Simulation is a teaching learning and assessment strategy used in medical education to prepare medical laboratory students for clinical practice. Simulation-based learning is aimed at bridging the gap between theory and practice through the use of innovative teaching strategies and thus it is considered the best alternative teaching, learning and assessment tool in preparing medical laboratory students for practical and professional life. Traditional methods of educating medical laboratory students are no longer sufficient in the present times largely influenced by the emergence of new infections, technology, and multimedia. In general, scarce literature supports the use of simulation to benefit medical laboratory student in areas of knowledge, value and realism. However, little emphasis has been placed to make application of the method.  The aim of the study was to determine the extent of the application of innovative simulation-based medical teaching and learning among staff in selected Kenya medical training campuses offering medical laboratory sciences in Kenya, with a view of improving the application of the simulation strategy. The study employed the census sampling technique. Data collection tools were structured questionnaire, interview, checklist and observation which were used for data collection to obtain information from the respondents.  Quantitative data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software version 22 for windows. Qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis. Both descriptive and inferential statistics particularly the Chi-square test statistics were used in data analysis. P-value was used to test the normality of the spread of the ages. From the findings, majority of the lecturers, 39 (83.0%) indicated that they understood and defined simulated medical laboratory experiences both actual and anticipated. The respondents reported that simulation-based teaching and learning enables them to earn continuous professional development (CPD) points. All the lecturers 47(100%) agreed that educational validity of simulation-based teaching and learning was one among the factors that shaped their decision to implement simulations. The principals cited issues such as untrained simulator instructor staff in MLS, lack of adequate infrastructure, as part of challenges they encountered while implementing innovative simulation-based teaching and learning. From the study, it was concluded that simulation-based teaching and learning was not applied uniformly across the MLS department, indicating a lack of standardization in training hence the knowledge, attitudes as well as skills acquired by the students before they graduate were not in line with the public expectation. There is a need for Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) management to ensure uniform application of innovative simulation-based teaching and learning across all MLS departments and hence standardization in training of medical

This study examines how female listeners of a phone-in radio programme called Zokonda Amayi respond to the content of the phone-in radio programme’s HIV and AIDS awareness messages.  The interrogation centered on female listeners residing in the grassroots locations of Lilongwe District in Malawi, central Africa. Zokonda Amayi phone-in radio programme is a weekly show which airs on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), the national broadcasting station.  Many women in Malawi are disproportionately affected by AIDS.  A mixed approach model was used to shed light on the applicability of phone-in radio programmes in hosting HIV and AIDS broad-mindedness in rural Malawian ladies.  Data was gathered in a standardized manner making use of questionnaires, interviews and focus group discussions on the research subjects.  Results highlight the high appreciation that the targeted listeners have for the content of the phone-in radio programme, a demonstration of how much they have benefitted and are continuing to profit from framing of HIV and AIDS awareness messages on the phone-in radio programme.  It is recommended that the producers of Zokonda Amayi phone-in radio programme should continue to invite health experts to the phone-in radio programme to be regularly talking about technical health related issues, for instance, how discordant couples can safely conceive if they wish to have a child or another child and other pertinent health issues

The intention of this paper was to determine usability of KOHA OPAC in information retrieval with regard to usability testing by undergraduate users at Technical University of Kenya Library (TU-KL) in Nairobi County. Usability testing can be realized by way of assigning tasks to a representative of the user population in order to determine whether users can be able to achieve the desired goal of retrieving information. To a great extent, success will depend on how users perform the tasks assigned to them. This study conducted usability test on actual users of KOHA OPAC at Technical University of Kenya Library. Qualitative data was collected using the think aloud method where study participants were required to verbalize their thought process as they performed search and retrieval tasks using KOHA OPAC. The number of errors made, time taken to complete search and retrieval activities were coded, recorded and analysed during usability testing. This helped the researcher to determine whether KOHA OPAC is easy to use and whether it saves time for the user. Undergraduate students for the study were selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The population of the study (n = 382) was determined using a simplified formula developed by Yamane. The study initiated a usability test which presented search scenarios where participants were invited to participate in searching and retrieving information resources using KOHA OPAC. The results of the usability test of KOHA OPAC at TU-KL showed that users were slow at accomplishing search tasks, they took long duration to access TU-KL website that hosts KOHA OPAC and there was inefficiency in accessing library materials. This study concluded that usability challenges may have an impact on users' overall satisfaction with KOHA OPAC and information retrieval effectiveness. In order to enhance user experience and boost the effectiveness of information retrieval, the study recommends improvement of KOHA OPAC usability by revamping its interface and enhancing its features.

