After a short review of the evolution of satellite communications in the Federal Republic of Germany the European Communications Satellite ECS and the German/French broadcasting satellites TV-SAT D3/TDF-1 F3 are presented in order to illustrate the German participation in European communications satellite development. The state of the transponder technology, i.e. of the amplifier, mixer, filter and MIC technology is described. Future-oriented development work on solid-state transmit amplifiers, on-board regenerative equipments, 30/20-GHz-equipments and large infurlable antennas is also dealt with.

A dual channel receiver frontend for a 94 GHz radar with dual polarization capabilities is discribed. Ihe frontend consists of polarizer, circulator, filters, STC PIN-diode switches, balanced mixers and power divider for the LO and is built, except for the polarizer, using E-plane techniques. In this way, an integrated, canpact and very rugged frontend has became possible.

The dispersion characteristics of fin lines with arbitrary dimensions can be obtained from data published for fin lines centered in standard waveguide enclosures. The procedure is based on the transverse resonance method which has been widely used in the past to evaluate the properties of slab-loaded waveguides, ridged waveguides and similar structures.

Due to severe environmental constraints and the requirement for farfield measurement distances up to several kilometres it is a necessity to utilize in-door testing for modern spacecraft antennas. For this reason a cylindrical near field test facility has been analyzed, defined and implemented. The principle of cylindrical near field testing and the main characteristics of the facility are presented. The facility will be used for the tests of the antenna module of the German direct broadcasting satellite TV-SAT /1/.

A cooled receiver having a DSB noise temperature of 80-140 K in the frequency range 75-95 GHz has been built for radio astronomical observations. The quasioptical beam switch is followed by a 3 mm Schottky mixer and FET amplifier at 1.4 GHz. A phase locked LO is injected via waveguide and a ring-filter. This receiver has been tested in the laboratory and on the Metsahovi 13.7 m radio telescope.

At frequencies above 18 GHz a measurement bench dedicated for application-Laboratory use-i s proposed to give i nformat ion on phase using a 5 port principle. A classical wave guide reflectometer (K and Ka frequency band) can be improved to give vectorial reflection or transmission parameters, with standard and commercially available equipement. The calculator controls the measurement process and by different options offers classical automated scalar measurements, vectorial measurements, and also enhanced accuracy scalar measurements by vectorial correction of bench errors.

It is shown how the EM field over an object plane can be synthesised from a time domain record of the far-field radiation off the axis of symmetry. Two off-axis observations are sufficient to synthesise a two-dimensional distribution and the spatial resolution attainable (independent of distance) depends on the time variation of the source field. The experimental results use an antenna aperture as the object field but the method is intended for radar targets. A new technique of waveform processing in the time domain avoids singularities which can arise in frequency domain processing.

The design and performance of an S-band analogue/digital phase shifter GaAs IC chip set, developed for use in a phased array radar transmitter, will be described. The circuits have been used to demonstrate successfully the feasibility of using GaAs IC technology in this application, at a frequency where the more conventional transmission line techniques cannot be used easily due to the large size of the circuit elements. The present circuits rely on the use of lumped components, to minimise the area of GaAs used. The extension of the techniques to higher frequencies (C-band) will also be discussed.
