This study was motivated by river water pollution which has an impact on the health of residents who live along the Brantas River Watershed (DAS). Aim of this research is to determine the health awareness and vulnerability of women and their families who live in the Brantas Watershed. An ecofeminist perspective is used to explain women’s awareness and participation in protecting the environment and river water. This research uses a descriptive method with a survey research type. The research was conducted in Surabaya City and Sidoarjo Regency. The number of respondents was 200 housewives aged 19 to over 55 years. The research results show that there are still 11.50% of women in Sidoarjo Regency, and 3.40% from Surabaya who use river water and consider it suitable for household needs. Women and their families are also vulnerable to disease, where 35.30% of children from respondents in Surabaya have experienced skin diseases, and 34.2% of children from respondents in Sidoarjo have experienced diarrhea. However, it turns out that women also care about protecting and preserving the environment. This study concludes that efforts are needed to increase women’s awareness so that they can avoid behavior that is not beneficial to health, especially in their interactions with polluted river water.

Various acts of domestic violence are the reality that troubles family life in various social classes. This study seeks to investigate violence experienced by men among professional families and the causes of women to commit such act. This study deployed qualitative methods and conducted in-depth interviews of 53 informants. The finding of the study indicates that men not only experience single violence, but a variation of violence that occurred in professional families, such as physical, economic, verbal/psychological, and sexual violence. This study shows the triggers for women to commit violence against men among professional families are insecurity, jealousy, and inequality in socioeconomic status. Men are burdened with patriarchy and tend to be passive in reacting to the violence they experience. Masculinity makes male victims of violence suffer triple oppression: They become the victims; they are embarrassed because they get a negative stigma from the community for failing and not being able to lead their families; and when men become the victims, they ‘get punished’ because it is considered as ‘abnormal’ for men to become victims of violence. Men react to the violence committed by their wives by carrying out latent resistance, manifest resistance, and alienation.

Early marriage is still a central issue in Indonesian society, including in Ampenan, Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara. This study aims to reveal gender awareness and patriarchal relations in merariq kodeq culture in Ampenan Mataram. Sylvia Walby’s patriarchy theory is used as a tool to analyze. This study uses a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach. Subject of this research is women who are married for the first time and are under 19 years old. The results showed that merariq kodeq occurs through a long process of Sasak tradition that still survives today. The tradition also has implications for the emergence of patriarchal relations in domestic life. This study concludes that patriarchal relations in early marriage perpetuate domination not only in the private sector but also in the public sector. Patriarchal relations are also the root cause of domestic violence.

Level of family support for university students during the COVID-19 pandemic: A case study among students at the University of Malaya, Malaysia COVID-19
Pub Date : 2023-04-10 DOI: 10.20473/jsd.v18i1.2023.92-99
The COVID-19 pandemic has not only brought major changes to the survival of society at large. The spread of this virus also specifically has an impact on university students who are at home during the quarantine period. This study aims to identify the level of family support among the University of Malaya students. This study used a quantitative research method, with 103 respondents/university students from eight faculties at the University of Malaya. Researchers used a quantitative approach to analyze the information data obtained from respondents. In this study, the collected data were analyzed through descriptive analysis methods to determine the level of family support. The results showed that the level of family support was moderate. This shows that the role of the family is also very important for university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The family is the basis on which individuals depend for survival, where their basic functions include preparing an environment and situation that is suitable for the development of healthy family members physically, mentally, socially, and so on. This study concludes that family presence not only directly influences various aspects of child socialization but also has an important influence on individual mental health.

In 2010, the Semarang government normalized the Banjir Kanal Barat River by dredging and widening the river and managing spatial planning by adding a waterfront. The purpose of normalization is to increase the water discharge capacity so that it can accommodate water flow from three rivers (the Kreo River, the Kripik River, and the Garang River). The focus of this study is to identify social and ecological impacts after the normalization of the BKB River. This study uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The informants in this study numbered seven people, consisting of officers (managers of the BKB Weir and cleaning officers), RW heads, the community, and visitors. The results showed the impact on social aspects, namely that the community has new public spaces, brings economic opportunities, strengthens social solidarity through river mutual aid activities, and, after normalization, the BKB River area becomes prone to crime because the streets are quiet plus there is poor lighting. The ecological impact is the use of land on the banks of the BKB River for fish farming and agriculture. People’s behavior in seeing rivers is formed from the interactions they carry out at the individual level, so people have various perceptions in looking at the river, as mentioned above.

