We experimentally demonstrate a novel wavelength division multiplexed OFDM-PON architecture DPSK video overlaid. The 10-Gb/s 16QAM-OFDM P2P signal, 2.5-Gb/s DPSK video signal and 2.5-Gb/s OOK upstream signal have been transmitted over 20km fiber successfully.

We develop 40Gbit/s interface conversion prototype circuits for 40GbE, STM-256/OC-768 and OTU3 tri-rate serial signal transport with 65nm CMOS technology. A conversion function between the SFI-5.1 and the SFI-5.2/XLAUI is demonstrated for the first time. The 16∶4 MUX and 4∶16 DEMUX prototype chips consume 1.6 and 1.7 W, respectively.

Wavelength Switching and multi-wavelength picosecond pulses are generated from a self-seeded Fabry-Perot laser diode and a tilted multimode fiber Bragg grating. 9 discrete wavelengths are obtained by changing the modal distribution in the grating. The sidemode suppression ratio is better than 25dB and pulsewidth is no more than 42ps.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a reconfigurable all-optical VPN scheme enabling intercommunications among different ONUs in a WDM PON. Reconfiguration is realized by dynamically setting wavelength conversion of optical VPN signal using a SOA in the OLT.

An innovative temperature-insensitive metal package for FBG was designed to compensate the effect of temperature. The wavelength shift of FBG was tested with the new package and without the package, respectively. In the range of −20°C∼100°C, the temperature sensitivity of the FBG was 1.7 pm/°C with the new package and 10.7 pm/°C without the new package. It shows that the new package for FBG can eliminate the wavelength shift with the temperature change. So it is suitable to use the FBG with the new package as an optical filter.

We evaluate switch scales for several single-layer and hierarchical optical cross-connects. With introducing practical waveband add/drop ratio bounds that can be derived through recently developed network design algorithms, switch scale is shown to be significantly reduced. We identify the most cost-effective switch architectures by applying practical parameter values.

The three-wave conversions ( such as the nonlinear generation of light pulses of second harmonic frequency and parametric amplification of light signals), photo-induced in all-optically polled glasses materials, have been investigated. Theoretical considerations of the investigated phenomena show the interesting peculiarities of the process of three-wave conversions in photo-integrated volumetric micro-structures of nonlinear polarizability with the existence of a regime of synchronous two-beam transformations of light pulses. During the experimental investigation of the phenomena in the bulk oxide glasses the complicated kinetics of the formation of second-order polarizability gratings has been detected. Some properties of the phenomena have been studied and the possible mechanisms of the dynamics of processes are discussed.

Polarization-multiplexed LDPC-coded QAM robust to I-Q imbalance and polarization offset is proposed. Efficient mitigation of I-Q imbalance and polarization offset is demonstrated with LDPC-coded turbo equalization by simultaneous MAP detection of symbols transmitted over two orthogonal polarizations. The proposed scheme is much more efficient in I-Q imbalance and polarization offset compensation than conventional approaches.
