A novel approach to polarization measurements is presented. It is based on the phase-amplitude method of polarization measurement and is developed on the analogy between the polarization and reflection measurements. Procedures for computer controlled automatic calibration, measurement and error correction are analysed and discussed. Using standard hardware for vector measurements one can employ the proven technique for error correction originally developed for reflection measurements. Experiments show that this method offers a reliable, rapid and accurate determination of antenna polarization.

Multimodes coplanar lines with arbitrary cross-section shape are analysed by the spectral domain technique. Two approaches possible in the calculations of the properties of multiconductor printed transmission lines are proposed, discussed and compared to each other. The dispersion characteristics of some new and modified coplanar transmission lines are presented to show the universality of the proposed analytical formulation. This formulation can be also easy extended for the analysis of another coupled waveguiding structures like, for example, uni- or bilateral fin-lines.

Current progress in antenna near-field measurement techniques is presented. Emphasis is given to probe compensation for the spherical measurement system and to correction for probe position error in the planar measurement system. Also discussed are the recent design, implementation and validation of a cylindrical near-field range.

A major design requirement for many GaAs ICs is a knowledge of the coupling properties between various conductor and transmission line sub-circuits. Networks of different geometries have therefore been accurately assessed. Predictions and measurements are presented from over 20 circuits incorporating coupled line pairs, with and without intervening shielding lines and transmission crossover networks. Appropriate theories have been selected based on accurate comparisons with measurements. An application to switching amplifiers is illustrated.

Experimental comparison has been made between different ORO circuits with FET's of various origins and size around 11 GHz. Details of the most pertinent conclusions are given together with theoretical explanations of the observed results. A ¿105 dBc/Hz figure has been achieved at 10 KHz off carrier.

Use of low pressure epitaxy and mainly a batch process for integrated heat sink technology, associated with a very low inductive quartz encapsulation giving a radial impedance match, are described. Results for two types of these pretuned modules, one on copper the other on Diamond IIa, are given for CW oscillations reaching 800 mW with 10 % efficiency and junction temperature rise of 200°C.

A new method to reduce time drift in microwave sampling systems is presented. The influence of noise is discussed, giving the remaining time uncertainty as a function of the signal-to- noise ratio. Finally an example illustrates how this method can be applied within an automatic microwave sampling system.

A 3-m Radiotelescope with a surface accuracy of 30¿m (r.m.s.) has been constructed that will be used for astronomical observations at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths. At present the telescope is equipped with a tunable receiver for the frequency range from 80 to 90 GHz, a 256-channel filter spectrometer and an acousto-optic high resolution spectrometer. The various telescope and receiver control functions are carried out by micro-processors, controlled by a POP 11/34 computer.
