En el campo de la psicología ecológica, la noción de affordance refiere a la percepción de oportunidades para la acción en los objetos del entorno. Problemáticamente, la falta de unidad conceptual parece dominar la caracterización del fenómeno haciendo que su significado varíe drásticamente dependiendo del autor que hace uso de ella. Este artículo ofrece una exégesis sistemática al trabajo original de J.J. Gibson enfocándose en la pregunta sobre qué (a) son las affordances y (b) cuáles son sus componentes fundamentales (organismo, entorno y mutualismo). Finalmente, se propone una clasificación que permitirá categorizar diversas alternativas contemporáneas del concepto según la forma en la cual entienden la relación entre tales componentes.

Black holes are arguably the most extraordinary physical objects we know in the universe. Despite our thorough knowledge of black hole dynamics and our ability to solve Einstein’s equations in situations of ever increasing complexity, the deeper implications of the very existence of black holes for our understanding of space, time, causality, information, and many other things remain poorly understood. In this paper I survey some of these problems. If something is going to be clear from my presentation, I hope it will be that around black holes science and metaphysics become more interwoven than anywhere else in the universe.

When discussing quantum ontology, the debate has recently focused on comparing and contrasting wavefunction realism and its rivals. Among them one finds the primitive ontology approach, which is often conflated with the local beables program. In this paper I wish to clarify what I take to be the distinction between the notion of primitive ontology and the one of local beable. I argue that the primitive ontology is the local beable which allows for a dynamical, constructive explanation which preserves symmetries.

Our topic is a basic discussion of what it is to regard a bit of mathematics as referring to something physical, and the different options one has for explaining —and hence rendering non-miraculous— the empirical success of a mathematical formalism. In order to strip away as much extraneous distraction as possible, we will leave the particular case of the wavefunction in quantum theory aside and tell a simpler tale. A fairy tale, in fact. The aim is to foreground some possible relations between a mathematical formalism and the physical system it is used to represent.

Lovers typically entertain two sorts of thoughts about their beloveds. On the one hand, they think that the qualities of their beloveds provide reasons for loving them. On the other, they regard their beloveds as irreplaceable. Yet it may be asked how these two sorts of thoughts can coherently coexist. If Romeo loves Juliet in virtue of her qualities, shouldn’t another maiden with the same qualities be equally lovable for him? This paper draws some distinctions that are crucial to the understanding of reasons for love. Its aim is to show that, even though the claim that beloveds are irreplaceable is plausible to some extent, there is a sense in which beloveds are replaceable.

El artículo desarrolla un desafío a la validez de constructo de los experimentos de soborno consistente en que las motivaciones sociales no supervienen meramente de las características intrínsecas de los individuos, sino que dependen de factores contextuales, particularmente normativos, que otorgan contenido a dichas motivaciones. El déficit teórico que presenta el constructo de soborno se evidencia en una incompleta teorización de dicha dimensión normativa en la operacionalización del constructo de soborno, lo que se traduce en la falta de inclusión de operaciones que representen dicha dimensión a nivel concreto de la parametrización y la búsqueda de correlatos empíricos.

Las discusiones argumentativas comúnmente se describen en términos confrontativos, pero no está claro que la argumentación sea necesariamente confrontativa. Aquí argumento que la confrontación no es un elemento esencial de la argumentación y de hecho debe evitarse porque desalienta el comportamiento razonable. La razonabilidad, caracterizada aquí como una disposición a modificar las creencias propias ante buenos argumentos, es puesta en peligro por las metas confrontativas.
