In scientific text types the specific language configurations represent a register of language typicality which is regularly used in similar contexts of scientific discourse. It is obvious, that the appropriate knowledge about these structures is a condition for competent scientific outputs. The configured structures as specific patterns are manifested in different forms and functions both on the lexical and the textual level. The paper explains the theoretical premises for researching these structures and discusses the methodological potential of the frequencyoriented n-gram analysis as a challenging base for the qualitative analysis of linguistic data.

This article tries to give an insight into how medieval and early modern chronicles such as Rudolf’s Weltchronik and Hartmann Schedel’s Liber chronicarum capture the polysemantic topic of Babylon for their recipients. It shows that the focus lies on the description of the historic metropolis, the narration of the tower of Babel and the Babylonian exile. In some ways their modes of information transfer differ from one another. On the one hand, Schedel has a lot more to offer in terms of paratextual preparation, which put Babylon to the forefront effectively. On the other hand Rudolf separates narratives from the time of Babel onward, which means a crucial point for the structure of the text. As Schedel sets the Babylonian exile as a turning point on the macrostructure of history, Rudolf prefers to honor King David’s historical impact instead. While the plot of both works is much the same, the presentations of Babylon show some shifts in comparison for the medieval recipients.

This article investigates gender variation and change in the grammatical gender system of the indrefinnmarksmål dialect. The interior of Finnmark county, Indre Finnmark, has historically been closely linked to the Finno-Ugric population. The coexistence of Norwegian as a representative of the Indo-European languages and Sámi or Kven as representatives of the Uralic languages may have resulted in several specific features. In this article, I focus on morphological features related to grammatical gender.

The aim of this article is to discuss the phenomenon called linguistic sexism, i.e. a lack of symmetry between the sexes in a language. The focus lies on comparing Norwegian and Polish, which with regard to feminist language reform follow two different strategies for a more inclusive use of language. While Norwegian speakers aim at replacing gender-marked forms with gender-neutral ones, in Polish there is a clear tendency to differentiate between nouns referring to men and women in order to increase the visibility of the latter. The article outlines how the lack of symmetry between the sexes in both languages is manifested in various areas, such as generic use of masculine forms, word formation of gender-related nouns, lexical gaps in the case of women together with titles and address forms.