The military coup in Myanmar triggered a notorious uprising and subsequent armed conflict, resulting in military forces killing and imprisoning protesters, as well as setting fire to houses. This study employs a qualitative approach and uses James Scott’s survival mechanism theory to analyze the hardships experienced by families in fire-damaged villages in the Sagaing region. Our findings reveal that military forces carried out targeted attacks and burned down houses, particularly in villages that supported the People’s Defense Forces, leading to significant suffering among the local population. Families who were victims of this arson faced a host of challenges, including the loss of their homes and possessions, leaving them to seek shelter in the forest or makeshift tents, as well as food insecurity and a lack of access to medical care. Furthermore, many became unemployed as farming production costs were unaffordable and their children were unable to attend school. We highlight the urgent need for international humanitarian aid to address the dire situation faced by families whose homes were burned down by the military in Sagaing Region, Myanmar.

In 2022, cases of violence against women and children in East Kalimantan Province increased by 315 cases in just four months. Samarinda City is in first place for cases of violence against women and children in East Kalimantan Province, with 18 victims being students. This study focuses on the experiences and impacts of violence experienced by female students in Samarinda City as victims of violence in dating relationships. This type of research is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. This study employed Michel Foucault’s power relations theory. Data acquisition was carried out through in-depth interviews. The data was then processed using the Creswell method. This study found that patriarchal culture is still extremely strong, making the perpetrators believe that as men, they must be brave and dominant in a dating relationship to be able to maintain power and control over their partners. Victims of dating violence are willing to do whatever their partner requests in the hope that it will make their partner happier and love them more. This study concludes that the impact of violence on victims can take the form of verbal violence, physical violence, or psychological disturbances, requiring victims to seek medical assistance from a psychiatrist to help deal with mental disorders and trauma.

Lifestyle changes in rural communities through spatial reproduction practices: A case study in Madiun Regency

The production of space in rural areas as a result of modernization changes lifestyles not only within families but also at a broader level, namely between communities. This study aimed to examine how spatial reproduction occurs in villages in Madiun Regency by identifying the dominant agent and the stages of the process of spatial reproduction. This study employed qualitative methods. This study found that there are four stages in the spatial reproduction process in Madiun Regency, including outreach, coordination, mutual cooperation, and synergy. These four stages occurred because of the presence of the village head as the initiating agent and Village Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) and the Tourism Awareness Group as organizations that oversee various community activities in the tourism sector. According to the findings of this study, technology has accelerated the process of spatial reproduction, which is reflected in the existence of four regionalizations, including economic, social, housing, and public services. This study concludes that the reproduction of space does not always lead to conflict and social inequality in society. On the contrary, people are able to work together in building shared prosperity with the value of mutual cooperation.

This study aimed to examine how spatial reproduction occurs in villages in Madiun Regency by identifying the dominant agent and the stages of the process of spatial reproduction. This study employed qualitative methods. This study found that there are four stages in the spatial reproduction process in Madiun Regency, including outreach, coordination, mutual cooperation, and synergy. These four stages occurred because of the presence of the village head as the initiating agent and Village Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) and the Tourism Awareness Group as organizations that oversee various community activities in the tourism sector. According to the findings of this study, technology has accelerated the process of spatial reproduction, which is reflected in the existence of four regionalizations, including economic, social, housing, and public services. This study concludes that the reproduction of space does not always lead to conflict and social inequality in society. On the contrary, people are able to work together in building shared prosperity with the value of mutual cooperation.","PeriodicalId":111594,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Sosiologi Dialektika","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129117776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected social and economic sectors and has created new behavior and lifestyles. This article employs a quantitative methodological approach. Through interviews with 274 university students in East Java, Indonesia, the findings suggest that young people’s awareness of health behavior shifted after the spread of COVID-19. Before the pandemic, parents are struggling to have their children consume herbs. Youngsters consider herbs as a traditional lifestyle for the elderly. However, after COVID-19, the results suggest that young people are more supportive of herbal medicine in order to protect themselves from COVID-19. Therefore, it can be argued that COVID-19 pandemic generates a growing awareness for young people to consume herbal medicine, which becomes a new lifestyle and preserves the nation’s centuries-worth wisdom of the local culture.

Children who are at risk of dropping out of school are a social problem in the field of education. This study aimed to determine the habitus and labeling of at-risk school dropout children at senior high schools in the Lamongan Regency. The theoretical framework used was the Habitus theory proposed by Pierre Bourdieu and the Labeling theory by George Herbert Mead. This study employed qualitative methods. The informants in this study were high school students or equivalent. This study found that habitus among at-risk school dropout children leads to deviant behavior and labeling. This can encourage children to drop out of school. In addition, fields and capital also do not support children in studying. Children’s problems are also seen in the deviations committed both in the social and educational environment. That is what makes children have a label or nickname in society and their peer environment. This study can be used to inform government policies in the field of education, particularly in dealing with children prone to dropping out of school. In this case, the involvement of schools, teachers, parents, and the community is also essential.