Assessment of Soil Erosion Hazards in Kambiti Subcatchment, Murang’a County, Kenya
Pub Date : 2023-02-10 DOI: 10.35942/ijcab.v7i1.301

Erosion is a global problem that destroys soil and adversely affects ecosystem productivity. Soil erosion generally involves many processes but the major activities involve particles being transported and deposited to another location. With an increasing population, soil erosion, water availability, energy production, and biodiversity loss are some of the most pressing environmental problems around the world. Erosion is a hazard associated with agriculture in tropical and semi-arid areas. Kambiti sub catchment is part of the upper Tana catchment. The upper Tana catchment includes 25% of Kenya gazette forest. A large area of land has been degraded, resulting in a drastic reduction in surface water availability during the dry season and poor-quality water during the wet season caused by high silt levels. The main objective of the study is to assess erosion hazards using RUSLE model in Kambiti sub catchment area, Murang’a County. The specific objectives of the study were to determine the effect of rainfall erosivity and soil erodibility factor in Kambiti Sub catchment area in Murang’a County, to determine  effect of slope factor to soil loss in Kambiti Sub-catchment area in Murang’a County, to determine the effect of crop protection and management factor in Kambiti Sub catchment area in Murang’a County to soil loss and to determine the strategies for management of soil and water in Kambiti Sub catchment area in Murang’a County. Data was collected from the catchment and analyzed using arc Geographical Information System to obtain the specific parameters in the revised universal soil loss equation model. Interpolation method was used to determine the mean annual precipitation. The k factor is a function of soil texture. Shape file for geological structure for Kenya was obtained from Kenya Agriculture and livestock Research Organisation and analyzed by use of arc GIS to obtain soil erodibility factor. The slope factor was analyzed using digital elevation model from arc view. Digital elevation model was gotten from STRM download. The C factor was derived from Landsat imagery from sentinel of 30metres by 30 metres. It was further analysed by unsupervised classification from Arc GIS. The sentinel clip of Kambiti sub-catchment was joined with ground trothing observations. The results were useful in estimation of soil loss therefore profiling the areas prone to soil loss. Study findings indicated rain drop impact and runoff were primarily responsible for causing erosion in Kambiti sub catchment. Anthropogenic factors played an important role in amplifying the severity of the damage, such as persistent vegetative degradation and destruction of soil structure due to organic matter depletion and routine shallow tillage. In recent years, erosion control has been hampered by the occurrence of gaps in knowledge regarding the integrated nature of erosion processes, leading to land damage caused by rill and inter-rill erosion going unaddressed. Poor people and thos

The study sought out to determine the influence of knowledge and skills among residents in integrated water management influenced on the wellbeing of Soweto East residents in Kibra, Nairobi County. Apart from intense overcrowding, lack of proper and adequate infrastructure, housing and poor sanitation worsened by open sewages and lack of drainage systems have characterized Kibra slums for years. In addition, a series of factors including very low incomes, irregular employment, lack of secure land tenure or collateral, and lack of property and informational records prevent Kibra households from accessing loans to finance construction projects, housing improvements or home purchases. To address these problems, Government of Kenya (GoK) and UN-Habitat instituted Kibra Integrated Water, Sanitation and Waste Management Project (WATSAN) in Soweto East to support small-scale community-based initiatives in water, sanitation and waste management as an entry point, while also aiming at improving the livelihoods of people living in Soweto East. Study sought to examine the extent to which the Project has been successful in enhancing well-being of Soweto East residents. The study employed descriptive survey research design since it’s most suited when conducting research study to a large population. The sample frame for this study comprised of 980 households from 6400 beneficiaries from Soweto East. The study sample size was 90 respondents distributed randomly among beneficiaries’ households. Data collection was done using questionnaires and was thereafter analyzed quantitatively using SPSS version 20 as a tool and presented in form of frequencies, pie-charts, tables, and graphs. The study found out that knowledge and skills had a positive effect on the wellbeing of Soweto East residents in Kibra, Nairobi County. The study thus concludes that having proper knowledge and skills of water and waste management will translate to improved wellbeing of the slum dwellers. This is because, improvement of all aspects of the environment including sanitation and hygiene requires that the community has proper education and awareness, and these cannot be reached without the proper co-operation from the slum dwellers. The study recommends the need to facilitate stakeholder interaction by encouraging community-based institutions such as women groups, youth groups, Community Development Associations, traditional councils, Water and Sanitation Committees (WASHCOMs) and other identified interest groups. There is also need to educate the residents to enhance awareness on the effects of poor waste and sanitation practices and benefits of KWATSAN. The study further recommends successful enforcement procedures to safeguard efficient waste gathering and dumping.

