Beneficial approach of music therapy for the patients with dementia 音乐治疗痴呆患者的有益途径

Dementia has been one of the clinical syndrome characterized by its progressive decline in cognitive functions. Alzheimer’s type is the most common type of the dementia, which is followed by vascular type, Lewy body and frontotemporal dementia.2 Dementia means a collective name for progressive degenerative brain syndromes. It may bring impairment of thinking, memory, behavior and emotion.2 Typical symptoms include loss of memory, personality / mood changes, difficulty in performing previously routine tasks, and difficulty in finding the right words or understanding what people are saying.

Recent developments in herbal drug standard in India 印度草药标准的最新发展

Inherent complex nature of plants makes the standardization of herbal medicines a difficult task. The therapeutic actions of diverse secondary metabolites largely depend on age, genetic factors and geographical location of the plant species 3. The same plant species may show substantial different phytochemical leading to variable pharmacological actions. The heavy metal contamination and adulteration due to microorganisms and pesticides furthers creates difficulties in achieving uniform standards of herbal medicines worldwide. The raw material harvesting seasons, procedure, storage and processing of the same are critical in maintaining the quality of the herbal medicines 4. Another major issue with Indian ASU medicines is the polyherbal nature of the medicine, which makes them difficult for standardization. Non-availability of post-harvest facilities at primary level, lack of testing laboratories at the raw material production site, lack of product traceability are few of the important concerns from quality point of view.

An ingrown toenail or onychocryptosis is of common occurrence in approximately 20% of patients that see a Family Physician for foot problems. The condition of an ingrown nail occurs when the corner or side of the nail grows inwards into the soft flesh of the toe. This usually affects the hallux.It can be significantly disabling and painful for many patients and interferes with their ability to ambulate, exercise, even causing absence from school and work. It can be ascribed to several factors either singularly or in combination such as: heredity, obesity, poorly trimmed nails, neglect of proper foot hygiene, illfitting footwear, hyperhidrosis, nail abnormalities, trauma or injury.

Detection of free radical scavenging activity of dhaura, anogeissus acuminata (roxb) wall ex bedd in vitro 荆芥体外清除自由基活性的研究

The free radical generation is a universal phenomenon in eukaryotes utilizing oxygen for their energy requirements. The endoplasmic reticulum, peroxisomes, mitochondria, and lysosomes are the major sites of free radical generation in a cell.1–3 The free radicals are also generated by redox cycling of xenobiotics, exposure to ionizing radiations, radiofrequency and microwave radiations, visible light and UV radiation, many chemicals, oxygen– the most essential element of life, endogenous compounds and photosensitizing drugs.4–8 These free radicals trigger oxidative stress, which is one of the most important events in disease process and pathophysiology. It is not surprising that all most all diseases can be linked to triggering of oxidative stress and hence free radical formation in humans.9–11 Several synthetic drugs have been used to reduce oxidative stress however, they induce adverse toxic side effects.12,13 The use of plant derived or herbal products may be useful as antioxidants as they may not exert toxic adverse effects due to their biologic origin and composite nature.

Seen through the lens of health literacy and biological literacy, biomimicry is the golden thread through many if not all the biology inspired fields. Biomimicry is generally referred to as learning from and emulating the genius of nature’s forms, processes, and ecosystems to create more sustainable designs.3,4 Because biomimicry is an evolving field4 interdisciplinary collaboration is of import in advancing the discipline. The discipline is already growing rapidly as tools are being developed at the university level around distinct biomimicry methods and health related research questions.5 Notwithstanding, the methodology of biomimicry is closely related to Schools of Life Sciences, Schools of Health Solutions, Biology Departments and Design Departments.

Leishmaniasis, one of the most important neglected tropical diseases, is endemic in 98 countries, with more than 12million cases and 350million people living in areas at risk of infection.1,2 This disease is caused by an obligate intracellular protozoan of the genus Leishmania,3 and is broadly classified into three different forms: visceral leishmaniasis (VL), cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis.4 In Latin America, Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis is responsible for the cutaneous diffuse form of the disease,5 that in some cases may also result in visceral leishmaniasis.6,7 According to the Brazilian Ministry of Health, since 2005, the presence of L.(L.) amazonensis has been present in almost all Brazilian regions5, thus raising concern about this infection. The first-line drugs for leishmaniasis treatment are sodium stibogluconate (Pentostan) and meglumine antimonite (Glucantime); amphotericin B and pentamidine are second-line drugs.2 However, the current standard-of-care is unsatisfactory due to are expensive, potentially toxic and long-term treatment requirements, resulting in patient noncompliance.2 Also, there are significant differences in the sensitivity of these species to standard drugs.8,9
