Prior knowledge of road traffic conditions on the freeways is of prime importance for motorists. With recent developments in technology it is possible for the vehicles to be equipped with communication and GPS systems. The equipped vehicles on the road can act as nodes to form an ad hoc network. These nodes can collect information regarding traffic conditions such as position, speed and direction from other participating nodes. Depending upon the number of participating nodes this collected information can provide useful information of driving conditions to the node collecting this information. With proper analysis this information can be used in detecting and or predicting traffic jam conditions on the freeways. In this paper the traffic information gathered by a node in an ad hoc network is viewed as a snapshot in time of the current traffic condition on the road segment. This snapshot is considered as a pattern in time of the current traffic conditions. The pattern is analyzed using pattern recognition techniques. A weight of evidence based classification algorithm is presented to identify different road traffic conditions. The developed algorithm is tested using data generated by microscopic modelling of traffic flow for simulation of vehicle or node mobility in ad hoc networks. Test results are presented under assumption of different levels of vehicles equipped with communication capability.

In this paper we present a smart protocol for intervehicle communication based on mobile ad hoc networks. The protocol is capable of handling both broadcast as well as unicast messages for a particular node. The protocol implements controlled flooding in an efficient manner to reduce unnecessary communication overheads. The protocol avoids forming clusters and clusterheads by using the concept of selective forwarding. Thus it gets the advantages related to clusters without actually forming one itself. It effectively deals with blind flooding by introducing a comprehensive retransmission time delay in the nodes. This retransmission delay favors the nodes in the direction of the destination and restricts other nodes from transmitting the same message again. The proposed protocol avoids the use of routing tables which have a short life in mobile networks needing frequent updates. Instead the protocol relies on directing the messages to geographic locations which are forwarded by any available intermediary nodes. The protocol also provides techniques for handling network fragmentation which is a frequent problem for the vehicular networks. The protocol is implemented using NS2 and simulation results are compared with AODV.

The document analyzes the deployability of approaches for network mobility (NEMO) in wireless vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). The vision for VANETs is road safety and commercial comfort applications enabled by short-range wireless technology. For a potential integrated solution of VANETs and NEMO, referred to as 'VANEMO', we consider a deployable system architecture and define requirements from a holistic view, taking into account economic, functional, and performance aspects. Next, we regard the vehicular network as a conventional mobile ad hoc network (VANET as a MANET), generalize possible solutions and classify them into two comprehensive approaches: MANET-centric and NEMO-centric. We analyze the two approaches with respect to the VANET specific requirements. We conclude that the MANET-centric approach meets the VANET functional and performance requirements better than the NEMO-centric approach.

We studied a new application system for RFID technology to enhance driving safety, with the aim of reducing traffic accidents near intersections. We investigated an experimental system that senses the presence and position of pedestrians equipped with an active tag, that sends sensed data to an on-board device of a vehicle near that position, and notifies the driver. Since a pedestrian's pattern of movement at an intersection is complicated, it is difficult to design a perfect motion-pattern model from the beginning. For this reason, we developed a basic movement-pattern model first, and gradually develop this model into a practical movement-pattern model. In this paper, we report on a conceptual image of our experimental system and the basic movement-pattern models for pedestrians developed for the experimental system.

Vehicular ad hoc networks use new protocols to enable security, services and other inventive applications to be run onboard many types of vehicles. In their design phase, those protocols and applications need to be extensively simulated but most of the work in the simulator field concentrates on the medium access and higher layer protocols. In this paper, through real world experimentations we first characterize the behavior of the channel regarding losses and we introduce a new class of object in NS2 called disturbers. These disturbers can be defined by a geometric shape, a specific attenuation inside the shape and a temporal function. Use case scenarii are provided to demonstrate the usefulness of this model in tailoring parameters for higher level VANET protocols.

This paper, focuses on the "enhancement" of multi- hop vehicular broadcast (MHVB). The protocol is fundamentally a flooding algorithm with special characteristics in order to efficiently disseminate information such as the positions and the velocities of the vehicles for the sake of active safety applications. The main purpose of this paper is to show the performance improvements obtained by adding more special characteristics to the existing version of MHVB. The enhancement procedure is carried out in two steps: by changing the shape of the backfire region in the algorithm and by introducing a new Dynamic Scheduling algorithm which prioritizes the packet transmission based upon "processing" of the received packets from the other vehicles. The key point in the proposal made to enhance the broadcast protocol is the balance between the application requirement and the performance of the protocol.