The declaration of the constitution 2010 was proposed to change the predominant socio-political plan in Kenya. The constitution expects to achieve fiscal changes by evenhanded dispersion of assets to advance improvement strategies and administrations that are customized to local needs. Different laws and strategies, for example, the Public Finance Management Act of 2012 and the County Government Act of 2012 means to ensure, advance and authorize the execution of these standards in the 47 counties Regardless of all these changes, fiscal transfer has been facing challenging issues in the devolution cycle in Kenya, creating broad discussions among different partners especially between the devolved units and national government. This study aimed at exploring the effects of fiscal transfers on intergovernmental relations in Wajir County, with the aim of providing sustainable recommendations on the research topic at hand. The study objectives were to assess the impacts of the amount allocated, timely disbursement, procedure of and national government fiscal control measures on intergovernmental relations in Kenya. This study depends on the theory of fiscal decentralization by that analyzes the channels through which fiscal decentralization influences intergovernmental relations and the fiscal control theory. The survey utilized descriptive research design and target targeted region government officials and chosen officials from Wajir County and the staff of Wajir County. The primary data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires and analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Quantitative data was analyzed using clear measurements which incorporated; rates, frequencies, mean and standard deviation. For qualitative data, it got analyzed using thematic analysis. The study found out that resource allocated, timely disbursement of resources and procedure of allocation of resources significantly affected fiscal transfers on intergovernmental relations in Wajir County. On the other hand, national government fiscal control measures had an insignificant effect on the intergovernmental relations in Wajir County. The study recommends that county governments and the national government should look for ways of ensuring adherence to policies and also come up with mechanisms of developing new policies regularly, Resource allocation to various activities should be enhanced and that the health departments should allocate significant amounts to non- recurrent expenditure, amount of resources should be improved through regular trainings and Governance structures should be established with a clear chain of command and they should incorporate all the stakeholders involved.

Policy implementation is paramount as far as service delivery is concerned. Proper policy implementation ensures improved service delivery within any sector, be it private or public. In addition, the implementation process determines the extent to which the policy enhances service delivery. Thus, the main objective of this study was to establish the implications of public policy implementation on service delivery in the county government of Kilifi, Kenya. Two theories guided the study; they include the theory of citizen involvement and the goal-setting theory. This study used a correlational research design. The target population was all county departments, which included water, environment, and natural resources; trade, tourism, and cooperative development; culture, gender, youth sports, and social services; finance and economic planning; health services department; lands and physical planning; and the department of Agriculture within Kilifi County headquarters. The respondents were workers from these departments, members of the county assembly, and members of the general public, totaling 156. Also, there were four key informants. This made a total of 160 respondents. The researcher adopted the Taro Yamane formula (1967) to calculate the sample size, which was 112 respondents. The data collection tools used were the questionnaire and key informant interview (KII). The questionnaire contained both close-ended and open-ended questions. The study employed content validity to ascertain the validity of the instrument using expert opinion and the input of the supervisor. A pilot test was conducted to ascertain the competency and reliability of the instrument where a Cronch bar alpha was calculated at a threshold of 0.7. This study employed descriptive and inferential statistics for quantitative data analysis. Furthermore, regression and correlation analysis were done on the data collected to establish the relationship between variables. The results revealed the existence of a weak but significant positive correlation between stakeholder engagement and service delivery (r =.513, pvalue =.002). A moderate but significant positive relationship existed between public participation and service delivery (r =.565, pvalue =.006). A strong, significant, and positive association between the implementation framework and service delivery (r =.637, pvalue =.000) and lastly, a weak but significant positive relationship between the policy evaluation plan and service delivery (r =.475, pvalue =.005) in the county Thus, the results revealed that stakeholder engagement, public participation, implementation framework, and policy evaluation plan positively and significantly enhance service delivery. The study recommends the development of a better public policy implementation process, which is a significant predictor of county performance and hence better service delivery. The study did not, however, consider the moderating and mediating influences. So, studies can be do
513, pvalue =.002)。 565, pvalue =.006)。
{"title":"Implication of Public Policy Implementation Process on Service Delivery in the County Government of Kilifi, Kenya","authors":"Damaris Redson Safari, Daniel Mange Mbirithi","doi":"10.35942/ijcab.v6i3.284","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.35942/ijcab.v6i3.284","url":null,"abstract":"Policy implementation is paramount as far as service delivery is concerned.
