Teacher training for EST: Problems and methods 科技教师培训:问题与方法

For over a decade the EST teacher-training course at the University of Chile at Santiago has been a part of the regular undergraduate programme in English language for teacher-trainees. Concentrating at first on scientific and technological English, in later years the course has also included English for vocational purposes. The students in the course, like most potential and practising EFL/ESL teachers, have a humanities background; further, they have learned their English according to the traditional, “general” English system. Accordingly, they come to the EST teacher-training course with five main types of problems: attitudinal, conceptual, linguistic, methodological, and organisational. A combination of theoretical and practical classes has been designed to overcome these problems. By careful planning and patient teaching the course builds an entirely new, integrated conceptual network for the students. Not only the content of the course, but also the methodology used in its presentation can serve as a frame of reference for other institutions planning preservice or inservice teacher training in EST/ESP.

Some propositions about ESP 关于ESP的几个命题

This paper attempts to characterise specific purpose English by contrasting it with some possible forms of English with nonspecific purposes. It is argued that all uses of English are specific in their nature, and that all teaching of English as a Foreign Language should be addressed to specific purposes. Three approaches towards this end are discussed: the use of simulated purposes within the classroom, the use of real purposes external to the classroom, and the use of relevant literature. It is argued that an ESP course should be characterised by the use of authentic materials, an orientation to purposeful activities on the part of the learners, and self-access organisation of the learning. Three approaches to appropriate methodology are discussed—the approach through register, through discourse, and through study skills.

This article describes the planning, writing, and putting into operation of an intensive course for personnel destined for work in the foreign department of a large commercial bank. A detailed account is given of the compilation of the integrated grading test that is used at the beginning of the course to split up the students into homogeneous groups, and of the closely written course, which is programmed day by day down to the last detail. The writer points out how this course differs in its objectives and its priorities from the conventional language course, and gives some figures to show what progress is made during it.
