Rapid growing of internet applications and users has led the improvement of mobile web browser technology and standards such as HTML5. Recently, HTML5 is turning to be a de facto standard after some of its features has been implemented in major mobile web browsers. Moodle as a web based Learning Management System (LMS) has been popular in academic environment for supporting learning activities and allows teacher giving quiz online. However, some schools do not have an such expensive infrastructure to bring their LMS to the Internet. In addition, at home, some students may have difficulties to get online access. To address such problem, In this paper, we propose a prototype of offline web application and task synchronization in e-learning activity. This system utilizes the offline application capability and web storage of HTML5 enabled mobile web browser to bring an offline user interface to students. Using this system students are able synchronize their mobile phone with campus moodle for task retrieval/submission during their time in campus. and later doing the task at home without having to get online. Besides giving the concept, a prototype has been implemented to show its functionality.

This paper presents a back-gate coupled quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (QVCO) based on a differential Colpitts structure. With this topology, the QVCO achieved better performance on tuning range, power dissipation, and noise as compared with conventional structures of QVCO. Designed in TSMC 0.18 μm CMOS process, this QVCO showed a 33% tuning range. The simulated power dissipation is 2.89 mW with 1V supply voltage. The simulated phase noise at 1-MHz offset frequency is −108.52 dBc/Hz at 3.85 GHz center frequency.

This article proposes a method to visualize information flows in the brain stemming from specific components making up electroencephalograms (EEGs). This method combines multidimensional directed information analysis, which is a method used in causality analysis of multidimensional time series, with independent component analysis to extract only directed information related to specific EEG components. This method will enable us to find problems in brain information communication that are caused by specific diseases or organic disorders in the brain, and observe several information flows occurring simultaneously but completely independent of information communication in the brain. In this paper, as an example of applying the proposed method, an attempt was made to extract only information flows related to alpha waves from information flows in the multi-channel EEGs of a healthy individual.

This paper describes the principles and characteristics of a novel bidirectional superposed dual active bridge DC-DC converter with synchronous rectifier, which has a mechanism formed from two bridge-type converters that are linked through superposition in additive polarity in series. Conventionally, for an isolated dual active bridge DC-DC converter, the rated voltage of its switching elements is decided according to the DC power source voltage and load current. Therefore, as the voltage and current specifications of a DC-DC converter become higher, physical size becomes larger, conduction and switching losses increase and power efficiency reduces. To solve this problem, the authors devised the proposed DC-DC converter capable of lowering the rated voltage of switching elements, by means of sharing DC power source voltage and load current between two converters. Further, the capacity of the high frequency transformer becomes small, making the DC-DC converter more efficient and smaller. We designed and constructed a lkW DC-DC converter prototype, and conducted performance evaluation testing. As a result, a conversion efficiency of 98.2% at a rated output of lkW was obtained. A detailed analysis of power flow was also carried out, to identify the characteristics of the converter developed.

This paper presents a comparative reliability analysis of a dc power distribution system in a range of 400 Vdc at the facility level against a typical ac distribution, for critical datacenter loads. Assumptions and conditions are established to allow meaningful comparisons. Inherent availability and survival function are used as the two reliability metrics. Analytical reliability models for various common configurations are developed, and quantitative results are obtained based on a set of generic reliability data. The study indicates that the dc system would be more reliable than the ac to a certain extent when considering a configuration with multiple units of uninterruptible power supply and loads but without redundancy. However, on a large scale with redundancy, it is shown that the dc would have a similar reliability level to that of the typical ac distribution.

A new switch-and-stay combining (SSC) scheme is proposed. In contrast to the traditional signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based SSC, the new SSC scheme employs the magnitude of the product of the fading factor and matched-filter output as the switch statistic. To illustrate the receiver performance of the new SSC scheme, the bit error rate (BER) of BPSK signalling is derived for the independent but not necessarily identical Rayleigh fading channels. Numerical results based on the analytical result and simulation are presented. The simulation result validates the accuracy of the analysis. From the numerical comparison, the new SSC significantly outperforms the SNR-based SSC, and moreover it even has a better performance than the SNR-based selection combining (SC) for some range of the average SNR.

Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) is one of the most popular methods of the approximate near neighbor search. In applications that require the nearest neighbors of queries in a short time, LSH is sometimes used in pruning of the candidates of nearest neighbors. While the pruning reduces the processing time greatly, it also reduces the chances of retrieving the exact nearest neighbors. However, the pruning of nearest neighbor candidates using LSH has not been considered theoretically. Thus in this paper, we investigate the pruning effect by deriving the formulae of retrieval accuracy and computational cost of distance calculation for uniformly distributed data. Furthermore, we make evaluations on the formulae by comparison between simulation results and the theoretical values.

IEEE 802.15.4 defines physical layer specifications for compatible interconnections amongst devices using low-power transceivers. However, error performances of these transceivers must be discreetly studied to investigate the transceiver's energy expense on wireless communication. This paper reports a simulation-based study on the transceivers conducting direct sequence spreading spectrum (DSSS) processing and Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (OQPSK) modulation specified by IEEE 802.15.4. The study focuses on evaluating the bit error rate (BER) performances of these transceivers in Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh flat-fading channels. A Matlab-based simulator is developed to simulate the signal processing components of the DSSS transceivers such that the input/output signals of each component and the transceiver's BER curve can be drawn. The derived BER curves are found greatly degrading from the corresponding theoretical BER. The degradation may stem from the peculiar transceiver design and inferior orthogonality of the standard chip sequences. To redeem this degradation without changing the transceiver structure, the standard chip sequences are replaced with w-sequences possessing better orthogonality. Signals transmitted via the transceivers exploiting w-sequences are found to significantly outperform the counterpart via the transceivers using the standard sequences in withstanding noise and fading effects.

Optimum combining is already mentioned to be good matched technique for suppressing the multipath fading and reducing the effect of co-channel interference (CCI) in wireless communications. It has been used for either Gaussian fading channels and non-Gaussian fading channels for different conditions and purposes. In this paper, the performance evaluation of wireless digital communication systems for linear minimum mean square error diversity is investigated. The approach of this paper and its main contribution is to model the non-Gaussian fading channel of wireless systems. A new expression of outage probability in a non-Gaussian fading environment is studied by modeling fading channel as a spherically invariant random process (SIRP). As a special case of this work, it is straightforward to consider the situation where the interferers have equal powers and their number is no less than the diversity order. Finally, some numerical results show the impact of the number of antenna elements, the number of interferers and noise.
