Packet switching is an effective technology for integrating voice and data in a single network. An example for such a kind of a network is Internet. New service is emerging, and it is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). An important aspect of packet-switched voice is the reconstruction of a continuous stream of speech from the set of packets that arrive at the destination DTE (data terminal equipment). Because of the statistical nature of packet switching, each packet can encounter a different amount of delay in traversing a packet network. The problem described in this paper is how to design an appropriate voice reconstruction strategy that reproduces acceptable-quality speech from packets that arrive with varying delay. The basic idea proposed is to measure a delay jitter between several points on the Internet. Our voice traffic generator, implemented on a workstation, sends packets that are 20 ms long. The receiver measures the inter-arrival time and keeps track of mixed sequences and lost packets. The measurement results are given in a form of average delay jitter. The receiver also keeps a record of all relevant packet information in a text file that is used as an input to a delay jitter predictor. A traffic prediction element predicts talk-spurt characteristics and directly influeuces playout delay. For the prediction element, we propose an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS).

A feedforward multilayer neural network has been used for the estimation of the four-hour-ahead electric load in a power plant in the island of Crete. An attempt was made to use few variables for the input vector, while keeping the accuracy to acceptable levels. To this effect a sensitivity analysis of the input parameters was performed. The parameters investigated were both environmental (weather condition, minimum and maximum temperature) and seasonal (Julian day, holiday classification). The architecture of the network was a multi-slab feedforward structure using backpropagation. This served as the selected platform for comparisons. The network was trained with data that were pruned in both size and content. The correlation coefficient between actual and predicted power load was 0.987 when all the parameters were used for the training of the network. The network has also been compared to a multiple linear regression analysis. The correlation coefficient for this technique was 0.983.

The purpose of this paper is to research the synchronization properties of a cell delineation (CD) process in ATM networks. We demonstrate the CD process probabilistic model as a sequence of discrete states. Cooperation of these states is specified by a semi-Markovian process. One of the basic components of this process, that defines possibility of false per-cell synchronization, is the HUNT state. To analyze the basic characteristics of the HUNT state; we create a Markov chain oriented model. This model takes into consideration the properties of the cell header error control (HEC) redundant cyclic code. Besides, we take into account two channel error models which are relevant to fiber-optic channels. The first model is the Bernoulli memoryless one. The second model corresponds to the two state simple Markov chain. We present a computer algorithm to evaluate analytically the probability of false synchronization. The numerical results are demonstrated and discussed.

The popularity of the Web makes the efficient access of distributed databases from Web clients an important topic. Various methods for Web database integration have been proposed but there is an increasing interest on those based on Java. This is due to the Inherent advantages of Java, which supports platform independence and secure program execution, and produces a small size of compiled code. In this experimental paper, we evaluate all currently available Java-based approaches. These include Java applets, Java Sockets, Servlets, remote method invocation, CORBA, and mobile agents. To this end, we implemented a Web client accessing a remote database using each of these approaches and compared their behavior along the following important parameters: (1) peformance expressed in terms of response time under different loads, (2) transparency of communication expressed in terms of complexity of networking API, and (3) extensibility expressed in terms of ease of adding new components.

In some applications, it is necessary to minimize the maximum amplitude error in the passband and to minimize the total stopband energy. In some cases, both total stopband energy and the maximum stopband gain should be considered. In this paper, a new approach for the design of low-pass linear phase FIR filters with the equiripple passband and the least-squares stopband is proposed. In this approach, the design problem is solved by means of its transformation into an equivalent bicriterion optimization problem. In order to do this, the filter coefficients vector Y is defined and two objective functions X1(Y) and X2(Y) are introduced. The conditions on the maximum permissible error in the passband or in the stopband can be optionally imposed as extra constraints. Two design examples demonstrating the usefulness of the proposed approach are given.

This paper describes a novel algorithm especially devoted to detect "interesting" objects defined as a set of close measured values that spring out from a uniform or textured background. In particular such an algorithm has been developed with the purpose to define a movement strategy for a remotely piloted rover useful in applied geophysics. The method could be represented by a Viper that moves with a random trial over the image with the purpose to detect the presence of an object emerging from the background, and to adapt the sampling interval to the shape of the detected object. Simulations on real geophysics images show good results with reduced algorithm complexity.

In this study, a programmable integrated circuit (PIC) microcontroller-based medical apparatus was constructed for dentistry. The function of the apparatus is to obtain high-quality tooth-filling materials. In dentistry, the tooth-filling material does not adhere correctly and often falls out after some period of time. The reason for this problem is that the mixing process of mercury and amalgam isn't done correctly. With the realized system, this mixing problem was solved and achieved successfully.

An important issue in future cellular communication systems is the design of the interconnecting network of their access segment and the best distribution of the systems' capacity in order to provide the predefined quality of service (QoS). In this context the following topic arises; to find the minimum-cost configuration of cell site switches (CSSs) given the base transceiver station (BTS) layout, that satisfy a set of performance constraints (that derive from the traffic and mobility patterns in the system). An extended version of the problem may also comprise the deployment of the above configuration in different load configurations. The problem is formally defined, optimally formulated, and solved by using a neural network technique. Finally, results are provided and subsequent conclusions are drawn.

This paper presents a new structure for a six-port reflectometer (SPR) which uses a symmetric five-port ring cascade-connected to a backward coupler. The performance of the ring-based SPR has been compared with that of a SPR which uses four 90/spl deg/ hybrids. Circuit design criteria, developed by means of the commercial computer code Advanced Design System (ADS), show that the ring configuration allows to obtain a higher cut-off frequency and lower attenuation coefficients.

Over the past several years, there has been an increase in the number of heterogeneous information sources, mainly due to the rise of the Internet. In order to select the desired information, large quantities of information must be searched and examined. Various AI techniques are available for such tasks, relying on information semantics. To implement these techniques on a variety of platforms, a common basis for the interchange of semantic information must be defined. The Resource Description Framework (RDF) is a model for the description of semantic information which is suitable for application on the Internet, and it is based on the semantic network model. It should, however, be noted that this model does not provide any means for querying RDF data. In this paper, we propose a model for querying RDF knowledge bases and its accompanying syntax based on XML. The model has been implemented and tested in practice.