These years, there has been much research and development activity in safety service for ITS (Intelligent Transports System) globally because fatal accidents have been increasing rapidly according to spread of vehicles. In order to decrease traffic accident, cooperation between vehicle and infrastructure (C2I: Car to Infrastructure) and between cars (C2C: Car to Car) attracts much attention. In this paper, we introduce WAVE (Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment) technology that is under standardization for C2I and C2C communication as IEEE802.11p and IEEE P1609. Then we present developing WAVE device with dual lip wireless device. With dual device, WAVE system is expected to provide stable operation, reliable communication and higher performance. For the purpose of validity of WAVE system, we have developed typical safety application systems of crossroad collision avoidance scenario and front-tail collision avoidance scenario, and show evaluation plan.

Today, ITS (intelligent transport systems) is paid attention by people all over the world. ITS is the system that solves the road traffic problems by using communications technology of vehicles. IVC ( inter vehicle communications ) is the communications technology that vehicles exchange the information by using wireless LAN without any base stations. VANET ( vehicular ad-hoc network ) have been expected to provide new applications for passengers of vehicles, by enabling vehicles to communicate with each other via IVC as well as with roadside base stations via RVC ( roadside-to-vehicle communications ). We propose the COC ( contents oriented communications ) system on VANET via IVC. With COC, each vehicle collects original information that each vehicle has by communicating each other, and creates contents which may be useful for drivers, by analyzing original information. COC deliver the analyzed contents to other vehicles. The simulation results show that COC provide timely information of vehicular accidents and congestion to drivers.

As one major challenge today in transport is the reduction of greenhouse gas emission and the decrease of fuel consumption, the development of methods for the optimal use of a vehicle and fuel savings becomes then mandatory. Fleet management is especially concerned by this problem. Moreover, for the EUR05 norm to be fully efficient, the driver becomes a key player. By coaching truck drivers to avoid bringing their vehicles out of their optimal working range and to better anticipate the obstacles, significant economy savings in fuel and equipment can be achieved. In this context, we show that Information and Communication Technologies bring a new solution. Indeed, it is now possible to acquire the necessary data from the vehicle in order to analyse the driving behaviour of the driver. This paper describes a solution for solving optimal driver coaching issue, involving an access to vehicle data, a solution for data transmission on-board and off-board, and an efficient processing capability. Current pilots show a significant improvement, well-received by the drivers, and encouraging feedback for enhancement.

Fleet management is especially concerned by this problem. Moreover, for the EUR05 norm to be fully efficient, the driver becomes a key player. By coaching truck drivers to avoid bringing their vehicles out of their optimal working range and to better anticipate the obstacles, significant economy savings in fuel and equipment can be achieved. In this context, we show that Information and Communication Technologies bring a new solution. Indeed, it is now possible to acquire the necessary data from the vehicle in order to analyse the driving behaviour of the driver. This paper describes a solution for solving optimal driver coaching issue, involving an access to vehicle data, a solution for data transmission on-board and off-board, and an efficient processing capability. Current pilots show a significant improvement, well-received by the drivers, and encouraging feedback for enhancement.","PeriodicalId":106396,"journal":{"name":"2007 7th International Conference on ITS Telecommunications","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126402039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes the new version of the standard architecture for electronic fee collection, or the "road transport and traffic telematics - electronic fee collection - system architecture for vehicle related transport services", which is the title of the new ISO 17573. Differently from previous versions of the same standard, this new edition on one side takes into consideration the newly developed architectures for tolling in a number of European projects, and, on the other side, has the ambitious aim to act as basic reference architecture for all EFC related standards. To do this, a more general view has been taken for EFC related processes and actors, and, to better express all needed aspects, the open distributed processing (ODP) standard has been used for the description of the architecture. A brief description of the ODP concepts is also given in the paper, to better explain which are the architectural benefits gained by adopting such an architectural modelling technique.
