Risk-taking, when unregulated by good executive function, may predispose youth to potentially dangerous behaviors such as substance abuse, unsafe sex practices, and criminal activity. The computer-based Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) has been widely used to study risk-taking propensity and predict real-world risky behaviors. We administered the youth version BART-Y to 6,929 children between grades K-8 and hypothesize that executive function, a cognitive skillset for self-regulation controlled by the frontal lobe, improves risk tolerance. Our preliminary results show that BART Total Points increased across grades and also significantly improved (p < 0.001) over repeated trials, supporting our proposition that risk tolerance is strengthened in parallel with cognitive development.

Error Analysis on Harvesting Data over the Internet
S. Kapidakis
Harvesting tasks gather information to a central repository. We studied 880560 harvesting tasks from 3446 harvesting services in 354 harvesting rounds during a period of 15 months, of which 382705 failed and the remaining tasks occasionally returning fewer records. A significant part of the Open Archive Initiative harvesting services never worked or have ceased working while many other services fail occasionally. A harvesting task includes many stages of information exchange, and each one of them may fail - but with different consequences each time. We studied the reported warning messages, the number of records returned, and the required response time to discover relations among them. We found that about half of the harvesting tasks on each harvesting round fail, and the number of failing tasks is slowly increasing. We developed a method of analysis that can be used to reverse engineering such complex network systems and to categorize the reasons of failure into useful classes. Our results do not indicate a new approach to harvesting or conclude to a breakthrough advice, but make clear the complexity of the operation in an ever changing networking environment and alarm the reader that some facts that may be considered trivial, actually they are not! They help us to better understand the risks involved, and to design more reliable procedures and improved ways to closely monitor them.

Technology assisted home based rehabilitation therapy offers a potentially cost-effective and convenient solution for those affected by neuro and musculoskeletal impairments. Home based solutions, however, face many challenges, the most significant of which is trying to reproduce a complex adaptive therapy experience in the home without the continuous presence of the therapist. Building on our prior work creating interactive systems for the clinic, we present our home-based system that integrates customized therapy objects, camera based movement capture and assessment techniques, and a flexible exercise protocol aimed at generalizing to variable daily life activities. We present findings from two pilot studies with unimpaired and impaired users and describe how insights from these studies will guide future work.

Unfortunately, today people drive more and walk less. The use of vehicles has become the main way of traveling, even for short distances. This has a negative impact on many socioeconomic areas, some of which are related to the planning of cities, the health of people, the natural environment, and generally the quality of life. This paper presents a market research study investigating citizens' attitudes on the pedestrian network conditions as well as the potential for a smartphone application that provides users relevant information for effective route selection and connectivity to enhance and improve their walking experience. For this purpose, an on-site survey was carried out in two selected areas, one with low quality pedestrian network conditions and the other with high quality pedestrian network conditions. Based on the analysis of the collected data, we see that citizens are aware that walking is beneficial for their health and have a positive attitude towards walking. However, it seems that the adverse walking conditions negatively influence the actual decision to walk. Further, there seems to be a demand for a smartphone pedestrian network application that provides relevant information to citizens, but this is dependent on specific business models. This paper contributes to sustainable development and the idea of a smart city. The findings support further research to be carried out to develop and market such a system, which would be useful both for citizens and local governments in order to improve urban spaces, the natural environment and the quality of life.

A Novel Approach for Movement Evolution Tracking in Parkinson's Disease using Data Analysis and Fuzzy Logic
David Martín, Mirela C. Popa, J. Jiménez, Federico Álvarez, S. Asteriadis, L. Carrasco
In this paper, a novel approach for the analysis of the movement evolution in patients with Parkinson's disease is presented. The system offers the capabilities of detecting significant degradations in the motor-skills of the patients according to the physiotherapy evaluations, where seven items are measured, including: posture, balance, walking, postural changes, involuntary movements, movement coordination and rigidity. To assess their evolution, two modules are employed: a data analysis module, which uses a clustering algorithm to distribute patients according to their skills and analyses their evolution based on the last three evaluations, and a Decision Support Tool based on a Fuzzy-Logic system, which measures the state of the patient according to the results from the mentioned data analysis module and generates a report per patient including his/her state at each item as well as recommendations considering convenient exercises to be practiced. Thus, the system provides meaningful information to physiotherapists, to support them in the decision-making process.

