energy and energy efficiency legislation, explains US Correspondent Don C. Smith.

Arriving from all corners of Europe, wind energy actors will meet this May at the European Wind Energy Conference (EWEC) organised by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) to identify the actions required to re-shape the European energy mix and discuss what role wind energy can play.
