The proliferation of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) devices and services and their integration in smart environments creates the need for a simple yet effective way of controlling and communicating with them. Towards that direction, the application of the Trigger -- Action model has attracted a lot of research with many systems and applications having been developed following that approach. This work introduces ParlAmI, a multimodal conversational interface aiming to give its users the ability to determine the behavior of AmI environments, by creating rules using natural language as well as a GUI. The paper describes ParlAmI, its requirements and functionality, and presents the findings of a user-based evaluation which was conducted.

In recent years significant advancement has been achieved on the domain of assessing air quality and monitoring the condition of asthma based on sensing technology. The pervasiveness of relevant devices could have a powerful impact on enabling patients self-monitoring and increasing public awareness on the air they breathe. In this study, we investigated a variety of different sensors devices relevant to the monitoring of air quality and different devices for assessing the condition of asthma. Our approach at this stage has been based on feature comparison based on product specification sheets and published case studies. We found that there is no standardisation among such devices and that in order for someone to deliver a holistic intervention for the management of a condition like asthma, a significant amount of proprietary effort to integrate third party data and technologies would be required. Such a solution would include both typical air quality sensing and asthma indicators monitoring, but also elements to seamlessly integrate sensed data and logic about the management of the condition.

Workers' health and safety is a major concern for the energy industry. Emerging and future technologies have the potential to deeply improve this field, and to make the workplace safer and healthier, especially if applied in concert. However, this transformation is difficult to envision by energy companies, which are tied to well-established rules, processes and solutions. This paper presents Augmented health and safety: Future Vision, a project we performed in collaboration with a worldwide energy company, to envision how emerging technologies may transform health and safety practices in the energy industry in the near future. The project aims at enabling dialogue and foster change by encouraging the development and adoption of solutions based on new technologies. By a design fiction approach, we designed and prototyped an ecosystem of physical and digital solutions for health and safety problems aimed at presenting future scenarios and triggering discussion about how to improve workplaces. Design fiction turned out to be an effective tool for enabling dialogue and inspiring change within companies.

Automata Classification with Convolutional Neural Networks for Use in Assistive Technologies for the Visually Impaired 基于卷积神经网络的自动机分类在视障辅助技术中的应用

Our goal is to evaluate the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) in the recognition of automata images and to create a model that can be used in the construction of assistive tools. Visually impaired individuals that are studying Computer Science have difficulty in accessing and learning diagrams. Despite the solutions available in the literature to make diagrams accessible to blind students and allow the creation and manipulation of such material, we seek to give access to images of didactic materials and books. The method used consists of two steps: classification of the data using three types of CNN and the combination of the results to make a final decision. Two approaches were chosen to be tested: recognition of the type of automaton and recognition of the number of states of the automaton. Our best result was using late fusion of the three CNNs by the product rule, which resulted in an accuracy of 97% for the automaton type recognition and 91% for the recognition of the number of states of the automaton.

Successful worker-centered Industry 4.0 solutions depend on the maturity of the technologies supporting workers' interaction with information systems. This paper discusses the methodology we followed while creating and updating the FACTS4WORKERS approach for monitoring available technologies together with an assessment of their readiness for being used on industrial shop floors. Our approach is based on the creation of a taxonomy of technologies to be considered and the assessment of their readiness following an adaptation of the technology readiness assessment methods defined by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) or European Space Agency (ESA). Further, the approach discussed can be cost-effective, productive, and easily adopted by any company, especially small and medium sized enterprises, which are considering starting an ICT project (with a substantial human computer interaction component). While our approach focuses on technology maturity, we believe that other aspects could also be evaluated to determine the readiness level of a technology to be used on the shop floor, including, for example, the expected benefits for the workers or remaining technology challenges.

FeelVR FeelVR

The interest in virtual and augmented reality increased rapidly in the last years. Recently, haptic interaction and its applications get into focus. In this paper, we suggest the exploration of virtual objects using off-the-shelf VR game controllers. These are held like a pen with both hands and were used to palpate and identify the virtual object. Our study largely coincides with comparable previous work and shows that a ready-to-use VR system can be basically used for haptic exploration. The results indicate that virtual objects are more effectively recognized with closed eyes than with open eyes. In both cases, objects with a bigger morphological difference were identified the most frequently. The limitations due to quality and quantity of tactile feedback should be tackled in future studies that utilize currently developed wearable haptic devices and haptic rendering involving all fingers or even both hands. Thus, objects could be identifiable more intuitively and haptic feedback devices for interacting with virtual objects will be further disseminated.

As the amount of readily available reading material increases, the ability to read selectively, or to skim-read, is becoming an important skill. In this paper, we report a comparative study of existing skim-reading strategies in sighted and visually impaired individuals. Using a think-aloud approach, we identified key features of visual documents that allow sighted users to adopt a highly flexible and goal-oriented approach to skim-reading. These features are mostly lost when documents are accessed in auditory form, as is commonly the case for visually impaired individuals. As a result, this group has to fall back on either less efficient or cognitively more demanding exploration strategies. From our results, we propose a list of six design implications to guide the development of future technologies assisting non-visual skimming.

Wearable technology has great potential in improving the work routines of medical professionals such as nurses and orderlies in the healthcare domain. Although wearable technology such as smartwatches can have a positive impact on the life of both patients and medical professionals, its usage is often not possible due to strict hygiene regulations. In this paper, we investigate the design space for a wearable device to support medical professionals in a hospital context that meets the requirements of the 'Bare Below the Elbows' hygiene policy. We conducted two workshops with eleven medical professionals to elicit requirements and to co-design such a wearable device. Specifically, we aimed to answer questions related to the form factor, mounting options as well as must-have functionalities and features.

Automatic classification of gait patterns using a smart rollator and the BOSS model 使用智能滚轮和BOSS模型的步态模式自动分类
Maribel Ojeda, Àtia Cortés, J. Béjar, U. Cortés
Nowadays, the risk of falling in older adults is a major concern due to the severe consequences it brings to socio-economic and public health systems. Some pathologies cause mobility problems in the aged population, leading them to fall and, thus, reduce their autonomy. Other implications of ageing involve having different gait patterns and walking speed. In this paper, a non-invasive framework is proposed to study gait in elder people using data collected by a smart rollator, the i-Walker. The analysis presented in this article uses a feature extraction method and a spectral embedding to represent the information and Bayesian clustering for the knowledge discovery. The algorithm considers raw data from the i-Walker sensors along with the calculated walking speed of each individual, which has been already used in clinical studies to assess physical and cognitive status of older adults. The results obtained demonstrate that the proposed analysis has the potential to separate in clusters the people of the two groups of interest: young people and geriatric.
