In Derek Walcott’s “The Castaway,” the ambiguous images and isolated castaway evoke the sordid colonial memory and its aftermath of the Caribbean cultural predicament, while, in poetic creation, they also elicit a sense of creative vitality. The interreaction between the negative content and the positive effect is activated, intriguingly, right by those images—sandflies, feces, entrails, decaying objects, etc., whose meanings are often degraded since their disvalued representations in the tangible world. Francesco Orlando once discusses functionally repressed physical things, basically capitalistic-evaluate, as “obsolete objects”, and proposes that these objects can achieve an anti-functional return in literature. This suggests the disvalued images can be excited artistically by their ambivalences. Based on Orlando’s discussion, this paper focuses on the ambiguous images, proposing that these “obsolete objects” subvert the pervasive negation, through their multiple connotations and the intertextuality in Walcott’s works. Besides the postcolonial echo of self-help communicated by the poet’s appropriation of Robinson Crusoe, it is these images replace the predicament presented in the poem with the artistic newness of natural self-sufficiency. This also raises a reflection on utilitarian and anthropocentric ideas of the highly commodified and functional today.

The Report of the 20th National Congress is a programmatic document that gathers the wisdom of the whole Party and the country, reflects the will of the people, has a significant guiding role in the development of the Party and the country, and has a positive impact on the international community. President Xi Jinping has led the whole process of drafting the report, which gave the text some of his personal language style. In order to introduce to the international community the CPC Central Committee’s thoughts on governance, the historic achievements of the new era in the past decade, and the great blueprint for the new journey to the international community, the translation should be able to comprehensively and accurately reflect the original intention of the report, maintain consistency in ideological content and language style with the original text, and be understood and accepted by the international community.

This paper aims to provide valuable insights for future translators dealing with the English-to-Chinese translation of non-fiction literature, employing principles from Eco-Translatology. The research focuses on the translation of Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper, utilizing the framework of Translation as Adaptation and Selection. By evaluating the degree of multi-dimensional transformations, reader’s feedback, and translator quality in the existing Chinese version, the paper assesses eco-balance within the translated work, considering the hybrid nature of non-fiction literature and its linguistic, cultural, and communicative aspects. Based on the analysis, the paper suggests that translators should strive for comprehensive dimensional transformations, with emphasis on the communicative dimension, while considering other dimensions based on the content type (informative, literary, or hybrid). Additionally, constant attention to the target readership is essential throughout the translation process. These findings contribute to enhancing the quality of English-to-Chinese translations of non-fiction literature.

With the deepening communication between the East and the West. Taoism, a domestic religion in China, has also been introduced into the Western world. In particular the masterpiece of Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching, has affected numerous readers. There is a huge gap between Western binary opposition and the Eastern philosophy contained in Taoism. Caused by such a mentality, the misunderstanding of American literature on Tao Te Ching and Taoism is ubiquitous. This paper mainly analyzes the introduction and translation of Tao Te Ching in America, the misinterpretation and acceptance of the theory of Lao Tzu and the influence of Taoism on American writers, poets and Chinese-born American writers. Taoism has been greatly promoted and accepted in America with the help of these scholars and works.

Run Away, the collection of eight short stories written by Nobel laureate Alice Munro examines the lives of Canadian women throughout the last century. As a female writer’s novels, it inevitably flashes valuable female consciousness. From the perspective of androgyny, this thesis will explore the gender awareness in Li Wenjun’s Chinese version on the lexical level by investigating corpus data and analyzing specific cases. This study holds that male translators with androgynous perspectives could cross the gender border and translate from other gender’s perspective to make feminine elements visible.

The first person pronoun plays an important role in identity construction, however, there is few study on it from the perspective of evidentiality. This paper took the first person pronouns as evidentials, and conducted a comparable analysis on the frequency of them and the identities they constructed in academic papers between soft and hard sciences, aiming to find the differences between different discourse communities and explore their preferences for academic identity construction. The results showed that both fields prefer to use plural and subjective cases of first person pronouns, and they both prefer to construct the authorial identity of “researcher”, but scarcely construct the authorial identity of “responsible person”. Researchers in hard science use less evidentials than researchers in soft science, and they prefer to use evidentials “we” and “statement”, which weaken the authorial identity. Evidentials that embody authorial identity, including singular first person pronouns and “participation” evidentials, account for higher proportion in soft science than those in hard science.

The way we learn is affected by our personality. Regarding the significant role of different personality types in language learning in general and mastering L2 grammar in particular, the present study investigated the impact of extrovert/introvert personality types of Iranian EFL learners in grammar learning. It was hypothesized that in an EFL situation, extroverted students would attain a higher proficiency in English. An additional aim was to find out whether there is a significant effect of gender differences’ extroversion/ introversion on their grammar ability. Therefore, 220 high school students took a standardized English test, completed a personality questionnaire and provided information on a bio data form. The collected data were analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Distribution was conducted for evaluating extraverts and introverts’ grammar with respect to their gender differences. The main finding was extroversion vs. introversion has no significant impact in grammar learning. Moreover, there was no significant effect of gender differences’ extraverts/introverts on their grammar proficiency. The results revealed that both extraverts and introverts have the capability to be proficient in English grammar.
我们学习的方式受到我们个性的影响。鉴于不同人格类型在语言学习特别是掌握第二语言语法方面的重要作用,本研究调查了伊朗英语学习者的外向/内向人格类型对语法学习的影响。假设在英语情境下,外向型学生的英语熟练程度更高。另一个目的是找出性别差异的外向/内向是否对他们的语法能力有显著影响。因此,220名高中生参加了标准化的英语测试,完成了性格问卷,并提供了一份个人资料表格。收集的数据采用SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences)分析。通过分布来评估外向者和内向者在语法方面的性别差异。主要发现是外向型和内向型对语法学习没有显著影响。此外,性别差异对外向型/内向型学生的语法熟练程度没有显著影响。结果显示,外向者和内向者都有精通英语语法的能力。

ESL/EFL teaching exhibits a strong compatibility with moral and political education, and its classroom is a natural place for instruction. Teachers assume pivotal roles as leaders, designers, and practitioners, wielding considerable influence over the quality of foreign language teaching through their capacity to impart moral values and cultivate ethical awareness. It is imperative to incorporate moral values into teacher education to equip teachers with the requisite skills to foster moral development in their students. However, the pre-service education in China has failed to address the issue, resulting in a lack of pertinent training. As a result, in-service teachers often encounter challenges when attempting to integrate moral and political education into their pedagogical practices, including a deficiency in relevant knowledge, inadequate skill sets, and inappropriate teaching methods. Consequently, a crucial necessity exists for comprehensive revisions to pre-service education programs, particularly to curriculum and course design, to meet the specific needs of ESL/EFL teachers.
