With vast benefits across various market segments, active RFID tags have shown great potential in the healthcare sector. Battery replacement remains a deterrent towards mass implementation of active RFID tag technology. Within this context, rectenna architecture has been investigated as the RF power transfer mechanism for ultra low power on-body communication. A working prototype consisting of 7-stage Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier integrated with band pass filter and lowpass filter has successfully been developed on 1.57 mm RT/Duroid 5880 laminate with the goal of prolonging battery lifespan. A qualitative assessment is proposed as means of evaluating rectenna performance with various antenna designs connected to optimized rectifier. Under non-controlled environment, powering an LED from a Wireless Access Point transmitter source can be used to gauge robustness of rectenna system. Antenna with 5 dBi gain was capable of powering LED at 10 cm distance from RF source.

The aim of this paper is to present the model of double star induction machine using the concept of vector space decomposition, while taking into account the mutual leakage between two stars. This powerful concept allows to analyze the impact of circulating harmonic currents on the double star induction machine performance when supplied by voltage source inverter. The simulation and experimental results confirm the validity and the performance of the studied model.

In this paper, we present an application of a Takagi Sugeno (TS) Fuzzy logic backstepping control for enhancing performance of the machine drive. The equations states of induction machine are described in a d-q frame related to the rotating stator field. In the first step, the state feedback linearization technique is used for decoupling speed and flux controls. In the second step, we have been developed a control scheme basis of fuzzy backstepping. The simulation results in MATLAB environment show that the proposed scheme gives a satisfactory performance.

Solving the Unit Commitment problem (UCP) optimizes the combination of production units operations and determines the appropriate operational scheduling of each production units to satisfy the expected consumption which varies from one day to one month. Besides, each production unit is conducted to constraints that render this problem complex, combinatorial and nonlinear. In this paper, we proposed a new strategy based on the combination of the Particle Swarm Optimization method and the genetic algorithm applied to an IEEE electrical network 14 buses containing 5 production units to solve the Unit Commitment problem in one side and to find an optimized combination scheduling in the other side leading to minimize the total production cost.

Face recognition is one of the most important tasks in computer vision and biometrics where many algorithms have been developed. The Local Binary Pattern (LBP) has been proved to be effective for facial image representation and analysis, but it is too local to be robust. In this paper, we present an improved method for face recognition named Elongated Multi-Block Local Ternary Pattern (EMBLTP), which is based on Local Binary Pattern (LBP).The proposed method is tested on Yale face database and compared with different variants of LBP. Experimental results show that, the classification rate of the proposed method is appreciable.

A fuzzy adaptive tracking controller for a class of SISO uncertain nonlinear dynamical systems is proposed and analyzed. The controller consists of an adaptive and robustifying component whose role is to overcome the effect of uncertainties, disturbance and achieve a desired tracking performance. It is shown that the proposed controller guarantees superior performance compared to similar controllers in the literature. The stability of the closed loop is proved using Lyapunov theory in the sense that all signals involved are bounded. Finally, simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

This paper describes two measurement techniques of the air gap flux density in a small permanent magnet synchronous machine. The first method is based of the harmonic analysis of the induced voltage in a search coil placed on the inner periphery of the stator, while the second relies on the analysis of the induced voltage in the stator windings. Accurate results can be achieved since the measurement procedure relies only on well defined electrical quantities regardless of the dimensions of the machine. A further appreciation of the accuracy of the proposed measurement procedures can be confirmed by the reconstruction of the stator induced voltages. Although each method has its own merit in terms of field sensing, they are basically identical; nonetheless they enable a cross comparison of the measured results.

In this paper, we focus on maximizing network lifetime of a Wireless Sensors Network (WSN) using mobile base station. This work is based on the modified LEACH protocol to develop our algorithm which supports node mobility and improves network lifetime. We consider a heterogeneous WSN which consists of a large number of sensor nodes, a few static cluster heads (CH) and a mobile Base Station (BS). Each sensor node periodically sends sensed event packets to its nearest CH. The CH should found an itinerary to send these event packets to the mobile BS. To show that the proposed approach achieves the required reliability and also maximize the network lifetime, we compare this protocol with an algorithm dedicated to a network formed by fixed nodes only. Simulation results show that the proposed mobile multi-hop algorithm, based on adaptive clustering protocol, effectively produces optimal energy consumption for the wireless sensors network and improves the network lifetime compared to other approaches.

Control valves are important components in control systems, which play a crucial role in ensuring plants run efficiently. The effect of valve failure is not only major production loss but also high maintenance cost. In a plant, a common technique used for valve maintenance is based on the valve condition replacement at fixed time interval. Most of the time the replacement only happens after the valve has obvious failure and during the plant shutdown. Common case of failure in valves is the internal valve seat leakage. The valve leak tightness test is conducted to detect the occurrence of internal leak in valve, however it is costly and time consuming to isolate the valve from the site and dismantling the valve. Significant money can be saved if leak in the valve can be detected early and if the test can be conducted online without having to isolate the equipment from the site. Therefore, this paper aims to study the effectiveness of Acoustic Emission technique in detecting early leakage in control valve on-site with fully closed position. The paper discusses a method based on different types of statistical analysis parameters such as variance, standard deviation, max amplitude on frequency domain analysis of AE signals to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy control valves. A real time AE measurement system is developed and tested. The acquired AE signatures are processed and analyzed using MATLAB.

Modulator is one of the most significant building-blocks of analog Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) used for Sigma-Delta Analog to Digital Converter (ADC). For high-performance analog circuit applications area and power consumption are the most important parameters to determine the performance of the modulator. Our design consumes only 1.16 mW of power at a supply voltage of 3V. Eventually the core chip size of the modulator without bonding pads is 76 μm × 110 μm by using the AMS 0.35 μm CMOS technology.