This paper presents COIN-O-RAMA, an interactive exhibit designed for exploring and further engaging with coins in physical exhibitions. The key motivation was to create an appealing and user friendly system, augmenting and complementing the overall experience of visiting the exhibition, also offering the means for creating a personalized digital souvenir (a coin with the user's head engraved on it), working as a post-visit link to the exhibition and to related information, as well as an artifact to share with friends and the social media. In this paper the requirements and preferences upon which the creation of COIN-O-RAMA was based are presented, followed by an account of the conceptual and interaction / user interface design of the system. Subsequently, a technical description of the process followed to achieve the engraving effect used for creating the personalized digital coin is offered. Then, the results of an expert evaluation of a fully working prototype of the system are reported, comprising issues raised by the evaluators and the corresponding re-design of the system. The paper wraps up with some conclusions and pointers to future work.

A review of air quality sensing technologies and their potential interfaces with IoT for asthma management

In recent years significant advancement has been achieved on the domain of assessing air quality and monitoring the condition of asthma based on sensing technology. The pervasiveness of relevant devices could have a powerful impact on enabling patients self-monitoring and increasing public awareness on the air they breathe. In this study, we investigated a variety of different sensors devices relevant to the monitoring of air quality and different devices for assessing the condition of asthma. Our approach at this stage has been based on feature comparison based on product specification sheets and published case studies. We found that there is no standardisation among such devices and that in order for someone to deliver a holistic intervention for the management of a condition like asthma, a significant amount of proprietary effort to integrate third party data and technologies would be required. Such a solution would include both typical air quality sensing and asthma indicators monitoring, but also elements to seamlessly integrate sensed data and logic about the management of the condition.

Assessing TRL of HCI Technologies Supporting Shop Floor Workers
F. J. Lacueva-Pérez, Jayden Khakurel, P. Brandl, L. Hannola, M. Bandres, Marlene Schafler
Successful worker-centered Industry 4.0 solutions depend on the maturity of the technologies supporting workers' interaction with information systems. This paper discusses the methodology we followed while creating and updating the FACTS4WORKERS approach for monitoring available technologies together with an assessment of their readiness for being used on industrial shop floors. Our approach is based on the creation of a taxonomy of technologies to be considered and the assessment of their readiness following an adaptation of the technology readiness assessment methods defined by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) or European Space Agency (ESA). Further, the approach discussed can be cost-effective, productive, and easily adopted by any company, especially small and medium sized enterprises, which are considering starting an ICT project (with a substantial human computer interaction component). While our approach focuses on technology maturity, we believe that other aspects could also be evaluated to determine the readiness level of a technology to be used on the shop floor, including, for example, the expected benefits for the workers or remaining technology challenges.

This paper discusses the methodology we followed while creating and updating the FACTS4WORKERS approach for monitoring available technologies together with an assessment of their readiness for being used on industrial shop floors. Our approach is based on the creation of a taxonomy of technologies to be considered and the assessment of their readiness following an adaptation of the technology readiness assessment methods defined by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) or European Space Agency (ESA). Further, the approach discussed can be cost-effective, productive, and easily adopted by any company, especially small and medium sized enterprises, which are considering starting an ICT project (with a substantial human computer interaction component). While our approach focuses on technology maturity, we believe that other aspects could also be evaluated to determine the readiness level of a technology to be used on the shop floor, including, for example, the expected benefits for the workers or remaining technology challenges.","PeriodicalId":130190,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 11th PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments Conference","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122990599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our goal is to evaluate the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) in the recognition of automata images and to create a model that can be used in the construction of assistive tools. Visually impaired individuals that are studying Computer Science have difficulty in accessing and learning diagrams. Despite the solutions available in the literature to make diagrams accessible to blind students and allow the creation and manipulation of such material, we seek to give access to images of didactic materials and books. The method used consists of two steps: classification of the data using three types of CNN and the combination of the results to make a final decision. Two approaches were chosen to be tested: recognition of the type of automaton and recognition of the number of states of the automaton. Our best result was using late fusion of the three CNNs by the product rule, which resulted in an accuracy of 97% for the automaton type recognition and 91% for the recognition of the number of states of the automaton.
